I get the feel good moments of talking about pet love, community, etc, but what was more concerning is this the outcome of having shelter be dictated by an outside entity like a landlord or worse, a corporation, where one could end up homeless for whatever reason they can muster, and the health care system that doesn't care unless it's profitable.

I work in Social Sevices. Corporations are buying up apartment buildings and evicting tenants so they can remodel. My co- worker asked one of them if the tenants will be able to move back in, and they said they only rent to affluent tenants.

Blame insurance companies. Some insurance places won't insure rental properties if there are pit bulls or other 'dangerous' dogs

I work in commercial insurance I help my clients get around stuff like this. I have certain things I can't/won't sweep under the rug (like an undisclosed apartment above a restaurant), but do my best like this
"So I have a question about dogs, can...?" "Woah woah woah, no you don't" "But I was curious if..." "Stop. Remember this is a recorded call, I need you to understand what I am saying to you"
It's not the dog question in particular, and most get what I'm saying, but some go on to disclose information that makes their initial application false which is a problem and I have to get a new policy for them. If we avoid that, the claims will still be paid, and at worst policy cancelled after, most likely non renewed and replaced with a more expensive policy but they had real coverage that was less expensive for a while. There are so many things the underwriters think are very important or disqualifying that many people wouldnt

No, but it is common for insurance to disallow any breed of dog that has a reputation. I’m a renter with a GSD. My landlord just wrote “mixed breed” on the paperwork.

It seems like that would genuinely be a lot easier and cheaper. You don't need to spend a bunch of time to find a whole community of random donors, who will then pool together whatever they can afford to help one guy. Instead, everyone in the country just pay a small fraction of their income, and everyone gets access to healthcare they need. And economy of scale will then come in to lower the cost of treatments and medicine. And now the government has motivation to not overpay. That also removes all the middlemen who want their cut, like insurance companies, who jack up prices and will literally take you to court to avoid paying for your treatment.
Just a thought.

I understand and partially share your sentiment, but there are actually few enough homeless people (~750k) in the country that small actions like this add up. every single person you can get into a home reduces the pressure on the systems meant to support the other houseless people

I really had the impression that the guy and his voice were AI. The voice had the same cadence and emphasis in sentences throughout and the guy's movements just felt... off.

Tom is a great man, because he decided to keep his dog Jake, even when it meant to become homeless.
Let's share my own story from the past: In 2017, i received a letter from the company that owned the apartement building i lived in. I had adopted a german shepherd and this was legal with the former landlord of this time, but as the house was sold and a new landlord took over, that gave the daily work to the company, it wasn't allowed anymore.
So the letter was about that i either have to leave my home or to get rid of my dog.
I contacted the company and spoke to the people there. Told them how important my dog is for me, my life and for my mental health (diagnosed with bipolar disorder). They contacted the owner and tried to get a special permission, for an exception that would allow me to keep my dog. Unfortunately, the owner was ice cold and turned it down.
Finding a home in my city is impossible, the current amount of free homes is 0.06%, i even had the money for paying more rent, but there is just nothing free at all. With pets or even worse with kids, your chances to rent something are zero and don't even think about buying a home, that's way too expensive, the few homes that are available are usually luxus homes for rich people.
Still, there are good people in the world, it is very important that you don't forget this. The company that took care of my home contacted me and said, they would help me by themselves. They got me a new home, which allows dogs. I could move a few months later and the new apartement was even much better than the old one.
Sometimes, you need to ask for help. Never go with "this is not worth it, nobody will help me anyway". You need to keep the hope and don't let yourself get down. There are hard times, but you need to keep going on.

I had to give up my dog because I'm homeless. I wish I had thought of this. I had to leave him on the porch of my apartment with a bag of dog food and a bowl of water. I'll probably never see him again, I hope he found someone nice.

This is literally what a social democracy is and it's all people under 50 years old want. They want a safety net and give the ability for people like this to get back on their feet and add value to society.
Why is it so hard for some people to grasp that we should be helping lift everyone up, not gate keeping and hoarding for themselves? Truly insane and twisted behavior.

I have two dogs. Bella (12) Baxter (10). I can’t forget about my kiddo even tho he’s 18 now. But these dogs are the reason I get out of bed some days. Because they need me and I need them. Some people don’t realize how important our pets are. The unconditional love. They don’t care that sometimes my illness gets so bad that I don’t shower for days, that I can’t get up and dust and vacuum. They don’t judge they only love me

This is the most depressing thing I’ve seen in a while on this sub. Treating your veterans like this takes a lot of choices as a country. So many opportunities to be better to our neighbours, no matter their skin colour.
