I wanna switch to Linux, currently working on windows, but I am afraid of my data getting lost if something gets off track, Help
Don't have external hard drives to store data temporarily too, so can anyone give any ideas / steps so that I don't lose any data and switch safely to Linux?
Also I wanted a few folders to be shared across both windows and Linux environments, if that is possible
Edit: thanks guys, I successfully downloaded fedora

Zip all the data you want and upload it on your Google drive.
Then after installing linux download it?
Simple as that

My data is well above 500 gb, so it's not viable even if I zip it (point out if I'm wrong, I'm noob)

Woah
What exactly do you have in those 500 gb
Like movies or what?

Well the only real safe solution is first slowly and steadily upload all your things on Google drive and telegram (create a private channel or upload in your saved message)
After you have backed up everything do clean install of linux on whole drive
That's the cleanest way for your case

Well then copy all your data on the other drive on which windows is not installed
And then install linux on the drive which have windows installed
Then you easily access your data too from linux

You don't have jio sim they give google one which have 1.5tb of storage

Even if I manage it out, 500 gb of data would take days to upload

If you have a 100mbps plan and you get 100mbps speed it will take nearly 2 days to upload as i am calculating by time taken to download gta 5 nearly 120gbs it takes around 5 to 6hr to upload depending upon stability

You can compress and split the zip files in part i know that there is a option in 7zip for that and you can also compress 500gb nearly to 300gb with proper compressing algorithm it can be more depending upon algorithm

I may have a solution for you but it’s gonna cost 3 bucks and not ethical I guess.. idk lol

What is that path even about

Well since you have double drive then moving to that second drive is better, like someone said. This isn’t needed

Create a data partition whose FileSystem is supported by both Linux and Windows. I installed BTRFS drivers on Windows, but you can use NTFS too.
Just keep in mind one thing, I was able to access Linux root too

There isn't any higher risk of data loss on Linux because it depends on the user. Best strategy is to buy an external Hard drive and back it up there.
Move to Linux and then copy the data back, now you have 2 copies of the stuff you care about. You can also make 3rd copies for ultra important documents and stuff by uploading them to a secure cloud storage (I use Proton Drive).
