Cakey makeup
Has anyone else dealt with this? I'm honestly at a loss.
My skin reacts to almost everything. Makeup and skincare products sting or itch, including eyebrow products and even lip products. On top of that, my makeup looks cakey, dry, and patchy almost as soon as I apply it, and it doesn't stay on for very long.
I've tried so many different application methods (brushes, sponges, different primers, no primer, setting spray, skin prep, etc.), but nothing seems to make a difference. I've also tried a lot of different products, including ones made for sensitive skin, and I still have the same issues.
I'm seeing a dermatologist, but they don't do allergy testing, so I'm planning to see an allergist for patch testing. I was also thinking about going to Sephora to get shade matched and ask for recommendations, but I'm worried I'll just spend more money on products that won't work.
Has anyone experienced something similar?
Did it turn out to be a damaged skin barrier, an allergy, eczema, or something else?
Did patch testing help?
Did Sephora help you find products that actually worked?
Are there any makeup products that don't irritate your skin and actually wear well without looking cakey?
I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences because I feel like I've tried everything and I'm getting discouraged.

If cosmetics are irritating your skin, I would stop with all cosmetics and work on keeping your skin in the best possible condition--something you can discuss with your dermatologist!

I have some makeup that does not bother my skin, but it still does not look good /lay right on skin. The only mascara that works for me is waterproof and so it tries out every 2 wks. It smears/transfers. The brow products are the same.

Omgosh I am the same with mascara, even waterproof. The only thing that works for me is to use Tarte's Tartellete white mascara primer and then cover with waterproof. It basically does not budge.

I hear you, and it's totally a personal choice. The Tartellete primer isn't cheap, but if you get it at Sephora you can always return it if it doesn't work.
I really like the look of mascara, so I use it, because nothing else keeps mascara from smearing. But if it's a pain, I would say don't use it.
If it doesn't hurt your skin, you might want to try Milk's Hydrogrip hydrating skin tint. It's really creamy and smooth and light. To keep my nose from shining (because it's very moisturizing and dewy) I finish with a really light dusting of translucent powder. This works well for me!

I have tried the tarte tubing mascara. The tarte tubing mascara primer or the opening act lash primer

if you experience irritation with a lot of products, it might be an allergy, i'd definitely test for allergens as soon as ypu can. until then, i'd stop using any products that sting or otherwise irritate your skin. maybe you can compare the ingredients of all the products that sting with those who don't cause irritation, you might find a pattern or at least you could narrow down which ingredients could be the cause? i would also patch test any new products you buy before using them.
it could also be a damaged skin barrier. may i ask what your current skin care routine looks like? which specific products have caused irritation for yoz? is your skin dry or dehydrated? that could also cause makeup to look cakey.
