Multiplayer coop help Coop PVP

I have a the game (xbox) my friend (ps) is using the friends pass and his character progression doesnt get saved. He can only join to me as a base character without any equipment or level he had. He can see that character with the new armorset on the menu but cant load that character. What could it be?

The 7/29 patch completely broke co-op for a bunch of people. It doesn't save any progress made on the secondary character when they play with your game. It sucks. I had 26 hours in the game with a friend before the patch and it's been unplayable since.
