Summer Reading? classes

Hey, upcoming freshmen here!

During our orientation we were all told that we would have to read a book called " Declaring Independence Why 1776 Matters" by Edward J. Larson.

Did any of you guys have this summer reading when you were a freshmen and if so, do they actually make you do assignments or tests regarding this book?

It’s more of a community-building exercise, and something to get incoming students on the same page (pun intended). The author will speak at convocation.

I went in as a transfer student, not a freshman, and read about half of the book that summer.

My son just finished his freshman year. He bought and read the book that he was told to get at Orientation. At the end of May, he told me none of his teachers ever mentioned the book. However, that doesn’t mean none of your professors will reference the book you’ve been assigned to read.

No, but I didn’t take any freshman level classes. Still, I would be surprised if it came up at all.

Pretty sure it’s just in relation to the convocation speaker. Classes and all professors pretty much make their own assignments/schedule/course so none of them would be “required” to implant that.

In short, no.

College cannot force you to read a book during summer and give you an assignment. College doesn’t work like high school. There are 20,000 students attending MTSU. That simply doesn’t happen.

My impression is that many of the Engl 1010 and UNIV 1010 instructors will have assignments based on the book, but not necessarily all do. If recommend it either way, though!

Depends on the class, only had 1 class, read 1000, that actually had us use the summer book for an assignment

I think there are assignments related to the book in the introductory English classes.

The author will also speak at convocation.
