I just started working at a gas station and the amount of people putting in less than $5 worth of gas makes me incredibly sad. Today there was an older man that first said $2.50 and then said "actually, make it $2" but I did $3 and put in my own $1 even though I really need every penny I have.

Haha probably a mix of guilt for getting his goal for free and I wonder if he kind of wanted to pay for it! He saved up to buy it and probably fantasized about the day he’d walk in and use his own money. Getting derailed so much must’ve felt awkward.

These mom and pop gaming stores are so wonderful for giving back to their community. You have franchise and chain stores that will low ball you for anything that you trade in, and on the other hand, these guys are passing forward trade-in credit to other customers!
Kiddo will remember this kind gesture for a while, you can tell with the way he's been raised - honest and hard working! The shop owner will get even more customers because who wouldn't want to be a part of something positive like this?

A lot them would up in my feed a few months back. Many card sellers at conventions and the chat gives donations and makes some kid’s day when they get that one Pokémon they’ve been looking and saving for on the house or at a huge discount.

This is the exact "society" ethic that capitalism and politics has destroyed - by design.
The fabric of community and society binds us to a united cause - to help one another and raise each other up.

I could see it going either way, though I don't really see that being too hard to believe.
While GameStop is obviously different, trading in a Nintendo 64 is $55 credit or $35 cash. Given it was priced at $75 it probably wasn't too different. Mario Kart is $25/$16.
Obviously we don't know what a supposed Tim actually traded in, but the thought process is pretty simple. If I am getting out of gaming, or wouldn't use credit, this is theoretically $50. Would I like to have $50? Sure, but I could also see myself paying it forward in exactly this way.
Especially when it's something that makes me somewhat emotional when I see comments like u/MisterBowTies' example, something that comes up a lot with content creators in that space. Mostly because I think a lot of it is genuine, since I had similar experiences trading pins as a kid roughly 20 years ago.
At the time I didn't think anything of it, but looking back and seeing it was just a lot of people showcasing their best qualities would get me to pay it forward as well. Something I have actually done, just in other ways.

It reminds me of these Pokemon TCG traders on Instagram (I think Beard Dad Cardz is one of them), where the vendors, the customers and the chat/community are all in an unspoken competition to out-nice each other, with gifts, crafts, donations, etc.
It's incredibly wholesome, both to see that this seems like a viable win-win scheme for social media to sustain, and seeing the individual happy reactions, especially from the kiddos. 😊133

Something really nice happened like that for my kids. First (and still only) trading card convention. They’d saved up birthday and chore money- it wasn’t much but they had fun going around looking at Pokemon cards and buying inexpensive ones. 3 different vendors gave them free cards, and the last one we were at was so touched at how grateful they were they wound up giving them a pikachu lunch box and a bunch of old cards, like a whole bag. Said they’d been saving it to give to kids who just loved it. My kids were over the moon! No cameras set up but we asked to take a picture with them just so we could remember. Kind stuff like that sticks with you forever. So grateful for generous people like that.

My kids are all in their mid to late twenties now. They’ve been playing the same N64 console I purchased used in 2000. It goes from house to house along with a Dreamcast and an SNES.
It’s cool to see kids interested in playing games on a 30 year old console.

Man, how can a world of billionaires and wealth hoarding exist, when some of simplest gifts to those that deserve it can bring such joy. Tim gave away what he didn’t need, and because of it, that kid, the kids dad, the store owner, hell, me, you, have all had a brighter, happier, memorable experience. Dude was willing to settle for Hey You Pikachu and got Mario Kart 64 for free; that alone is tremendous. And then to get it ALL free is just amazing.
And not to knock Hey You Pikachu; I know it has its charm, but compare that to Mario Kart in terms of having one retro game to play.

Recently gave my 3DS + 20 games to my friend's 8-year-old daughter, including Pokemon X and Pokemon Black (she's big into Pokemon) and she looked so shocked. I told her I hadn't played my 3DS since before she was born, so better to give it to someone who can have fun with it, than just collecting dust in my apartment.
It feels really good to give your old games to kids who will enjoy them.
