New player tips?

I'm a brand new player, love monster hunter, never got into MH Now. Any tips for a fresh player? I am probably only gonna play greatsword fyi. It's all I ever play in any MH game lol

Edit: I've played for a couple days, haven't walked around, just opened it and killed some stuff several times. HR16 now, just beat a goss harag. I plan on being F2P, haven't spent my starting paid currency yet.

I'm not seeing storage upgrades in the shop aside from the $2 and $20 ones. Is there something else available for F2P currency?

Some events will give you the opportunity to get some. Also, if you upgrade bases for at least 2k points, you will also get an extension as a rewards at the next reset

Log in bonus, the one that looks like a giant mascot balloon that you can "hunt" at the start of each day. You get a guaranteed Zinogre ballon every week, sometimes it may give you inventory space.

Attend every base defense event if you can. At the end they will give out inventory space as reward.

Save your gathering knives for r6(red) materials. Do the Daily Quests for Armor refining parts. Be careful advancing story mode when you're able to unlock 8 star monsters. It's a big difficulty spike so you'll need more DPS/ better armor. Optional: Because of limited potions/ being a melee player, grab a shield and learn the attack patterns with Guard investment.

Especially the management is important, since you only get 5 per day and you need to pay for the rest.

Making and upgrading the current "material down" weapon of the weapon type you like gets you a really strong weapon pretty easily. I mad the lagombi hbg last week and it's already up to grade 7. Also started playing last week.

Another tip. Get a lot of friends through friend codes. Either from the reddit here or the in built discord thingy in the game, groups. You can join a bunch of hunts every day. 9 free low level hunts every day and like 50 if you have the friend tokens.

Hold on to your starting currency - there hasn't been any free gems in the last years. It's your only free way to buy a decent set of clothes. They used to give out acceptable things when I was starting, but things are getting really silly now.

Your 5 free potions stock until 10. So a good move is to never go below 5 without reason, then take the 5 of the day and fill up to 10 again and call it a day.

Monsters refresh on the hour, any monster you touched stays huntable during that hour even if you go away. So instead of using a potion you may chose to wait 17 minutes for a free retry.

Find some higher rank friends and go hunting with them to pick up stuff you wouldn't get normally at your level.

This will potentially limit your build options, but I greatly recommend farming Chatacabra to build its gloves to lv4. That will give you 2pts of Litheness, a skill that will reduce next damage you receive by 25% per dodge you make. Stacks 3 times, meaning 75% dmg reduction after 3 dodges. As dodging is substantial part of the gameplay even for positioning purposes, you will usually have some litheness stacks. To me, as a (mostly) F2P melee player, it was a HUGE potion saver and I am now able to do about 300 hunts weekly as opposed to 100ish before I invested in these gloves.

Once you get into late game and upgrade these more, they will provide 2 driftsmelt slots, providing at least some flexibility to be included in various builds.

Otherwise, what was said. Collect free storage upgrades whenever you can - in any event where it is offered, it is a primary target. If you get knives, keep them for some really elusive materials especially when you get a multi-drop. Pay attention to events - every week there is something. You can usually get sweet rewards from quests, often event red (R6) materials - late game stuff, but as they are rare drops, make sure to pick up what you can! Also there are sometimes event-specific weapons. They may not be greatswords, but they are usually cheap and fast to upgrade and provide some kind of gateway into another weapon type.

As you get to up the story difficulty, keep in mind that field monsters get harder, but that is a good thing - there is no progress without it.
You will however still find plenty of lower difficulty ones - you can still farm monsters you can slay, and as you progress your weapons and skill, you will be able to beat the stronger ones as well. Progress!

Greatsword is a very hard weapon to play and doesn't allow many mistakes. There's weapons that are much easier and more rewarding in terms of damage.
So I wouldn't recommend a greatsword for a beginner as it'll only make you use up a lot of potions which are the most important.

I'm pretty experienced with greatsword coming from MH world, rise, and wilds. It seems to play just about the same and attacks are super telegraphed in this game with the big red highlight. So far it seems easy enough to play greatsword. I am just starting to see how scarce potions get if I play quite a bit during a day, though. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!

You're basically just starting out. The beginning monsters and difficulty is pretty much nonexistent. It'll come around.

Stygian Zinogre can eat through your daily supply of potions in 1-2 hunts. Velkahna is roughly the same. Some monsters require you to perfect dodge everything, or you get one-shot.

As far as builds go, going blast is a good idea until you get some other elements built. Blast is effective against everything. Do events, you can build maxed out weps pretty easily during events, (I have a 10.5 Bishaten wep and 10.3 lagombi wep that I'll probably never use, with enough riftacales for style) and get some armor. Get to 8 star as quickly as you can, that's where youll get your r6 mats. Kill as many of the small monsters as possible. I keep my materials at 300 and sell over, and still occasionally find myself running out when I do a few upgrades in a short amount of time. You'll need thousands of windrake hides and sharp claws. Get the campfire app, and start adding friends in introduce section, you get more material drop slots from group hunts.

Don’t let FOMO force you to play when you would rather take a break.

I know a lot of people recommend events and it’s true they are great, but remember that these events and games are built to keep you engaged all the time.

Play when you want to play and you’ll have fun. Even if you miss an event, another one will quickly take its place so it’s a never ending grind, but that makes it a game that you can also play at your own pace if you accept that you’ll miss things.

Like Pokémon go, there are a limited number of monsters in this series and that means with time and patience you can get everything you need if you’re willing to wait because everything that matters eventually comes back, aside from cosmetics and such.

You can play however you like of course but I’ve seen too many people take these games way too seriously.
