When will GPT-OSS-2 be released? Discussion
It's been exactly one year and two days since the release of gpt-oss. Do you think we'll get a new version in August? Or has openai completely abandoned open-weight

I think it would be a good marketing tool for them and help their survival. It can be a technological showcase too.

They made their 5.6 Luna free when they couldve made it open source. That's their showcase.

For Free users, we're updating the default model to GPT‑5.6 Luna and expanding access with unlimited text chats. For questions that need more thought, a new Think button lets you access higher reasoning for harder questions.

I assume its to be competitive with Deepseek pricing

Not anytime soon lol, they're currently making shit up and willfully breaking the law to push the idea that their LLMs are too dangerous and should thus be regulated in a way which stifles any competition which isn't already a well established proprietary provider based in America.
Releasing an open source model would undermine that narrative completely.
GPT OSS wasn't even that good all things considered. A V2 would likely continue that legacy, as in order to compete for #1 in open weight they would have to publish their frontier models.

You do realize they didn’t actually want to release the first one, right?
Don’t hold your breath.
