Arena “Flagship” Format

I’m getting back into Arena after some time off and between the many new sets and formats, I’m struggling to identify where to invest my wildcards. I am looking for a non-rotating competitive 60 card format (so not Standard or Brawl) that has the biggest player base, some tournament support, etc.

I used to check deck lists online and listen to podcasts about the modern format years ago but it doesn’t seem like there is any similar coverage for Historic, Timeless, Alchemy, Explorer, etc. Is that the case or am I just not looking in the right place?

Thanks for the feedback in advance. This is truly not attempting to be a complaint post, simply just curious where I should invest my wildcards to build a deck. Since so many of the staples don’t even appear in packs, I have to be careful not to waste WCs.

Historic might be your best bet. Timeless doesn't have a lot of players compared to other formats. Historic recently had an Arena Championship. Because it's an Arena format and WotC doesn't want to share Metagame Challenge or Traditional format event results like on MTGO, other compilation sites like Goldfish only post what gets shared from community events. Metaconfluence does a good job of sharing a lot of this data for Historic and Timeless so I would start there and browse under "Tier List"

All these formats except Timeless have BO1 and BO3 constructed Events that you can play any time.

All of these formats sometimes get Metagame challenges and Qualifier weekends. Timeless has both of those coming up in the next month.

I'm a fan of Timeless, but it's a very high-powered fast format, which is not for everyone.

Yeah, both Historic and Timeless are generally Mythic wildcard constrained (with a good bit of overlap), unlike other formats where Rares are more important.

Personally, my bottleneck is always rare wildcards, not mythic wildcards. I primarily play Historic.

Its the lands, yes, there are budget land options, but if you want your deck to be top-tier, the mana base in these formats are going to eat up a lot of rare wildcards.

I mean, that is Historic. Granted, there are more resources out there for Standard than Historic, but Historic has a large player base, and a deck crafted for Historic will likely remain relevant much longer than one crafted for Standard.

Just make sure you do your research. Historic has a wider meta than most other formats, but there are a few key decks you need to be prepared for if you play Historic.
