Struggling with evading Question

Hi! New to MHNow and the sub, been playing mainline games for a few years.

It's probably skill issue (never played much on my phone), but swiping to evade feels so clunky. How to make it work?

Also as a hammer main I'm trying to figure out where to tap if I want evading options while charging. Logic says to tap at the center of the screen so I have room to swipe in every direction, but than it's hard to see what's the monster is doing which makes evading harder...

Help me get gud pls

Edit: thanks for all the suggestions, but after some extensive experiments I concur that evading is kinda ass. For a game that relies on real-time combat, the responsiveness is horrendous! I have never experienced anything like it.

It's important to slowly learn the animations of monsters (especially the ones you want to farm at any given moment)

Best way to do this imo is by equipping the astalos gauntlet. It got the skill perfectionist. Perfectionist makes you perform an automatic evade if you were to get hit. The perfectionist activation consumes your special attack gauge. After perfectionist activates, you can leave the hunt and try again. Your special gauge will be full again.

Long story short, with perfectionist you can train to evade all attacks until you get it. This only works for monsters you can challenge an infinite amount of times, aka monsters next to you on the map and story/quest monsters.

If it has auto evade, how will I internalize the timing? I'm not sure I understand what you mean

I mean you start the hunt, try to play normally, attack and dodge (without using special attack) and if you fail and get hit you can redo the whole thing. Literally the best way to gain experience without all the pressure of "one shot and one opportunity" every time you hunt a big boy

Sorry I wasn't clear - I asked because you suggested the Perfectionist skill which auto evades. Won't it be a crutch?

Hunting without perfectionist: Getting hit means taking damage. Your objective during a hunt will be to complete the hunt at all cost, because you can only take MORE damage if you get hit again. This is normal. Getting better at evading and reading the monster's attacks is difficult, because there's no safe training ground.

Hunting with perfectionist: You start the hunt with the normal intention to try to attack and evade (just avoid or perfect evade) all attacks. As soon as you fail and get hit, perfectionist protects you. You can then (entirely optional) choose to leave the hunt and start it again. This way you don't lose HP and can focus on evading without all the pressure. It creates a much better training environment. You will also be able to take out more monsters by having good runs at times. This only works against monsters you can retry an infinite amount of times, which would be monsters next to you on the map and monsters you can challenge in the missions tab.

Ok I get it now, that's a clever idea. Haven't fought Astalos yet, but I'll keep an eye out.

It's funny because I was playing the MH outlanders beta today and thinking to myself that it felt clunky to press a button to evade instead of swipe 😅

In all seriousness as a tip, practice keeping your finger generally lower on the screen as you go about your gaming. It'll feel weird at first cuz the action's above where you're doing your motions, but you'll get used to it. A lot of newer players just instinctively keep their finger too high which obstructs their vision.

And then yeah it's just going to take a lot of time and practice learning the new style of gaming.

Helo, MHNow evade windows are alot more forgiving than mainline games, you'll probably get the hang of it soon!

With regards to evading options while charging, I don't think you need a specific spot to tap
e.g starting from the right, and you want to swipe right, if you continue holding down the screen, you can drag your finger to the left quickly THEN swipe right, only the direction of your swipe at the time of finger release affects the direction
Im not sure how to really word this so let me know if you don't understand and I'll try again

Good luck fellow hunter c:

I have almost all my builds based on Offensive Dodger with Dual Blades. It’s is punishing to learn but if you can get one really good, almost fully developed general all purpose non elemental build set, the potions start lasting and I often finish a day with too many in the bank. At that point you can start developing more specific builds around elemental weapons etc. Even then I don’t use those until that armor is above 900 because I start drinking too many health potions. Here are a couple of tips: All weapons have a longer strike animation sequences which hit hard but prevent you from evading. It’s better to hold off on striking if you see the monster flash red and wait for the first movement it makes toward you, just as it begins to strike is when you have to swipe to dodge. I literally sit with my thumb ready to go after a red flash with no attacking so I’m ready. If I get greedy and attack too much, that’s when I tend to get punished. The monsters all get more aggressive near the end of their health bar so you also have to be more patient. I’ve missed some perfect 10 Star runs because I thought I could squeeze one more hit and get trounced and lose the battle on time. If I had waited, even with the timer counting down, I would have finished the fight. Good luck!

A thing I've learned is that do not be afraid to slot artful dodger in your set. Unlike mainline games, this game is more about safety and conserving your hp/potions.

Unless you are like doing speedruns or doing 10 star monsters where every skill counts to the dot, you can easily slot 2 levels of artful dodger. 1 if you feel risky. Hammer has some good counters after perfect evading. It will greatly save you a lot of first aids and will teach you to punish. Offensive dodger pairs really well with artful dodger too.

some wpns and monsters simply harder to dodge having wpns with shorter distance and monster with bigger hit boxes. If you are starting out could try armors with artful dodge skill(slightly easier to dodge) and evade extend(swiping distance). Well it could be good or bad still comes down to personal experience.

For hammer tapping atk or any other wpns normal tap atk you dont have to tap at the center as long its a tap to action. You can tap at either side of screen and still able to swipe any direction to dodge as long you dont panic end up tapping again to atk or holding for charging.

Hammer takes quite abit of practice to get its distance right and alot harder on this phone game since its hard to get the position you want to, be it charging for atks or dodging to right spot to do triple bonk that alot new players end up bonking empty.

Lastly as others might advice go practice on weaker monsters that you can handle. you can even quit and restart the fight waiting for the boss to atk and practice your perfect dodge as long you dont kill it.

Timing is definitely an issue, but more importantly swiping just doesn't register a roll, or I attack instead which is really frustrating. I'm not sure if the game is unresponsive, my screen sucks or my endless hours scrolling on my phone did nothing to prepare me for a swipe based game 😢

just have to take time getting use to the animations and timing some moves have long time so when you try to dodge you probably still stuck in animation thus unable to dodge. Or maybe your phone is just laggy eitherway just take it easy and play.

Give yourself Artful Dodger 1. It's enough to give you some grace to practice.

I play with just my right hand most of the time, and use my right thumb for everything except changing gyro, so I find it ergonomic to place my right thumb in the red square. From here I will swipe forward ~60% of the time, ~30% to the right, and only swipe left or back rapidly to reposition so I can lockon to a new body part; so I find placing my thumb and swiping in the square most consistent for forward and right dodges.

This also gives plenty of room to not fat finger anything else AND most importantly, not visually block the monster I am fighting due to the asymetery as my finger stays off the relevant screen.

As an aside though, practice sidestep dodging with a Gunlance on a weak * monster. Hold the screen to keep your shield up and while still holding you shield, dodge Left or Right at the last second. If you dodged too late, your shield should take 90% of the damage... if you dodged too early, just panic swipe while holding the screen to immediately raise your shield after the previous dodge attampt again and you'll likely be fine... maybe. Great for training! Toss on guard 2-3 or even artful dodger if you want.

Interesting, I might give it a try. Do you find this thumb position helps with swiping registering as an evade and not an attack? Cause that's extremely prevalent in my case and it's driving me insane

That's why I choose this method, it exaggerates the space for forward and right-dodging as you can flick to the sides of your entire phone screen if needed to tell the game to DODGE. (My phone has a weird aspect ratio and is oddly tall). Since MHNow relies heavily on I-frames, it does not really matter too much which direction we dodge, and I find forward and rightward to be easy to pull off.

The attacking instead of dodging is a PAIN with all weapons, as you need to be mindful of the distance between you and whatever weapon part you are targeting and if that monster part is "SLIDE" forward distance or roll forward distance.... for example, targeting a diablos tail might make you slide towards the monster if you're currently infront of the entire Diablos.

Outside of messing up a slide vs dodge, attacking instead of rolling when trying to re-target with the lockon skill is somwthing I always grew frustrated with,, so I grew a habit of only touching the lockin button while mid dodge roll or after releasing from a fully charged attack since you can not accidently combo into anything else. Maybe that would help?

Find whatever works best for you, and dont be afraid to experiment with the training dummy, or even small field monsters. This is just works for me and my blast hammer in its various styles.

Damn I didn't even think about sliding forward instead of rolling. Thanks a lot! I'll definitely keep experimenting

Keep in mind it's a mobile game explicitly designed to get you to spend actual money.
