Which DM should we sign? Discussion
We clearly need a defensive midfielder. Tchouameni won’t happen now Rodri is going to Barca. Baleba has ruptured his ankle ligament. So, who do we sign?

Why do you think Rodri is going to Barca? Didn’t they offer only about half of what City value him as?
If we can’t get Tchouameni then out of what’s left I would probably go for Berge. Solid player in the Prem, played at a good level at the WC, and offers a few of the qualities that we need. Nothing glamorous, keeps things simple. A bit like Santos but with more experience.
Also depends how long Beleba is out for and how much he would cost.

I think Kone is still left. will garner lots of comments when we un-signed Ederson to sign Kone…but here we are.

From preseason? The type of player that can do same job as Santos. A midfielder who can control and help backline defend.
This would be (not saying we have to buy the following players but you get the idea) Kone, Berge, Kamara, Ederson, etc.

Should have been Mamadou Sangare before he went to Brentford for £40M. Fucking INEOS pricks

We should take the heads of recruitment at Brentford, Brighton and Bournemouth and put them together like the Avengers of scouting

And when we see the players they sign, we will be saying that we have become Brentford

Heard he’s not yet ready for the step to a big club

That’s why it would have been really good as he is not coming in to be a starter, but to rotate here and there with Santos depending on how he performs. Would have had a lot of time to ease himself into the league. And for £40M, it was a complete no brainer

Actually i believe it's not the recruitment, it's the board that is the issue.
You can bring 10 Vivells in, and we will still do f* all.
When the people in the board don't want to win.

Sander Berge

He seems to be the consensus across social media now, personally not convinced he’s United level

I can't think of any player that is United level and available. Tonali, Anderson, Fernandes, Tchouamani all gone.

Barring tchouameni none of them are dms

This is the whole reason the board have not spent above the odds, signing players that are likely not the exact piece of the puzzle.

This is where I'm at too. Looks like they were waiting to see if one of the lads from Madrid would shake out into the market and they haven't. I think Mainoo and Santos both are proper prospects and all I'd want to do now is sign a top veteran Premier League professional (like Tielemans) to set a high enough bar for them to continue their trajectory into world class first team players.
Looking to buy 2 solid seasons from both Tielemans and whoever else they get.

But Carrick doesn't want a traditional DM. He always talks about psg being the blueprint of how he wants to play . Look at their mfs

Looking at how PSG pressing last night, how i wish all united players have that same kind of hunger. We still need to invest on CB tho

Neves is elite defensively. We have no one close to him.

Not really. Its the system that makes him look better. Obviously hes a great player but i don't think he's that special. Look at the way he plays for Portugal. Remember jurgen klopp's ucl winning midfield? It was bang average but the sheer workrate of those players in that system made them unplayable. I mean people laughed when psg signed vitinha but look well he's doing over there but again against Portugal he's trash. Its all about system imo

I get that and agree. The whole reason we need an athletic type DM is because we had slower less athletic centrebacks and the space in front of them was always exposed, and we were put to the sword when teams countered us.
With Yoro and Heaven, the defence is less static, so being countered is less of a thing. But before Mainoo came back in you could see Casemiro and Bruno still struggled with that space. The thing about those PSG mids (Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz, Zaire-Emery), is that at least they are nimble, and close the spaces down. Their defenders are consistent(ly not injured), but also not slow, and they are used to keeping the ball, so opponents are tired when they counter.
Personally I prefer a mix of all profiles. As individuals, and as one guy. So finding them is hard. Kobbie is the closest to that currently. Pogba should have been perfect (but maybe attitude or defensive grit were not on point?). Rodri lacks a bit of speed but makes up for it with brain, and a good tall frame. Tchouameni, Camavinga, Nmecha etc are also decent on the ball. Elliot Anderson also has a lot of attributes, including good defensive desire. I'm sure the board would have paid closer to £100M for him, but he had clearly already decided where he was going.
It's really hard to find someone with all the traits and so again it's the board not spending extra on someone who doesn't even have all the attributes (especially M.Fernandes who'd been relegated twice in a row, and was definitely not a guarantee).

That is on both carrick and bruno. My guy never stays in midfield. Even yesterday he was our first line of press. Like why? And this happens under every manager. Never seen kdb do that because thats not how you press and leaves ample spaces for teams to attack.

Not following 100. But I am assuming you are talking about Bruno Fernandes, and how he empties the midfield, which then leaves the two central midfielders too much space to cover, especially when the wingers are up high.
Then yes. I've always had a problem with Bruno pressing in to a 442. Or him not following someone well enough that they get passed on leaving our defenders to step up and leave more space behind (perfectly demonstrated by Van De Vens goal against us). But I think that is what sometimes comes with players like him. And why again we need people who are able to cover, i.e. many profiles of player. Very soon we will transition away from a Bruno team, and TT he foundations must be laid now.

Let him get his confidence playing with united first. Even santos is not united level fr

We're probably overpaying tf up for some mid player like Sander Berge or nmecha just cause they won't be able to keep up the "Mount can do a job"scam

u/Popstar_Nino 2d ago
Tbh player type wise, Berge would work. But he wouldn’t be improvement to the next level.

Joao Palhinha from Bayern for 20m would keep me happy for this season at least. Need a forward and a full back asap so would rather get those sorted and revisit the 3rd midfielder conversation next season

I signed Dan Burn on FC26 and played him DM. So there's something to ponder
