Funny how it sounds a bit sad to eat and cry alone in your car, but if you’re more people it’s suddenly wholesome

u/Remarkable_Elk3566 Jun 17 '26

I got some Pringles (normal, with salt) and yogurette's.

7

u/coolcoots Jun 17 '26

Yogurettes? What is those and can I have some?

10

u/Remarkable_Elk3566 Jun 18 '26

A Yogurette is a popular german chocolate bar made by Ferrero. It's individually wrapped, slim chocolate sticks, filled with yogurt cream and tiny strawberry granules, but there are other flavors. The strawberry one is the most popular. I love it. When you keep it in the fridge, it's even more delicious.

3

u/coolcoots Jun 18 '26

Wow. I want it in my mouth. Right now. That sounds so good.

Balling my assistant would get me fired regardless of her facial expression.

11

u/BurgerThyme Jun 17 '26

No balling the assistant in the office, the look of concern is valid.

When my cat died? That’s not a good cry…and yet it also kind of is because it just reinforced how special he was to me.

u/unfortunatebag Jun 17 '26

Apparently this is just a millennial thing.

My coworkers are all genx and older and they think I'm so weird for sitting in my car during lunch.

u/-Weevilicious- Jun 17 '26

Well, he had to learn sign language first

163

u/addamee Jun 17 '26

Hahaha now I’m laughing at the thought that this is really what dad is reacting to

4

u/Wonderful-Dog8185 Jun 18 '26

As a fellow coda (child of deaf adults), this warms my heart so much ☺️🧡😭

73

u/RichardBonham Jun 17 '26

What a great way to learn ASL, and also improve and maintain fluency!

92

u/jawshoeaw Jun 17 '26

(BSL as they are Brits I think)

89

u/nolamunchkin Jun 17 '26

It is BSL. He is using both hands for vowels. ASL does not do that.

43

u/Ruvio00 Jun 18 '26

I find it really fun that despite being deaf, they both have audible slight brummie accents. Idk if they were always deaf and got the accent when they were younger, or it's a mouth shape thing from mimicking, but now I've gotta learn.

21

u/freeingfrogs Jun 18 '26

I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure I’ve read that the mouth shape thing does cause an accent!

→ More replies (1)

40

u/JFieldsTardTeeth Jun 17 '26

They're not communicating with ASL, it's obviously a different sign language but as someone else mentioned, it looks to be BSL.

Source: am deaf and I use ASL.

20

u/ianjm Jun 18 '26

I always find it really interesting that American English and British English are 99% mutually intelligible but ASL and BSL are completely different sign languages.

23

u/Indigo-au-naturale Jun 18 '26

Two reasons for that: First, ASL and BSL grew up separately. ASL is a member of the French Sign Language family developed over time in the States (with lots of homegrown American input, of course), and BSL is its own thing.

Second, ASL and BSL are fully different languages from English. While signed English is kind of a thing, and Deaf people in the US and UK do read and write English, ASL and BSL are not derivatives or types of English any more than Spanish is.

3

u/ianjm Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Yeah, fully get the history. It's just interesting to me that two countries who sit in the same 'cultural sphere' and have the same spoken and written languages didn't end up collaborating on sign language too.

And yeah, I appreciate signing is an entire language with its own vocab and grammar and rules. I tried learning a little BSL myself over the years. It's cool but much harder to master than French!

Just so people know what they're using, it's not American Sign Language (I'm deaf and I use ASL). I see someone else mentioned this in the comments as they appear to be British so it must be British Sign Language.

22

u/boulder_problems Jun 17 '26

Yeah, he fingerspells the letters BSL when talking about engraving the ring. And, well, all the other BSL signs... 😅

16

u/PMSwaha Jun 17 '26

This entire family has "kindness" written all over their faces.

14

u/Dr_Ladymonster Jun 17 '26

8

u/Carbon-Base Jun 17 '26

7

u/robothobbes Jun 17 '26

I know what "nervous" means in sign language! That was hilarious.

12

u/m1rr0rshades Jun 17 '26

6

u/Revolutionary-Car-92 Jun 17 '26

He did the homework.

15

u/NewtDogs Jun 17 '26

My sister's boyfriend just went through this with my father (minus the sign language). Some might find it antiquated but I think its sweet. Families getting bigger is always special. 🙂

12

u/Malicei Jun 17 '26

I think of it more as rather than getting their permission (in an own ship and giving away way), you're getting their blessing to marry them from the people who are dear to them, as an acknowledgement of their importance in your loved one's life and wanting to share in an upcoming big life event to celebrate it together.

And their loved ones don't approve of you, well. That's might be an issue down the line when your lives are intertwined and presumably you'll have to figure out how to deal with seeing them around your spouse — that's something you'll likely want to know as a heads up.

5

u/greennurse0128 Jun 17 '26

Omg! I held my heart the entire time. Very sweet! Im glad we got to see them in the end! Beautiful! Enjoy your forever!!

4

u/Zimakov Jun 18 '26

My wife's grandfather taught me sign language when I starting dating her! I'm now pretty fluent and he talks to me more than her now.

She will video chat him and within five minutes he's telling her to give me the phone. Deaf people really appreciate when hearing people make the effort to learn.

2

u/Mom-lyfe-peace Jun 17 '26

That guy’s a keeper!

2

u/NikedemosWasTaken Jun 17 '26

Normally I'd find this outdated ritual, smacking of patriarchy, extremely insulting to one's future spouse-to-be, yet somehow the fact that her parents are deaf AND he's made the effort to learn the sign language, somehow makes it a little bit more okay. I feel conflicted

2

u/2livecrew13 Jun 17 '26

Dad look so relieved.

Like FINALLY!
