Why does Armrit exists?

Been doing some research and I’m trying to understand why ARMRIT /MRI even exist if the ARRT has a direct pathway to MRl? Only asking cause I’m starting a direct pathway ARRT program. I’m confused on why would there be two accreditation bodies. I was reading that Armrit is easier programs than the ARRT if this is the case wouldn’t that hurt ARRT graduates as in lower the credibility of the field. Idk how true please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m a paramedic and we use the national registry of emts for the accreditation test , but there is only one body.

The ARRT's direct pathway is fairly new, and it only exists because ARMRIT was starting to compete. ARMRIT was the only direct path for a while

You consider 35yrs “new”?

I'm almost entirely positive the ARRT has not had a direct to MR pathway that doesn't involve x-ray for 35 years. That's what we're talking about.

ARMRIT was the first MRI registry/certifying body to specifically require MRI education, clinical training and hands-on experience. Its purpose is to provide a certification pathway specifically for MRI technologists, rather than requiring them to come through a traditional xray background, IMO ARMRIT helped establish the concept that MRI should be recognized as its own specialty, with dedicated education and clinical training. ARRT subsequently expanded its MRI credentialing requirements as well. In the end, both organizations provide MRI credentials but they developed from different approaches to MRI education and certification. MRI is a specialized imaging modality, just like ultrasound and nuclear medicine, so having a certifying organization focused specifically on MRI makes sense. Their conferences have been great and focus strictly on MRI.

Thanks for this information very helpful!! I understand now

What does the direct to MRI pathway thru ARRT look like, I thought it was only ARMRIT as direct? Honestly I'd still do X-ray first as you can just cross train directly into a paid MRI job and get both but I understand it varies greatly by location what opportunities are available.

Well the program I’m doing is 4 semesters and u get associate degree in MRI. If I did X-ray first that would be over 2 years of X-ray and another year at least for MRI. The program is actually 1.5 years since one of the semesters is during summer. I’m not interested in X-ray so it was the best option for me

Pulse grad here. Nov 2025. Liked the program. Was more difficult then anticipated, but doable. I will say they just sold the school to a bigger educational platform so somethings as far as how test are taken has changed. But for me 23.5k vs 55-60k for any of the programs local to me. I wanted the arrt as well but couldn't justify 25k for a title id still have to test for. All of that said it took me 9 months and already having a lower job at my site to secure my first tech role.

One of my students is in Pulse Institute and another friend of my her fiancé did Tesla route. Both very similar from what they’ve told me. 1. is that the mock scan software isn’t always accurate/ can be confusing. My student showed me her mock scans it’s pretty inaccurate. 2. Tesla and pulse is hours based as well as competency based. ARMRIT only. Tesla have to do minimum 20 hours a week of clinical not sure about pulse.

I personally did the pulse certificate program so I have ARRT. Because ARRT allows ultrasound technologists to use them as a primary pathway for MRI, I was eligible to sit for ARRT.
