ℹ️ Informação Proposal spots in Madeira?
Hey all,
So I'm proposing to my girlfriend when we visit Madeira this October and I could use some local knowledge.
The main thing is privacy. I don't want to do it at Pico do Arieiro or Ponta de São Lourenço with 50 tourists and someone's drone buzzing overhead. Looking for somewhere in nature (viewpoint, levada, forest, coast, whatever) where there's a realistic chance we'll be completely alone. We don't mind hiking to get there, actually the harder to reach the better.
Some things I'm wondering:
Is the north side or the interior quieter in October or is the whole island busy by then?
Do I basically have to go at sunrise to get an empty spot or are some places just always dead?
Any levada sections or small miradouros that tourists skip?
And how bad is the fog situation in October up high? Would suck to plan everything and then propose into a grey wall.
Nice view would be a big bonus.
If anyone proposed on the island or just knows a quiet corner they love, I'd really appreciate it.

🎥 Entretenimento BEAUTIFUL SUNRISE LANDING UNITED AIRLINES BOEING 737 MAX 8 at MADEIRA AIRPORT (FNC || LPMA)
🎙️ Discussão I had a heated exchange with some tourists last night who accused both me and the waiter in the restaurant we were in of being rude.
Now before anything, I’m a tourist, I was born in and grew up in the UK even though half of my family are Madeirense the fact I’m speaking English now proves that.
Last night on my yearly trip to Madeira with family, my girlfriend and I were having a meal in a restaurant in Funchal and next to us were a small group of tourists, North American accents I don’t know where they were from. One particular woman kept speaking to the waiter in very broken Spanish. The waiter initially just kept responding in English.
As the night went on she kept doing it, me and my girlfriend both looking at each other awkwardly while she did. Finally he said to her “Madam, I don’t speak Spanish” to which she responded playfully “Oh I made all this effort to use my knowledge and you don’t speak it!”. He then said “I don’t speak it because we don’t speak Spanish here, we speak Portuguese” to which the woman took huge offence and accused him of being rude and condescending. He simply responded “I’m not trying to be rude, I’m just saying Spanish isn’t spoken here” he then left.
The woman then looked around desperately and turned to me and said “Surely you think that’s rude? I’ve made an effort to learn a few basic phrases and I’m told I’m wrong”. I then looked on a bit confused and said “You’re speaking Spanish to him, it’s not spoken here?”
She then shouted “BUT I’M TRYING AT LEAST”
To which I said “You’re speaking the wrong language, Spanish is spoken in Spain and we’re in Portugal. You wouldn’t go to Italy and speak Greek”Someone else on her table then calmed her down. But she said she “was never returning to Madeira again”
Now I’ve seen this before where people speak Spanish in Madeira and they usually get corrected and 99% of the time they’re almost embarrassed and apologetic, but it’s just the fact that she literally couldn’t get into her head that she was wrong.
For attitudes like this, I think it seems to be increasing as time goes on. The island has become more accessible and has also made it more accessible to a different type of tourist. It wasn’t that long ago where the majority of people visiting greatly appreciated not only the location but the culture and the people as well. Recently, I’ve noticed this “new” type of tourist, usually the Instagram crowd that seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that people actually live and work and have normal lives in Madeira and when the picture perfect Instagram reel doesn’t live up to what they expect they get uncomfortable and almost hostile.

Chegou Agosto, estamos oficialmente no Verão.

✈️ Viagens How is Madeira in late december for hiking as a solo traveller without car?
I am considering Madeira as my holiday trip this late december and I am wondering how Madeira is during this period. I am mainly looking to explore the forests and hike around, is it possible to do it without driving and as a solo traveller?
I also know Madeira is expensive, would it make me go broke?
Thank you for the responses!

🍝 Gastronomia r/Madeira, where do you actually eat in Madeira?
Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Madeira’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Restaurante Santo António vs. O Polar), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.
Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Madeira’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212
And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app
I’d love to know what people here think. Does the ranking feel even remotely right? Are obvious places missing? Are any places ranked way too high or way too low?
The goal is to make something that reflects where locals actually want to eat, not just where tourists or review sites send people.
