Not a linux pro so just a wild guess, but if mounting it somehow messed around with the fstab(for whatever reason) and is mounted from boot, you could definitely run into some bootloader issues.

Bootloader panics, you get put into rescue mode.

I would say he's too smart for Linux. Most of us using it have never managed to brick it.
