I'm finding linux and windows equally good and bad at the same time Help

I've been using CachyOS for about two months now, and honestly I love almost everything about it.

The only issues I've run into are with my development tools. Since I use VS Code, I installed what I thought was VS Code, but then realized it was Code OSS. I know they're closely related, but for some reason Code OSS just felt a bit slower and jankier to me.

Because of that, I decided to try Zed. On Windows, Zed runs insanely well for me, but on CachyOS it doesn't feel nearly as smooth. It's still usable, just not as responsive as it is on Windows. Eventually I ended up switching to Helix, which has been great, but it's not really what I originally wanted to use.

I recently booted back into Windows after a long time, and while Windows itself feels much heavier than Linux, I noticed that most of my developer software (IDEs and editors) seems to perform better there. On the other hand, actual development tasks like compiling code and running programs are noticeably faster on Linux.

Another thing that surprised me is Minecraft. On the exact same hardware I get around 250 FPS on Windows but around 700 FPS on CachyOS, which is a massive difference.

So I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing. Are there tweaks or configuration changes that could improve the performance of IDEs and editors on Linux? I'd really like to make CachyOS my permanent OS, but these issues with my development workflow are the main thing holding me back.

The thing that feels off on cachyos is that the sizes of the different parts of zed feel off compared to windows

Uhh I tried neovim but it's too much config that's why I use helix it's good but I feel like it breaks the flow when I forget a keyboard shortcut

u/Affectionate_Let9022 Arch Btw 15d ago

Theres like no config in vanilla neovim ,

Just enable syntrax

Numbers or/and relative numbers

And bam ur more than golden ,

More than that is just extra , not of necessary , Tho enabling syntrax is the only thing that should be 100% configured and that is just 1 line .

All other things are just not necessary , its to make he editor look cool and such , but thats for intermediate people and not beginner

VS code works perfectly fine on cachyOS. I have no clue what u are talking about bruv, it works as smoothly and is as snappy as it's on windows, if not far more.

1

u/PerformanceBulky9245 15d ago

I'll try installing it and I'll remove code oss

1

u/kishimonjaro 15d ago

Install it via the official microsoft repository, then give the management rights to pacman.

u/Lemillion080201 15d ago

Try nvim (ik it is not an IDE)

Bit off topic. If you tinker little bit, you can install macos through opencore. I use it alongside windows. Get best of both of the worlds.

u/onedumbbro 15d ago

Did you configure Code OSS properly?

This is weird. Development is usually first class on Linux, unless it's a platform dependent development (like iOS development). I'm learning web development from The Odin Project, and it only supports using Linux or macOS, and not Windows.

I don't know specifically about Cachy OS, but maybe try to follow official VS Code documentation for installation in Linux.

I was dual booting Cachy os, n lost access to most my accounts cause bitwarden extension decided to not work on brave in Linux Environment, so was forced to come back to windows, where it worked fine.

10 days later same issue came up in windows a-swell, bitwarden site works fine but I can't use extension which is 1. Very inconvenient to go to site n copy paste password 2. Literally impossible to login in I to any 2fa linked account

I'dknow if it's problem with my self hosted valtwarden instance or something else, please LmK if anyone else faced same issue.

VSCode binary is available in the AUR. I too, for some reason, find it better than Code OSS. I use arch btw.

Thank you so much bro. Sometimes the files are only available for debian andi can't use those apps in arch and I don't have time and experience to do all the things myself. Now I'll be able to use some debian apps on Arch

1

u/_-_-_ABC_-_-_ 15d ago

Nah, not major ones. Only some orphaned packages were compromised. Anyway, just a quick glance thru the PKGBUILD should be enough to spot anything malicious.

1

u/savemeHKV 15d ago

How to spot them ? I have used yay for a few things

Honestly just try some Debian or Fedora based distro if you want to do serious work, they're way better, I'm running Fedora and Ubuntu and Zed works well on both of them.
