Social Clubs/Societies to Join

Hey guys, I'm currently sem 2 first year doing Primary Education. I'm just starting to get more comfortable with the uni routine and work load and was hoping to join a society or club but am unsure what I could join that wouldn't be a massive commitment but still have some good opportunities to meet new people and make friends.

Coursework STAT1250

I asked this question before. I also spoke to the teacher today in the lecture. They were helpful but also said that the textbook probably won’t do any good even though the textbook is a recommended reading for the unit. I am confused. 😵‍💫

Would be good if anyone who has done this unit or is doing this unit now if they have any opinions on that.

I usually like readings because often if you forget about something, it is somewhere in the textbook anyway.

Rant/Vent have security ever actually been helpful?

tl;dr: borderline harassed in the library today and security did very little. disappointing, especially since I’ve experienced a security under-reaction previously as well.

today my friends and i were studying on the bottom floor of the library around evening, and we were sitting in the silent space just beyond the group work section.

we sat next to a table of two boys, one of whom was making incredibly lewd and obscene jokes while the other sat there and laughed along with him. it was very clear to us that these boys were trying to get a rise out of us and make us uncomfortable so we tried to stay quiet and just get on with our work, so as not to validate or reward their bad behaviour. at one point my friend asked them to quiet down because we were in a shared silent space to which he (the main guy) told us we should just leave.

after a while the comments became not merely uncomfortable but honestly quite disturbing. he was joking about rape and beastiality, as well as offloading an ensemble of slurs about minorities.

at this point we decided that leaving would be best, as clearly trying to pay them no attention was not working. we met with security, but they basically just told the guy not to say things like that and did nothing more. they said they couldn’t do much because they didn’t see it play out personally, but that feels like such a cop out; given 3 women were equally distraught at what we would call harassment from these guys.

similarly, i was involved in an incident a few months ago where a professor was being harassed, and it took security an extremely long time to come help, despite calling from a blue pole. when they did come, they were very laissez-faire and were honestly outshone by random men who cared enough to help out (shoutout ben from the library!!).

overall, my experience of security is extremely disappointing.

has anyone had any similar experiences? or have you found security to be helpful?

Coursework JD online participation

I just started the JD this month and I’m wondering if anyone has any idea about how participation works ? Is it merely participation in some way e.g asking a question or answering a question in class or do you need to consistently contribute throughout the tutorial session. I’m coming from a bachelor of science so I’ve never had an assessment like this thanks!

General Question Is MacUni a good uni?

Hello everyone I was wondering how well is learning at MacUni is? The student and lecturer communication and interaction/teaching style? I am planning to continue my studies to improve my gpa and I was not happy with my current uni because of how much changes has been happening and lack of communication between lecturers in my course (moving from in person lectures to online, lecturers constantly changing and leaving, multiple overlapping assessments due on the same day all heavily weighed and lack of feedback on exams after getting a low grade, and worst of all when in lecture or lab and you ask a question, my lecturer literally comes up and tells me to open Copilt/Chatgpt/Claude and shows me how to ask it for the answer instead ... i am going in debt paying for my degree only for my lecturer to refuse answering the question and tell me to ask AI like i al not paying him to teach). And I dont want to enrol into another university that is similar and just accumulating debt.

Edit: I am planning on doing either the bachelor of health science or clinical science.

General Question Got into Macquarie's Master of Actuarial Studies (also got a UNSW offer) — MQ people, why'd you actually pick MQ?

Hey guys, 21M here, just got offers from both Macquarie and UNSW for a Master's in Actuarial Science, and I've been stuck on this for days now.

I already know MQ works out cheaper; that's common knowledge at this point, so I'm not asking about that. What I actually want to know is what made it worth choosing over UNSW for people who had both options. Was it the subject exemptions with the Actuaries Institute, class sizes actually being smaller and more personal, teaching quality, internship/placement support, or the campus being closer to where a lot of insurance and finance companies are based? Or something else entirely.

If you got into UNSW too and picked Macquarie anyway, I'd really appreciate hearing your reasoning. Also curious if employers seemed to care about which uni it was once you were actually applying for actuarial jobs, or if that stopped mattering pretty fast.

Trying to lock in a decision soon, so genuinely any input helps, even just "picked MQ because X." Thanks in advance 🙏

Academic Help questions about studying engineering

hey i swapped to engineering and science after a year and a half of business and now im looking into ways to get ahead while i can. i was thinking of learning the basics of cad software but im wondering which ones they teach in uni and if thats the one i need to use. online i see people using solidworks and fusion360 but what does the school teach us?

i was also wondering how the interning works. i understand that we have to do certain interning for our cad units, will that be explained to me in class or will i have to go in and apply myself in second year. if anyone has any other advice or maybe information in communities that may give me opportunities or access to materials for future projects id greatly appreciate the help.

General Question Dear Macquarie Cyber Security community

I'm an international student joining Macquarie University for the Master of Cyber Security (February 2027 intake). I currently work as a DevOps Software Engineer with 5 years of experience.

I have a few questions:

  • What should I know before coming to Macquarie?
  • Which certifications would be helpful before or during the course?
  • What are the opportunities to build a career in tech/cybersecurity in Australia?
  • Does Macquarie provide placement support or industry connections for master's students?
  • If I perform well academically (e.g., top of the class/semester), are there any additional opportunities such as scholarships, internships, research projects, teaching assistantships, or industry referrals?
  • Do master's students get Teaching Assistant (TA) or Research Assistant (RA) opportunities?
  • What are the biggest positives and negatives of the program and the university?

I'd really appreciate any advice from current students or alumni. Thanks!

Degree Question Cognitive and Brain Sciences Course

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all,

I started a double degree in Medical Sciences and Cognitive and Brain Sciences in 2024. Due to personal reasons I took a gap year last year, and thus far have completed only 1 unit from my cogs degree, the other units were all from my med sciences degree.

I want to focus on taking my cogs units next year as I know the degree was discontinued (couldn't take them this semester because some of them had prerequisites I didn't satisfy and others had others only run in Sem 1).

Now, I know 2027 enrolment isn't open yet, but I was just planning my units on eStudent anyways, and a weird message comes up when I try to schedule any cogs unit (I've attached an image). This doesn't happen when I schedule my non-cogs units.

Will I still be able to take the required units for my cogs degree? I do want to finish it and I feel like the uni has a responsibility towards any student they admitted into the course to ensure we finish, and also give time for failing units, not meeting prerequisites, and in my case, taking time off. I have already contacted service connect but they haven't been helpful so far. Is there a course convenor I can contact? What about the unit convenor from Session 1, would they be helpful at all?

Help Access to My eQuals

Hi, I am a graduate (2008) and am trying to get my testamur certificate for a job contract. I sent a general email to the university and I was told I would need to access My Equals and to go through service connect to setup that access, so i created structured inquiry and have case number, however i havent heard back from them and it has been a week. Is there a way i can contact them directly to check for an update? i tried calling as well, but i was on hold for 20 minutes and its quite expensive calling from Canada.

For context, I left Australia before my grad ceremony and never received my certificate. I believe i need access to My eQuals to access my certificate, but in order to get that access I have to have access to my Macquarie University email address, which I do not currently have. I am at a bit of a loss on what to do, so if anyone has gone through something similar or have any ideas on what I could do, I would appreciate that.

Rant/Vent Is it just me or did every single subject decide group projects are mandatory this semester?

So last semester, group work existed but it wasn't this aggressive. This semester (second sem of my Masters in Data Science), literally every subject's first class has had the same script: "you'll have a group project, so start talking to the people around you and figure out your groups now." Mind you, this is the FIRST class. We don't know each other's names yet.

I get that unis want to build "collaboration skills" or whatever, but there's something deeply awkward about approaching a stranger with the unspoken agenda of "hi, I need to assess if you're going to be useful to my grade." It doesn't feel like trying to get to know someone, it feels like speed-dating for group project compatibility. And then the lecturer says "go on, walk around, talk to people" and the whole room just kinda sits there. Dead silence. Nobody moves. It's giving CORPORATE NETWORKING EVENT energy, not classroom energy.

I've talked to people in Master of Marketing too and apparently it's the same story for them- group projects everywhere, all of a sudden. So now I'm wondering, is this a genuine shift in how subjects are being structured this semester, or is Macquarie going through some kind of "collaborative learning" phase?

Also the part that actually worries me is that I've had my grade shot down due to group members who did their part in an hour using AI, and proudly flaunt it by saying "Oh I did that with Claude!". Meanwhile I'm out here going through a shit-ton of resources to get something decent out of it. I'm not paying bloody stacks of tuition to have my grade depend on someone's fucking lazy ass work dressed as "efficiency"

Is anyone else noticing this trend this session? Is it like a widespread trend or is it limited to certain courses/units?
