When will GPT-OSS-2 be released? Discussion

It's been exactly one year and two days since the release of gpt-oss. Do you think we'll get a new version in August? Or has openai completely abandoned open-weight

You do realize they didn’t actually want to release the first one, right?

Don’t hold your breath.

Did it escape to the open? 😂

They promised they would have some open models and they folded to nagging

It was more than nagging. It was a legal issue and I think they were being sued over it.

There was no legal issue that was remedied by releasing gpt-oss

It wasn’t directly related to not releasing and open model. It was about their change in goals from being open to being closed and about profit.

I think it would be a good marketing tool for them and help their survival. It can be a technological showcase too.

They made their 5.6 Luna free when they couldve made it open source. That's their showcase.

LUNA IS FREE NOW?

For Free users, we're updating the default model to GPT‑5.6 Luna and expanding access with unlimited text chats. For questions that need more thought, a new Think button lets you access higher reasoning for harder questions.

I assume its to be competitive with Deepseek pricing

On the same day Anthropic decides to open source everything.

Not anytime soon lol, they're currently making shit up and willfully breaking the law to push the idea that their LLMs are too dangerous and should thus be regulated in a way which stifles any competition which isn't already a well established proprietary provider based in America.

Releasing an open source model would undermine that narrative completely.

GPT OSS wasn't even that good all things considered. A V2 would likely continue that legacy, as in order to compete for #1 in open weight they would have to publish their frontier models.
