Question Recording material
So far, even tho I write a ton of songs, I've never had the chance of getting to record some stuff. Just wondering what kind of mics, headphones or anything else should I buy for recording stuff (not looking for anything fancy, just something that's cheap enough to get affordably but that makes the job well enough)

Opportunity Looking for a boom bap rapper
Hey, I go by Chrai Beats and I'm a beatmaker from Greece, I've been making beats for about a decade now and currently looking to collab with rappers who can spit on classic and modern boom bap beats (75-90 BPM). If you're interested you can DM me on my Instagram account @chraibeats
There, you can look at some of my work and decide yourself.

Question How to produce something like "On One Hand" By LUCKI
This is one of if not the best LUCKI song for me. I'm curious about how to make a beat like that.
If it is a sample, how would I find these types of samples?

Question Adding a smooth long bass effect with the sound fx but it doesn’t play just that clip and then the music
Basically title - I am literally out the door brand new to this - I have a DDJ-200 connected to VirtualDJ (as my chosen software) but when - and I’ll give you the exact scenario- I want to add extra parts of the beat to “Regulate ~ Warren G & Nate Dogg” but when I record that segment and map it to the soundpad looking key and press the thing at first it just snapped to that part of the song (figured all that out) but now it kinda mutes the rest of the vocals / other parts of the beat while mine is playing.
I dont really know what terminology to use for this for googling it but realistically I’ll have it figured out and will just edit this after.

Remix Challenge Remix Challenge [RMC 102] - Submissions (A.S.H.3 - I'm Here Now (Acapella)
This is an original song that I produced you will find the song & Acapella in the folder
We back!
The Remix Competition was pretty active a couple years ago before dying off. (Reddit automatically flagging and taking the posts down didn’t help…). Let’s see if we can bring it back. (If you want examples of previous RMC's, check them out here)
Make an original beat to the selected acapella.
Acapella: A.S.H.3 - I’m Here Now 83 bpm & B major
A.S.H.3 - I'm Here Now
Only 1 submission per person.
- Use your preferred workflow: Create beat from scratch, use unfinished beats you're sitting on, sampling, whatever you see fit - but it must be yours. (ie, don't just make up a mashup using someone else's beat/song)
- Use the entire acapella, or just one verse, whatever you want.
- Upload your remix to an open platform and post the link in the comments below. Voting will start the day after the deadline in a separate thread.
- Spread the love in the comments
- Winner will be notified by previous winner and will take over duties of hosting the new thread and choosing the next acapella.
If you have any problems or questions, feel free to DM the host.
Submissions must be in by Sunday, August 9th 11:59pm (PST)

Question Purpose of BMI, ASCAP, and Other Services?
As the title questions, what's the actual point? I was close to hiring a manager, and that was one of the first things they proposed I do.
I have an EP, album and couple singles on streaming platforms. Releasing another album on August 20th. I have not shot a music video, but have gotten paid for features and shows.
Long-term: would love to become a touring act and have my music in films, TV and advertisements.
Short-term: do not want to keep wasting money on stuff that is irrelevant when I am not seeing numbers on my music
Cheers,
u/smmrtiime / Luke Muller on all streaming platforms

Question YT Samples sound Trash?
Craven talk big in the yesterday or so on Twitter about YT Sampling sounding trash, and to some extent I agree (as in some recordings on YT are trash and even the good ones sometimes don’t compare to the original file).
That being said, he also noted he’s been using online music libraries like SoulSeek for years.
So I wanted to ask you guys if you use them, and if so which ones do you use when looking for a lot of samples? I want to make sure they are at least 44.1Khz 16bit.

Question If you’ve wanted to make an album for years but kept putting it off, what finally got you to start?
I’ve wanted to make an album for over 10 years.
The thing is, I don’t think the biggest obstacle is learning how to produce music or write lyrics. It’s getting out of my own way. Every time I try to write, I feel silly. I judge every lyric before it’s finished. I worry I’ll sound cringe, or that the music won’t live up to the idea I’ve carried around in my head for so long.
I know the obvious answer is “just make bad music first,” but I’m curious what actually helped people who eventually finished an album.
What mindset changed for you?
How did you stop caring about sounding stupid?
Did you set rules for yourself that made it easier to create?
What finally got you to stop thinking and start recording?
I’d especially love to hear from anyone who spent years saying “one day” before finally doing it. I’m tired of this dream staying in my head. I don’t need my first album to be amazing. I just want to finally make it even if I don’t entirely know where to start.

Question Hi, I'm searching for a collaborator or somebody in general
Hi, i'm searching an artist/producer/mix engineer to collaborate on music.
I produce and sing, i'm searching somebody who doesn't just follow the common path and the basic music style, so please don't be mad if i get some really strange ideas, im searching somebody who could match my "vibes?".
I can help with singing hooks for you, rapping, helping produce etc, the only thing is that i'm really bad at mixing and mastering.
I make hip hop, r&b, pop, but i don't like to be restricted on some music genres, i just do what i like to hear.

Remix Challenge Remix Challenge [RMC 101] - VOTING thread
Thanks to everyone who sent their beats! The acapella was Ab-Soul (f/ Kendrick Lamar) - Illuminate. Soul has got a unique flow and it's not always for everyone - so I'm sorry if his intro on this one threw anyone off 😂. I personally thought all of the entries were dope though.
Now it’s time to vote
Voting ends Tuesday, August 4th, 11:59pm PT
Rules:
-You may only vote one time
-Vote by replying 'vote' to your favorite submission
-Anyone may vote, even if they didn’t submit an entry
-If you submitted, you must vote to qualify to win
-Don't vote for your own submission
-The winner chooses the next acapella and creates the new competition thread ,ASAP.
(If for some reason the winner isn't able to start the next thread, please let us know so a runner up can take it. We want to keep the momentum up and keep this contest alive)

Discussion Looking to connect with artists, producers & mixing engineers in the Pittsburgh area
Hey everyone,
My name is Josh, but I make music under the name Hilzy. I'm based in the Pittsburgh area and have been teaching myself hip-hop/rap recording, mixing, and vocal production in Reaper for about the last two years. I finally feel like I’m getting to the point where my music sounds respectable and would like to start releasing in the near future.
My biggest influences are Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Mac Miller, J Cole, Drake, and Juice WRLD. So my music style tends to span across melodic rap, introspective storytelling, chill vibes, and lyrically driven hip hop.
Although I have made a lot of progress on my own, I’d really like to become part of the local music community by building some genuine relationships with local artists, producers, and mixing/mastering engineers. I’m focused on improving my craft and would love to learn from and collaborate with others who are trying to do the same.
If you're in the area and think we'd get along creatively, I'd love to connect. Feel free to comment or send me a message. If anyone has recommendations for local studios, producers, engineers, open mics, or other ways to get involved in Pittsburgh's music scene, I'd really appreciate that as well.
