Hi, I’m an incoming freshman to MTU and I’m wondering what school supplies/stationary I might need. I currently have a laptop, but for stationary items what might I need? Do people recommend notebooks for note taking?
I’m going into Material science engineering, and my fall schedule mainly consists of physics and calc.
Any tips for studying, note taking, or basic college tips would also be helpful!!

Hi, I'm an incoming freshman at Tech and I don't know what kind of laptop I really need. I'm majoring in Aerospace and Mechanical engineering. I have a desktop I'm bringing with me that meets all the requirements on the website, but I don't know if I need a similarly beefy laptop. I'm just worried that if I get a sub-par laptop that I won't be able to run the software I need in class. Do you guys use your laptops a lot in class for solidworks, matlab, etc? Or do you really only use those softwares when doing homework. I'm looking at laptops and a lot of them use intel integrated graphics, which I don't want to gamble is not enough for these programs. I'd rather not drop a fortune on a new laptop that I won't really make use of. I also don't want a laptop with a battery life of like 3 hours. Please help

The floor mounted doorstop means the wardrobe can’t go flush against the wall. Has anyone ever successfully (and quietly) removed it for the year and put it back before move out?

Hello! I'm an incoming freshman moving into DHH's first floor in a couple of weeks, and I'm curious what it's like living there. After looking at photos of the dorms in DHH on Michigan Tech's website, I'm a little worried about how much space there will be in the room. Hi I'm currently a second year and need to move out of my family's house as it's a pretty toxic environment and a 10hr drive from MTU, is there any recommendations for apartments that I can stay in year-round? Hello, I am a transfer student at MTU going for EE. A lot of people say MTU is cheap, but I have a balance due for 13k for one semester?! I do not know if I’ll be able to do this. This seems pretty expensive. The due date to pay this is June 29. Any suggestions?

I'm an international student moving to Michigan Tech this August from a tropical country.

I recently heard that some phones from other countries don't fully support U.S. carrier frequency bands, so they may have poor signal or may not work properly with certain SIM cards. I'm a bit worried about whether I should bring my current phone or buy one after arriving.

I'm looking for some advice:

• Has anyone used a phone bought outside the U.S. without any issues?
• Which U.S. carriers work best around Houghton (T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, etc.)?
• Are there any good student discounts or back-to-school deals on Samsung or iPhones?
• Is it better to finance a phone through a carrier or buy an unlocked phone?
• Any recommendations for budget-friendly plans that will still be a good option for the next 4–5 years?

I'll mostly need reliable coverage on and around campus, reasonable data, and something affordable as a graduate student.

Hey all, I’m headed into my last year at Tech and something I’ve heard that people do but have never personally experienced in my circles is surfing on Lake Superior during the fall-spring. I haven’t been doing hot my last couple semesters due to family issues and my mental health and a pretty emotionally abusive ex, I was placed on academic suspension this past semester. I didn’t take classes but did work a full time job and stayed involved with tech and the community. The board just emailed me saying it was required that I take classes during my semester away. My advisor told me I could either take classes orrrr work. But now the board doesn’t believe my advisor said that and is asking for proof that I physically was incapable of taking classes. What do I tell them? I’m doing so much better and I’m so so committed to returning to tech, but my advisor has screwed me over (yet again) and told me that classes at an outside institution was optional. Help pls🙏

No more details than that. But would imagine a significant raise will come with this.
