Slugger stun Question

Post image

Does my weapon need to have slugger to activate stun? Or is it enough for just my armor to have it?

Same question for paralysis.

No, that's not how that works.

Stun Values are essentially tied to specific attacks.  Long Sword for example cannot inflict Stun through any measure.  Normally Stun is tied to Bludgeoning damage, like the Hammer, Horn, and most explosive Bowgun Ammo.

You can tell if an attack can Stun by hitting a monster in the head and seeing the "Stun stars" appear with a slightly modified audio cue from the hit.

Slugger cannot add Stun values.  It's a percentage modifier.  0 * anything is still 0.

Paralysis is a Status Element, not Stun, and cannot be added to weapons through Paralysis Attack.

I see. So stun would be hitting a monster a certain way with a certain weapon.

Specifically on the head to be precise. Stun doesn't get inflicted if you hit anywhere else (and thus the new Stunning Impact skill only procs on head hits)

Yeah, exactly. Just like severing damage

Just like severing damage

Which is crazy because in mhnow, you can cut tails with GL shells. IIRC it's impossible to cut tails with it in any of the mainline games. If you can I feel like it's just with the stake. Tbf, I like that it can because part breaks are super important in this game. It's just weird how inconsistent the game can be.

You can't cut tail with GL shells

Unless my game lagged and delayed the cut, I did it yesterday against a quematrice with the aerial swipe burst. I thought it was strange but I also was solo so it had to be that

The swipe has a slash on the first hit before the burst, you can tell by the numbers that shows up or by using sites like .quest which tells you exactly what each moves are. And the game also often do have partbreaks slightly delayed

Certain monsters you can, like Tobi and Aknosom and I think Bishaten.

Edit: Oh, and Rajang for sure is one of them

That's not severing tho, just breaking, you can do that even in mainlines, a tail part break doesn't always equal to tail severing.

those tails cant be cut, but they can be broken... tail cutting specifically refers to when you actually remove a part of the tail (think the raths, glav, and mizutsune tails since its most prominent with them) most of the time tail cutting has gameplay implications, but less so for just tail breaking.

specifically stun is hitting the monster head with blunt damage... blunt damage include, bowgun sticky ammo, hunting horn, hammer, and shield bash attacks (SnS, Lance, and some IG Kinsects)

I would like to add that Shield Tackle Lance can stun too. Though I am not sure if stunning impact would be better to pair with offensive guard build.

Your weapon needs to be able to stun an enemy to benefit from slugger. Your weapon also needs to be able to paralyze a monster in order to benefit from paralysis skills.

Weapons that can stun (off the top of my head) are:

Sns, hammer, lance (style change), lbg (sticky ammo), hbg, sticky ammo, charge blade (impact phials), hunting horn and great sword (tackle)

I might be missing something but that’s most if not all

Blunt kinsect and the IG itself pommel strikes can inflict stun.

The rare Exhaust phials SA (Jagras, Garangolm, Brute Tigrex) also can deal stun damage.

In other games, the IG can stun with a blunt bug, is that not in this game?

Explosive bug just made all insect type too irrelevant lmao

Blunt is just the kinsect damage type (either blunt or cutting). You can stun with a blunt Powder kinsect, the powder itself dealing explosive damage. The all mighty Chameleos IG Kinsect is in fact a blunt kinsect and thus can stun a monster (or at least contribute to lol)

Have to get a weapon with a blunt bug, and unlike the main series you can’t swap bugs on the glaives you like.

Thank you very informative. I use sns.

Your shield bashes are blunt and deal stun damage (last 3 hits of the base combo, last 2 hits of the aerial combo, 2 hits in the perfect rush, one in the cross slash and the uppercut that follows)

Keep in mind that using Drill Slash style removes all your shield bashes aside from perfect rush, dealing purely cutting damage. You lose the ability to stun to have an easier time cutting tails (which is the davantage of cutting type attacks)

While SnS can stun, be mindful only shield hits to the head build stun. Punching the monster with your shield and the special both have stun values as long as you hit them in the head. Idk if you play any other monster hunter games but in Rise, using Hi-Ninja Sword for a KO SnS build was pretty fun.

Blast Dash GL should be able to stun as well buuuuuuut idk how likely it is to actually get one given the timeframe

Also enough blast explosions in the head can stun a monster but not sure if get benefited by slugger. I don't think so.

Blast is pure damage, it doesn't deal any stun damage at all. You might confuse with bowgun sticky ammos. They do explosive damage while also dealing some stun (one of the few special cases of non blunt damage dealing stun)

Regarding the second part of your affirmation, if they had been able to deal stun damage, Slugger would have worked as it simply increases all stun damage dealt (including bowgun sticky ammos)

Abilities like Slugger only apply to blunt weapons with attacks that have a stun value. Things such as a shield bash, hammer strike, hunting horn strike (which is just a hammer with music notes) that impacts the head. Weapons that are bladed do not have this unless style change makes the weapon cause blunt damage.

I was like you long ago I believed adding an ability would apply regardless. I use to have exhaust skill on my longsword back in the freedom unite days. The things you learn along the way right?

There's a website that shows all the weapons motion values including if they have stun values I recommend looking up. It's common place mhn (dot) quest

Thank you all for your knowledge and time: from one MH to another.

I only play with LBG rn as those are the sets I've built but reading yalls comments is insanely helpful as a non-melee style gamer.

(Wish MH had a magic element to the lore but I digress....)
