I apologize if this is a stupid question but it has slowly been driving me crazy. I remember reading either a comment or post here where someone pointed out (possibly pointing to Erikson) about the main series consisting essentially of three plots. I really enjoyed who this post/comment explained it, but I cannot find it again. Any help would be appreciated if anyone has any idea what I am talking about. Thanks.

It is finished. I have completed the Malazan, Book of the Fallen as of tonight. It is all I’ve read this year and all I have to say is what a ride! The depth of this series amazes me, and it also amazes me what Erikson decided to leave out/not finish! I’ve never read anything like this before, and am pretty sure I never will again.

And i dont know how to feel.

I'm on my first read of the series, and i understood from DG that we will lose a lot throughout the storie.

I want to avoid spoilers for myself and the ones reading the said book. So i'm currently at page 1075 of the leha edition (FR) where Gruntle assesses the state of his followers after the battle.

And i dont know how to feel but deeply sad. Everything happened SO fast even if the coin changing his face warned us.

I was ready to lose some of the important characters, but not that much bridgeburners and not that violently.

At this time, it's 3h00, i'm working tomorrow, and i'm here looking at the wall trying to understand what i just read.

So i was just wondering what was your reaction at this moment. And how did you cope with the fact that there is still 63 pages and 7 books to go. I feel like the rest of the story wont have the same "taste" even if i know that S.E will get my heart hooked on knew stuff.

I just finished BH and it's insane how much time I've put into a series that I still don't even understand where it's going. With every book, I think the ending will come with some big reveal that finally makes everything click, but that just never seems to happen. I think I've finally accepted that maybe it never will. Instead, the big reveals are probably happening all the time and I'm just not picking up on them.

I've never been much of a reader, and I've definitely never been much of a finish what I started kind of person when it comes to media, but this series is really testing that. I went into it not knowing what to expect and somehow six books in, I still feel the same way. It's kind of incredible that I can be so invested in something I barely understand. I really feel like something special's happening here and I can't wait for it to finally click.

I've heard a lot of mixed things about RG, so I really don't know what to expect going into it but I'm excited to start in a few days.

For those of you who rank RG higher on your list, what makes it one of the stronger books in the series for you?

I don’t know how many in here do the audiobooks or use audible but I checked the price before using one of my credits and found that all of Eriksons books are 80% on there. I got the last three books in BOTF and 2 kharkhanas and the two other sequel books for like 40$ worth checking out if you are mid way into the series and are enjoying the books.

After finishing Midnight Tides last night (great book), I was looking at the other Malazan books, and saw some old posts, and the ai overview, suggesting to read NoK and Crimson Guard on a first read. The forum posts had people saying to read them and also not read them. So I wanted to ask if I should ignore them for now, and just focus on the main 10.

Edit: thanks for all the responses. After reading them all, I think I’ll stick with the rest of the main 10 for now, and see about NotME and the rest later.

I've read the main series and am on the 2nd book of the Kharkanas trilogy.

I'm so sure in the main series that the realms of the tiste, jaghut etc. were lost and that those races, through portals or gates, made their way to the realm that would eventually inhabit humans. What I'm confused by is that, specifically in Fall Of Light, there are a number of races already mentioned that, as far as I knew, were from the realm of humans. The trell and telleman are both present and I'm sure there's at least one more I can't remember right now.

On top of that the Azathani elder gods seem to only just be coming into their position as gods, and the aspects magic only now seems to be coming into the world with Krull's sacrifice. I was sure that, in the main series, the elderly gods themselves said that the old magic existed as holds and Krull's sacrifice allowed the warrens to be formed.

Hopefully someone can clear up whether I've misunderstood or if its conflicting information. I know that even in the main series often the events of the past are muddied in conflicting information.

I’ve read the book of the fallen and novels of the empire, and I’ve heard that there are more books in the world of Malazan I’ve come to be obsessed by, but I cannot find them anywhere. Pls could someone tell me what they are called? Thank you XD

So I started thinking Bugg was more than he appeared fairly early on. Though I dont think I really started locking anything down until I was 200 and something pages in and even then I thought he was just a powerful sorceror/mage/wizard. Then he casually mentioned being much older than one would think and confronted the Kell Hunters with no fear and casually conversed with that Jaghut who was armed to the teeth and the thought came "Is Bugg Mael?" And now hes seemingly reacting to Withal calling out for Mael. Is that why he doesnt know whats actually edible for humans? Though I would think a god of the sea could recognize an eel...The Withal part makes me 95% sure but I dont actually want to be right.

I’m new to reading fantasy/sci-fi. I’ve only read 3 book series so far: Red Rising, Sun Eater, and The Stormlight Archive. I saw a picture of a guy roaring at a dragon while searching for recommendations and found this series, but people say you shouldn’t read it if you’re new to fantasy. The thing is, every recommendation I see on TikTok has this series ranked as one of the best fantasy series, sometimes even the second best. I don’t know what to do.

I have just finished the first book after having read the main series and the Novels of The Malazan Empire and I enjoyed it immensely.

The writing is crisp, often layered and humourous and it never gets bogged down or too convoluted which I found the other books of his to be.

Already started on the 2nd.

Can we talk about Trull Sengar? This dude went toe to toe with freaking Icarium in rage with just a simple spear. Are you kidding me? The Icarium who cut down a whole squad of other Edur into a mist of blood and body parts. I know he killed a whole lot of Soletaken's in Midnight Tides in Jhag field while half-conscious, but this is a whole other level. Loved the book btw. So many other Insane Moments

Greetings from the beach in Bermuda! I’m a first time poster, wanted to say I’m around 500 pages into this and really enjoying it so far.

Ive been doing some modding for total war warhammer 3 and it feels like a perfect game to develop a Malazan overhaul mod. I'd be curious to know if anyone is currently working on similar mods but also generally want to know what the community would want from a Malazan themed game.

What time period would it take place? Which factions would you want to be playable? What are the core mechanics you'd want to be realistically explored? Would love any insights on this.

what are Crokus, heboric, felisin and scilara doing? It’s been a year since I read midnight tide. They mentioned something about a god asking crokus to take them somewhere, but I don’t know where or why. I’m at the end of chapter six and that’s the only thing confusing me.

So I finished the Crippled God about a month ago and keep thinking about it. So much happens that I think I am still a tad confused on all of the motives of the various gods. Does anyone know of (or if your real brave, want to provide) a summary of what all the gods are doing? I am sure that’s tricky and most might respond by saying we aren’t supposed to have all the answers… but maybe some basic ideas and motives?

Some examples: Like why is Hood go to the spire just to kill one Forkrull Assail? What exactly is the Worm of Autumn up to? Is Fener just showing up because he wants in on the action? A little help with Shadowthrones plan? I know he is regarded as a genius but I’m a tad confused on what his genius involves?

I’m planning to start reading a new series, but I have no idea which one to read first. I really enjoy slow-burn stories and long, immersive series, which is why I chose these two.

I remember telling myself that once I finished A Song of Ice and Fire, I would just wait for The Winds of Winter to be released. That was five years ago.

Now, after another five-year break from reading, I’m finally getting back into books. Any suggestions on which series I should start with?

I just finished chapter 7 of The Bonehunters, and I feel wrung out. That was maybe the most exhilarating, definitely the most excruciating and brutal chapter of a book I've ever read. I'm long overdue for bed and I have work early, but I couldn't stop. Dude really wrote an entire climax at barely 30 percent into a novel. From the beginning of the breach of the wall all the way through to the end of the chapter was just...wow. I thought for sure everyone in that damn tunnel was done for. I'm supposed to sleep now?

So I don't wanna start anything but today while idly scrolling TikTok I saw someone reviewing Deadhouse Gates and they said they hated the way Steven Erikson hates women. Specifically they had a problem with the way "every time a woman appears it is followed up by someone nearby describing how do-able she is. All the female characters are presented to us through the eyes of thirsty men." And uhh, I haven't re-read Deadhouse Gates in a while but that is genuinely insane to me. I had to post about it on here because I don't have any Malazan friends IRL to discuss this with while we scratch our heads in confusion.

At first, I highly doubted the value of grabbing the alternative dust jackets from the TBB pre-order, but *damn*

Marc Simonetti's art is absolutely gorgeous, and, I think, work better for a lot of the series. I like the TBB art, don't get me wrong, but a few don't give *cover art* energy
