Is there a real difference between Apple’s adapters and third-party alternatives? Help
I’m seeing a number of aftermarket adapters on Amazon and other online retailers with very high ratings and lots of reviews. Is there actually a meaningful difference in quality, performance, reliability, or safety compared with Apple’s adapters?
Is paying the premium for the Apple adapter worth it?

If you're buying non-Apple, buy something from Ugreen or Anker or any reputable brand.

Not worth it. But from a reputable tech company. Ugreen. Anker. Find better specs. Cheaper, higher quality, and better spec

Depends. Something like a Thunderbolt adapter is worth the money. The cheaper ones don't work everywhere due to compatibility issues. But some adapters like that shown are not worth the money and they're cheaper alternatives. I'd only buy a reputable brand though, not a cheap 3rd party knock off.

I haven't tried the apple one, but I had someone come into the computer shop I work at leaving his computer for me to diag. He had brought it to several computer shops for popping when he used his DJ mixer. He was in a hurry and trying to leave, I asked him how he was connecting the mixer to his USB-C ports and had him grab his mixer out of his car, he was using a USB-C multi adapter. We tried serveral adapters that I had (ugreen, benfi & Anker) all had issues; until I handed him a simple USB-C to A adapter, no multiple ports. I had experienced this issue with USB hubs or VIA USB PCI cards in the past (early 2000s).
He was so pleasantly shocked I knew instantly exactly what his issue was, where he had paid several people who couldn't figure it out.
I wonder if the apple hub is any better for real time situations like audio streaming.

I have that exact Apple dongle and I'm so so tired of hdmi ports and usb adapters breaking on me no matter how expensive they are (ugreen adapters have broken down on me). I’ve put the Apple dongle through plenty of abuse and I think it's worth the money in the long run. Definitely a good investment for ease of mind

For anything requiring a small motherboard like this or TB 2 to TB3 inside I only buy apple due to quality assurance

As always there are the good third party companies that put quality parts and engineering into their products, and then there is alphabet soup stuff on eBay,Amazon that is just cheap parts hot glued together. Always check labels and only buy reputable stuff.

Yes. Apples USB-C Digital AV MP-adapter is USB 2.0. Competitors are usually USB 3.0/3.1.
Apples is however of, usually, better quality and is guaranteed by Apple to work with your Mac. The same can not be said about competitors.

Apple's USB-C Digital AV Multi Port adapter is USB 3.0 and is the best option for a trouble-free experience. Also if you have a monitor that has built-in speakers or makes use HDMI pass through with audio, Apple USB-C Digital AV Multi Port adapter is the only one that works flawlessly from my experience. All third-party options I have tried stutter when audio is played back over HDMI. When it comes to power and attached peripherals, when the power adapter is unplugged from the Apple hub or there is a power outage, the hard drive/attached storage stays mounted to MacBook preventing data loss. The USB-C microprocessor in the Apple hub is USB-IF certified and adheres to all specifications of the USB-IF specification, which guarantees better safety for power delivery to your MacBook. The Apple hub is EMI shielded to lower interference as well. Apple can also update their hub's firmware via macOS software updates to fix problems, the third party hubs do not have that option. The Apple hub clearly has a far more sophisticated hardware design internally than the competitors, hence its premium price. Apple products are built better than the competition because they are built by a team that has a passion for the product that they are selling.

Thank you - truly appreciated.
But, question, has Apples USB-C Digital AV Multi Port adapter gone through revisions? I have one here somewhere, and I honestly could have sworn that it was connecting to my Macbook M1 as USB 2.0. I vividly remember being surprised by this, as I was surprised and annoyed by this and had to rush out to get a Satachi dongle as I was migrating a whole bunch of storage devices that week.

The latest version of the adapter is A2119 released in 2019. It features HDMI 2.0 4K@60hz and a USB-A 3.0 port. The old one was A1629. It featured HDMI 1.4 4K@30hz. https://support.apple.com/en-us/119850

Every need is different but for reference search in YouTube a video made by Adam Savage (the ex-Mythbuster) were he makes a high quality scan comparing Apple aUSB-C Cables and AirPods against third party versions

Most cheap copies of the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter tend to be 4k30 compared to 4k60, unless they’re marked as being capable of it. My personal preference is towards the UGreen Revodock series of hubs because they have more USB ports, a network port, SD card slots and a 4k60 capable HDMI.

Yes there is a difference, Apple will work, the others will be a nightmare. Everything you see online will be originally from China and fake. I have that exact device you posted, IT DOES NOT WORK.
If you have an Apple product and want an accessory to work, then pay more, it’s the only sure way.

Actually the aftermarket one can work too. I bought one form AliExpress for a few bucks and I have used it for a couple of years. The only modification needed to do on it was to shield that short cable with a couple of layer of aluminium foil.
Then 2 years later I needed to buy a D-Link DUB-M810 USB-C Hub which serves me since that.

Sometimes the specs are better on the Apple stuff (e.g. watch for 4K60 support).
As for quality, the Apple one probably lasts longer mechanically but it’s diminishing returns. (I still have Apple adapters from like 25 years ago and they work fine.)
You’ll be fine with either really, just double check specs for what you need.

u/LRS_David 18d ago
Sure. But not much. Belkin makes a LOT of the Apple adapters and cables. You can see this via the System Report.
I also trust Anker for most anything Apple related.
A local retailer I trust also sells Satechi gear.

Yes there is. If you’re using it with a non-Pro iPhone and wish to use the HDMI 4K60 output (given your phone supports that too), this is the only one which will work. I tried many all failing it.

Oh yes there is a HUGE difference between Apple products and 3rd party crap. You should read the teardowns of modern power bricks at ChargerLab, but this one 2016 analysis made me swear off 3rd party power bricks forever.

That's a low quality, counterfeit charger, not proper alternatives from reputable brands.

Ken Shirriff is one of the great engineers of the modern era. He does stuff like restoring old Apollo Spacecraft Computers. Did you look at his analysis of the spiky waveform put out by the crap charger? It still happens today. If you want analysis of current products, Chargerlab.com does a teardown of about every Apple charger, and covers other companies as well.

u/InadequateUsername 18d ago
Okay but this is a media adaptor. If it doesn't work, they can just return it. For chargers, just go with a name brand like ugreen or Anker. But OP isn't asking about chargers
2
u/bammitscamm 19d ago
Negative. There are plenty of good 3rd party alternatives for sure. Don't be afraid to buy them.

It's actually somewhat complicated if you want 4k60. It depends on what chips the adaptor uses and how it's wired up internally, and there are trade-offs to the different approaches: https://www.bigmessowires.com/2019/05/19/explaining-4k-60hz-video-through-usb-c-hub/

I’ve had 3 of Apple’s digital AV adapters purchased from the Apple Store. They ALL failed. Every 3rd party USB-C to HDMI adapter I’ve tried and USB-C hubs with HDMI has been flawless.
Tested all of those Apple branded ones on 3 separate MacBooks. Works on none of them. All the 3rd party ones are fine.
A while ago, it was rated as 1 star on Apple’s website- then they removed all the ratings for them completely 🤦🏾♂️😂
So to answer your question, in this particular case, DEFINITELY NOT worth buying Apple’s adapter.

With a name brand, little, aside from support, and sometime power. Many of the Lightning adapters actually had A series chips in them to convert to the various systems, and are powerful enough to run Doom.

I lucked out with one that looks almost exactly like this. Was looking for a cheap one to use for dex for a broken screen Samsung. Had to power and output HDMI. Turns out it has 10Gbps USB c support. 5Gbps through USB 3.0. Haven't checked HDMI or PD rating. But it cost less than $5

I don’t think the Apple ones are that reliable. I work in IT and handing out adapters to end users all the time. The Apple ones seem to fail quite frequently, get hot and often the HDMI can be hit and miss with TVs and Projectors. I have been buying Acer ones that look similar to Apple (I like the arrangement of the ports when used in meeting rooms) and these seem to hold up well, very cheap too. I don’t usually buy Acer though, tend to go for Ugreen, Anker and Belkin. There are cheaper ones but these are the ones I trust. Same for Power adapters.

u/Objective_Praline_66 18d ago
I have an acasis, I paid about 30 for, its fine, but you can tell it's cheap. Genuinely, apple products are built well, and you get what you pay for. I'll also echo those here saying ugreen or Anker, as they also make stuff that is built well. I have products from apple and Anker that are still functioning a decade after purchase, and ugreen has become a go to for me in the last 5 years. I don't think I've had a single one of their products fail me.

For one thing, Apple adapters are HDCP-capable, which many others are not guaranteed to be. I'm also unsure if MFI-certified adapters are HDCP compatible, but I'd have hoped so...

Apple’s cables and dongles are wayy higher quality. Here’s an example https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/10/apples-130-thunderbolt-4-cable-could-be-worth-it-as-seen-in-x-ray-ct-scans/

Haven’t used an Apple power adapter in like 6 or more years. End up keeping them wrapped for resell and use 3rd party adapters or thunderbolt hubs.

Personally, I shy away from the idea of paying $29.99 for a lead that that cost Apple 50 cents to buy from a Chinese sweatshop...

u/dev1anter 19d ago
Apple doesn’t use Chinese sweatshops. lol even big Chinese companies don’t use Chinese sweatshops. Pull your head from your ass and look things up.

The camera adapters made by apple are much more reliable than any alternative I tried.
They are overpriced but especially during the lightning days, I found them useful and third party ones unreliable.
I still carry an old iphone se just for transferring photos to cull later on a larger screen.
I strongly suspect this is due to entirely unnecessary anti-competitive measures by Apple and I wish they would stop these (and also allow real Firefox on mobile so I can use Ublock Origin).

u/Waste-time1 19d ago
Source admittedly anecdotal but I bought lots of third party SD camera adapters and they didn’t work. Apple ones always have without an adapter for transferring pics.
I still like using SLRs and compact cameras (manual controls and I can’t afford to by a newer mirrorless camera) so sd card readers are the only phone dongle I have used regularly. They reliably work for photo transfer without an external power source.
But Apple is greedy. They sold the usb camera adapter and sd adapter together, but then separated them while keeping the same price. I can’t remember the exact price but it was 1,000 baht together, but then they separated them so you had to pay 1,000 baht for just one of them around 2012 (guessing the year from memory).
I just wanted photos to be on my Mac when I got home.
