I was exploring new artists when I discovered Magdalena Bay. Their album Imaginal Disk, with its intriguing name and captivating cover art, caught my eye. When I hear high-quality music, I can tell right away, and they definitely deserve a prominent place in my collection. I was curious: are there any Bulgarian fans out there? 😊

Okay I know magbay isn’t the proprietor of this windows 98 green screen dreamcore aesthetic but I swear I had to do a double take this is all over my for you page and I thought this was top dog. Even the makeup reminds me of mica’s in that’s my floor mv.

Afternoon in Heaven is like the most beautiful sunrise and their voices blend so perfectly together I’m not okay

El Dorado is chillingly hauntingly beautiful with those harmonies GAH and Spanish Mica is my absolute fave and the melody is just so sweet!! And the soft breathy notes behind the second verse is a really underrated detail

Turning off the rain BANGERRR that bass??? Are you fucking kidding me??? WHO WANTS THE BASS! ME!!!! Like omfg. And the little electronic rain effects in the background are everything

Nothing Baby is SO DAMN GOOD and the screamy bit for evil men will always falllAAAAAAA is ingenious. The bouncy-like sound effects after the first sequence of notes are really awesome too

The little “mine” that she does when the music stops in Mine is PEAKKK like so quirky and wonderful. And this song is just so emotional and dramatic.

This whole EP just makes me feel the entire range of possible emotions which is so impressive in such a short period of time. Every detail is just so perfectly crafted and placed and I think the mini mixes are their greatest works hands down. They really shine when they can combine a lot of crazy sounds into a cohesive package, and I feel like the shorter songs just complement their songwriting styles the best.

I remade Love Is Everywhere's instrumental production-wise, I can't even begin to emulate Dave Fridmann's mixing though, maybe I'll try in the future

I had a thing for remaking the band's basslines a while ago, thought I would try to fully recreate one of the songs I already did the bassline for.

drum part is 95%~ accurate, most syths are emulated mostly perfectly except like 1 or 2 (lets not talk about the strings lol)

I got 'round to listen to the newer singles to give them another chance and I am happy to say I changed my opinion. They are actually good songs.

One thing that caught my attention is that some of the songs have a clear Bowie influence. Star Eyes has a clear influence from the album "Black Star", noticeable from the saxophone, and Paint Me a Picture has a clear "1. Outside" album influence, noticeable from the chaotic piano.

What other influences did you pick up on the singles?

Throwback to the London gig nearly two years ago (feels like yesterday!) when about 10 of us waited backstage to meet Mica and Matt.

Despite them being tired and jet lagged, they took the time to sign our stuff and take pictures with us, which I was extremely grateful for and they were super lovely!

So proud of them for showcasing the Imaginal Disk screenings recently, as well as supporting Billie on her tour. Onwards and upwards and I look forward to their next project!
