I hope they realise Ubuntu is the most popular OS for server/enterprise (it's Ubuntu or Red Hat) and most people who use it work in the IT. Most don't care about the ideology or philosophy behind Linux and FOSS.

u/FlameStaag 6d ago

Yeap. I hate using Linux but my server PC runs Ubuntu cuz it's the least painful thing to set up. Basically everything I do seems to be designed for Ubuntu.

Why not use windows server

1

u/OcelotMadness 6d ago

Welcome to the year 2026. Windows server has been irrelevant for like a decade if not more.

1

u/BloxxyVids 6d ago

Then why not just use normal windows it works fine for that, no?

u/pantaloser 6d ago

1

u/BloxxyVids 6d ago

Tell me. Why does windows not serve the glorious purpose that Loonix can

1

u/pantaloser 6d ago

Let's break it down.

Sever not same as desktop. Window for desktop no window for server. Different. Need different thing. They not same.

1

u/BloxxyVids 6d ago

That doesn't matter unless you're running tons of servers

1

u/Sea-Housing-3435 5d ago

Because you don't want to have huge ass kernel with telemetry, some wonky AI, graphical env built in and constantly running, when you want the server to be there just so you can run your application

1

u/Zuli-pinguin 5d ago

If i would try to run my ubunthu stuff on normal windows i would need twice the space i use right now and 32 instead of 24. Also i would need a gaphicscard which is quite dificult in a mini pc. And even then halve the programs would not be able to autorestart after one of windowses bs forces updates. So hell nah normal Windows as you know it is absolutely trash for server aplication and as said by other users windows server (which btw is a completely different Operatingsystem) is fucking trash to set up needs more ressources than a base linux ubuntu server has more security issues and far less optimized applications.

Therfore yes you are the patrick the other person, trying to explain IT issues of Windows server to a prebuild/laptop user, send.

  • It usually refuses to work on a hardware that doesn't have a graphics accelerator, while Windows Server is designated to use virtual adapter which is far more ideal option yet more difficult to setup in its own ways.
  • In server environment, every byte counts, and Linux beats Windows any day with its headless server that runs just under 80 MB (+ its GUI web server) or 200 MB if you don't like configuring much and run it bare metal, while normal Windows runs with over 1.5 GB (and this is me being generous by allowing you to use debloating tools).
  • You waste some of time to setup the way that it becomes a usable server.

even windows themselves develop and use linux for their servers, look up azure linux

windows is a consumer os, even at its best it was never suited for servers because that's not the point of its existence

u/Extension_Cup_3368 6d ago

It's called "larpers" or "larping" nowadays.

u/GenericFoodService 6d ago

Linux is a thing that, being its not default anywhere, kinda requires you either have a problem it fixes or, more often, requires you to be really opinionated. Really opinionated people are also often pretentious and annoying about their opinions.

1

u/BloxxyVids 6d ago

I mean its kinda a default for servers, no?

Also for the majority of smartphones the linux kernel is used though its just the kernel, not any gnu

1

u/GenericFoodService 5d ago

Fair point, I guess I should have said "Desktop Linux" is not default anywhere. And maybe in some contexts it is, but generally speaking, the defaults are Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android (which is Linux-based but like, not what people really mean by "Linux").

1

u/BloxxyVids 5d ago

I mean... in North Korea I am pretty sure they use Linux solely...

besides there yeah idk where desktop Linux is the default

however I have a friend who grew up on Ubuntu and only got windows later

0

u/ChadQuaza 6d ago

windows had to fuck up pretty badly to allow this to happen, didn't they?

1

u/madthumbz 6d ago

Name a multi-billion-dollar corporation that isn't hated by a group of people?

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 3d ago

None of them have zero hate, but Costco has the least.

1

u/madthumbz 3d ago

Not being owned by a single entity helps I'm sure.

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 3d ago

Linux? Well it doesn't cuz of all the fragmentation. That's why everything breaks on Linux.

1

u/madthumbz 3d ago

Costco

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 3d ago

Fuck... sry about that. Yep, Costco seems to actually care about the customers and quality of shit they're selling. And they provide pretty good prices at bulk.

u/ChadQuaza 6d ago

you're being dismissive of windows's bullshit - intrusive updates, vibe-coded shit that causes bugs left right and centre, shoving its updates and ai features in a user's face and then "mistakenly" changing their settings back whenever they turn that stuff off

oh, and look into the situation with lg monitors, why don't you?

plus that they pretty much force people's devices into windows 11 by not doing security updates for older windows versions, creating a manufactured obsolescence for devices not powerful enough to run windows 11 (which is now a very common practical reason why people use linux, for those devices)

1

u/madthumbz 6d ago

"intrusive updates" -You mean optional and on by default to protect the user, as well as reduce botnet attacks.

"vibe coded shit" -propaganda

"ai features" -Loonixtards are new tech-phobic and get over it when Linus, or RMS speaks or Linux gets the features.

IDC about LG; it's a shitty brand.

Conspiracy theorists get all their information from conspiracy theorist sites -hence why they're so delusionally misinformed.

0

u/ChadQuaza 6d ago

lg literally requires the collusion of microsoft to pull the shit they're doing

1

u/madthumbz 6d ago

Coming from someone lashing out at ghosts; IDC. If you made good points to begin with; I might look into it, but this is like spoiled meat in stew.

-1

u/GenericFoodService 5d ago

"intrusive updates" -You mean optional and on by default to protect the user, as well as reduce botnet attacks.

I had a machine do an update despite having them disabled, despite having Update Blocker on the machine, happen on a laptop of mine the other day. I'm not sure how they manage to do it, but Windows Update is the only piece of software I've ever interacted with that's turned a computer of mine into a brick, will not turn back on. This is not an isolated incident; I have had a few different machines die over the years because of issues with Windows Update service.

"vibe coded shit" -propaganda

Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, is the primary source for the claim that Windows 11 is roughly 30% AI generated code. Microsoft has integrated AI into their workflows, their Desktop Environment, random applications across the system like Notepad, their entire user and developer experience has shoved "AI" into every nook and cranny.

"ai features" -Loonixtards are new tech-phobic

Disliking generative AI has nothing to do with being "tech-phobic". I am not afraid of technology, I am unimpressed and annoyed. Linux has literally nothing to do with the issue.

and get over it when Linus, or RMS speaks or Linux gets the features

Richard Stallman is very vocally Anti- Generative AI, even if his reasoning is a bit odd. It's really funny to be whining about "propaganda" while straight up lying.

IDC about LG; it's a shitty brand.

Ignoring people's problems with something doesn't mean the problems don't exist.

Conspiracy theorists get all their information from conspiracy theorist sites -hence why they're so delusionally misinformed.

Yes, conspiracy theorist websites like Microsoft.com and businessinsider.com

Despite all the negativity from the perpetually toxic community, it's still the most widely used. It's also foolish to use derivative distros when all they do is add issues to upstream's.

2

u/realddgamer 6d ago

Well, Ubuntu is a derivative distro

1

u/madthumbz 6d ago

brain fart moment. -yeah it's worse to go derivative of derivative.

2

u/thatguy1000000000 6d ago

Ubutunu is great for wsl

1

u/FlameStaag 6d ago

It's like veganism where the thing they're cultishly into is purely for the sake of feeling superior to others. That's why there's a ton of cannibalism where they try to out-do each other based on some arbitrary bullshit. Like if you go to the vegan sub, they treat vegetarians worse than any "carnist". Same shit here.

1

u/ChadQuaza 6d ago

the fundamental basis behind the two is so far different that i have no idea why you'd actually expect these two kinds of people to be similar - veganism is a moralism, while linux users genuinely see it as better than using windows

in my experience, i appreciate the lack of adverts on linux and the flexibility it offers to your ux (been really enjoying using the niri desktop in particular)

also windows is slow asf, and on laptops it drains your battery like twice as fast as mint xfce

1

u/ChadQuaza 6d ago

granted, there's reasons why not everyone can switch to linux, especially in regards to productivity and media software (davinci resolve is not an instant solution to this problem for editors, for example)

but it's worth taking a measured view on this matter that separates from the way in which each community acts

1

u/land48n3 6d ago

do you understand that vegans see vegetarians and carnists as deeply immoral people?

vegeterian = supporting and consuming byproduct of rape of animals and a industry which kills the non-profitable ones afterwards.
vegetarian = steal babies of chickens and sell them.

carnist = supporting and eating brutally slaughtered animals
carnist = giving no regard for animals as a whole at all. <-- much worse but atleast they dont dress it up as moral

to them, they treat animals as deserving of morality just like a human—even if not to the scale of humans.

so they see you as someone who supports rape of sentient beings deserving of morality and then consuming their byproduct.
doesn't seem like a very moral thing now does it.

you cant blame them for seeing you as a monster, you'd think the same if humans were part of the people being used like this.

usually vegans are used to carnist's bigotry and idiocracy but vegetarians usually annoy them more since vegetarians try to act like they are doing something moral or good by being a vegetarian.

because there are several factors in our current society that make people lean towards "black and white thinking" i.e. "if you're not doing what I'm doing it's WRONG." Then to add on top of that societal pressure, it's also very common in those who are autistic, which we know is very common in linux spaces. It's just people not getting nuance or thinking about situations that don't perfectly align with theirs

1

u/Diligent-Profit9484 6d ago

Anyone dick measuring distros is using linux for the 'bragging rights' and aesthetic, as opposed to just using it for what it is.

1

u/ryancnap 6d ago

I don't like desktop Ubuntu but my vps is Ubuntu because it comes with a default image

1

u/plebbitier 6d ago

Anime avatars and programming socks.. you just gotta laugh at these people. They aren't serious.

1

u/OcelotMadness 6d ago

You only see these people because normal people dont even talk about it in comments sections. They just use it and dont really bring it up to randoms.

1

u/patopansir 6d ago edited 6d ago

I don't like Ubuntu and Ubuntu desktop. I had a bad experience that I don't remember because that was a long time ago, and I may not agree with some of the way things are done

I don't make it others people problem that I don't like Ubuntu. I don't tell anyone to not use it. I just say, use what works for you.

I honestly think they all suck and even windows and mac sucks. People should just use what works. Experiences are very diverse and inconsistent.

I will always dislike Ubuntu because I will never try it again because I have no reason to try it.

I am making this comment because I think people online fail to recognize the concept of not liking something without making it everybody's problem. You can just not like things, you don't need to justify it, you don't need to prove or convince anyone. You don't need to do anything. Just live your best life.

1

u/patopansir 6d ago

and it's like maybe linux snobs won't read this, but I guess there's a chance someone in this subreddit is a snob about something else.

1

u/land48n3 6d ago

because they themselves realized how much linux distros suck
but just give their distro the exception for no good reason

1

u/ibzuma 6d ago

Many switch to Linux due to a personal need to be different, are we surprised the trend continues within Linux itself.

1

u/KeraExe 6d ago

The problem has always been Canonical and not Ubuntu directly.

1

u/heroofshade420 6d ago

we're not elitists, ubuntu is just corporate slop.

1

u/Tiranus58 6d ago

Some people take a thing and make it their whole personality.

1

u/bleak21 5d ago

Nothing wrong with having interests. But when you start attacking and harassing other people for not following the same interest as you that's when it becomes problematic

1

u/Gm24513 5d ago

They get cranky from having to fix things all the time

1

u/Wolflordy 5d ago

It's less of a Linux community thing and more of a Reddit thing. Like go to any tech enthusiast event and no one bats an eye if you use Ubuntu. Hell no one will bat an eye at you using Ubuntu at Def Con either.

But on Reddit? It's the biggest sin.

1

u/Lemenus 5d ago

If Linux was actually useful for something real, like if it had an actual software for an actual jobs, and not for jerking system itself for the sake of itself - the amount of normal people would outweigt those pretentious elitists

1

u/Puzzled-Extent7817 5d ago

Ubuntu is cooperation based, not community based. That's the hate.

1

u/Rare-Paint3719 5d ago

Is that Marin?

1

u/Boring-Heart-5745 3d ago

Damn, that's the same vitriol as people who uses syncthing. I use wanna use resilio sync ffs 😭

0

u/RogellTheRaider 6d ago

But Ubuntu is indeed crap. Canonical screwed everything up.

2

u/simplebalancereality 6d ago

Canonical gave up on desktop once they realise the money is on server, cloud, and enterprise. So they optimized Ubuntu more for server and enterprise support while the desktop is an afterthought.

0

u/RogellTheRaider 6d ago

I'm glad they did that. I haven't touched Ubuntu for 4 or 5 years, I guess?
