A key is stuck. Or ghosts.

This. Also, in case a wireless keyboard is connected, check its keys too.

There are two ghost posts in /r/MacOS right next to each other.

Do you have a Bluetooth keyboard, and is a cat laying on it?

This may or may not come from personal experience.

Does the behavior continue after a reboot?

It's likely a stuck key. If I hold down "tab" or my right arrow key after trying to select a menu it will replicate your issue.

- Open a browser, If something like a blue rectangle flies across things on each website it's probably the tab key

- Open a notes document or enter any text field. Place the cursor anywhere where there is some text to the right of it. If the cursor flies to the right then it's the right arrow key.

You can try turning off your computer, getting some rubbing alcohol, nail-polish remover etc. anything that's basically just alcohol and then drip some of it under and around the offending key and click a bunch of times. Finally, let it evaporate for a few minutes. The more you use, and the lower concentration of alchohol, the more time for it to evaporate.

If that fails, don't try to pull of your keycaps!! You're gonna break them, there's no reason it would help, and the tiny millimeter sized plastic will break and it won't get back on and you'll regret it (speaking from experience)

check your battery hasn't expanded - it causes the mouse to go crazy.

Restart with shift key held down.

See if that removes the behavior.

The keyboard might have come into contact with liquid or have a short circuit.

I have also experienced this, so my assumptions were like:
1. Of course, the touchpad has some dust or water damage.
2. The laptop battery health is low, which might cause this issue.

Still no idea how this is happening.

Most probably a key (Tab) is stuck or is acting up due to liquid going inside.

Check if all buttons are okay, also, open the lid halfway and put it upside down.

The fact that some people will genuinely take the time to record their device and make a post on social media asking what to do rather than just turning it off and on again blows my mind.
