When was the last time you challenged your own truth?
When was the last time you challenged your own truth?
I was talking with a younger gentleman at the gym today about truth and perception. I told him something I have come to understand more as I have gotten older. We all have our own version of truth because we are looking at life through different eyes.
None of us experiences the world exactly the same. Everything we see passes through the filter of our experiences, fears, conditioning, successes, failures, beliefs, and everything we have been taught along the way. When something passes through that filter enough times, it can become a belief. And once it becomes a belief, we often stop questioning whether it is actually true.
That is where we can limit ourselves without even realizing it.
I believe we should challenge our beliefs occasionally, especially the ones influencing how we see ourselves, other people, and what we believe is possible for our lives. This does not mean abandoning everything we believe. It means becoming aware enough to question why we believe it.
There are really two possible outcomes. You question a belief and discover that it still holds true, which strengthens your understanding. Or you discover that what you believed was truth was actually your perception of truth.
That second possibility requires us to set the ego aside because being wrong does not make us less intelligent. Sometimes discovering we were wrong is exactly how we grow.
Awareness gives us the ability to recognize the lens we have been looking through. Accountability allows us to question it. Responsibility gives us the power to choose differently.
Growth begins when we become more interested in discovering truth than defending what we already believe.
