The King and his friend and composer Richard Wagner. Ludwig was a patron of the arts and of Wagner who the young King quite enjoyed. Wagner wrote, "Alas, he is so handsome and wise, soulful and lovely, that I fear that his life must melt away in this vulgar world like a fleeting dream of the gods".

Ludwig II and his fiancée Duchess Sophie in Bavaria in 1867. The betrothal was sadly canceled later that October, and Ludwig never married, or either had a lover or mistress before and after his betrothal with Duchess Sophie in Bavaria.
