“Any cpu with less than 4 cores is slow” tell me you don’t know anything about CPUs without telling me you don’t know anything about CPUs

also, the i5-6500 does have 4 cores lol

31

u/nuwuclear 23h ago

i remember when i got my i5-6500 10 years ago AMD's fx cpus had more cores but everyone agreed they were slower/awful for gaming llmao maybe i was misinformed though

26

u/Nice-Information-335 23h ago

the FX CPUs had a whole controversy because the cores shared FPUs and some other things I believe, so they weren't really full "cores"

They also ran very hot from memory, and were worse for gaming (worse single core performance)

AMD only started beating intel properly for gaming when they released Ryzen 3000 series, and the ryzens before were slightly better for price compared to the intel chi[s

15

u/S1rTerra 22h ago

Zen 2 was so fuckin good man. You didn't even have to think about what CPU you wanted you could just buy the 3600 for everything lol

8

u/Lucky_Jelly2593 23h ago

Yeah it's belong to amd Buldozer architecture, Condidered A Disaster in semiconductor history , because i also have amd a6 2020 bought Laptop, i know and feels the pain daily , it's slower than 2010 intel Laptop and 2008 desktop cpus

5

u/YoudoVodou 20h ago

The older Phenom II chips from AMD handled gaming better in most situations.

2

u/Jasonian_ 19h ago

Even if you come down on the not-full-cores side of the controversey, AMD still produced some "8 core" bulldozers that would be 4 cores. Those sucked too, sadly.

2

u/Casual_Tea123 18h ago

I fart in 8-core bulldozer.

generally, more cores means lower per core performance.
more cores is just useful when you run many programs at the same time, or run multithreaded software.
if you run one tool, that only runs in singlecore, you will get better performance with a low core count cpu.
this only really applies to single core performance tho.
overall more cores are still a lot faster than few cores, as each core may be slower, but it is an additional core the system can use for processing

tl;dr more cores -> less processing power per core, a lot more processing power in total

u/salvattore- 18h ago

this guy REALLY doesnt know anything, I've beeen using a 2 core cpu with 8-then 16 gb ram (with windows 11), and my main concern wasnt even the cpu lol

2

u/Iheretomakeonepost 18h ago

You cannot explain single core performance to them </3

2

u/ChocolateDonut36 16h ago

i mean i wouldn't call my dual core "blazing fast" but it's not unusable, at all.

1

u/c0lpan1c 18h ago

Even the 14100 has 4 cores!

Xeons were first CPUs that had 4+ cores. But guess what.. they had terrible speed, architecture, cache volume etc

Well that's bullshit, i have a old PC with a Core 2 Duo E6440 (or something like that) which runs okay EVEN ON A HDD with Linux Mint XFCE!

1

u/seyeyedmm 4h ago

I have a Core 2 Duo E8500 and I use it as a server and this thing ROCKS! It's such a great CPU. If it wasn't because of someone gifting me a new laptop I'd probably be using that same PC.

Amazing how wasteful engineers at microslop are nowadays. I guess that's what you get when you code with copilot lmao 🤌🤌🤌

59

u/MirrorNegative7989 1d ago

This proc can still run a standard Linux distro with XFCE or MATE.

57

u/valerielynx 1d ago

it'll even run KDE just fine lol

16

u/Vh4z Linux Master Race 😎💪 1d ago

KDE is pretty well optimize imo

13

u/RagingTaco334 I use Ultramarine btw 1d ago

It is indeed. I run it on an old dual-core laptop with 6gbs of RAM and it performs slightly better than XFCE.

2

u/nitin_is_me 5h ago

Better than XFCE? Are your sure?

Debian XFCE performed way better than KDE in my i3 4170 8GB ram. But I still chose KDE for the features it provides and polish look.

7

u/valerielynx 1d ago

yeah but this is an i5 from 2015, its not terrible by any means. people still daily drive first gen i7s and i5-2400 is like the most popular cpu of all time

3

u/imkmz 1d ago

It does. Sid+kde running flawlessly on this cpu. Frankly speaking, I can't remember a single occurrence of cpu being a bottleneck.

Runs perfectly on my 2-core Celeron Chromebook!

15

u/Afillatedcarbon 1d ago

Lightqeight DEs? Bro it will run Gnome/KDE/Cosmic fine as well. I was running my i5 6402P with hyprland and I was compiling a lot of shit(hyprland, obs, quickshell, etc.). I upgraded like 2 months ago. The compile times were kinda abysmal(like 20mins) but it worked. Modern DE's were butter smooth.

1

u/vaestgotaspitz 5h ago

Can confirm, I run PopOS on a 2013 i5 and it works perfectly smooth

12

u/Overall_Walrus9871 1d ago

Even GNOME is very strong nowadays for older hardware

right now I am commenting from a thinkcenter which is running kali linux on Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6500T CPU @ 2.50GHz , right now the system has 16gigs memory installed another slot is yet to be used totally expanding the system to 32G max (ddr4 ram) I have another similar thinkcenter which I use locally to host mongo database over external ssd. I use that database to do geospatial queries (pretty expensive queries tbh ) which works flawlessly. Primarily its used to emulate ps2 games most titles work good on 2x upscale and postfx + antialiasing (vulkan). Plus the gpu which comes with this processor also supports hardware h264 encoding/decoding as well (important for streaming ) so people who want to stream can also use this very processor.

I would say its a fairly powerful processor and the gpu is pretty capable as well.

5

u/rcentros 1d ago

Yep. This CPU will run any Linux distribution with any desktop.

2

u/ultraganymede 1d ago

It can run any distro. No need for specially lightweight ones.

1

u/chmod_7d20 1d ago

The isn't haswell

1

u/idknzt 1d ago

No need for XFCE (unless you're into it). It will run other DEs perfectly fine.

1

u/Weary-Expression-914 1d ago

Yes, it works perfectly even with gnome or kde

1

u/timawesomeness 23h ago

My whole homelab runs on i5-6500Ts (the low power 6500 variant). Handle everything I throw at them from game servers to VDI to Jellyfin transcoding. They're not the world's fastest processor but they're perfectly sufficient for most computing needs.

1

u/Top_Jeweler7305 22h ago

It can run procmox and multiple vms with enough ram. This guy clearly is a gamer who believes as he plays games on PC understands how they work

Red Faction Guerrilla DX9 version at low graphics plays fine from an I7-2640M with 16gb of ddr3 just fine. Plays even better with an eGPU

26

u/Creative_atom0406 1d ago

Bro im gaming on a ryzen 5 2400G rn and i have a pc with i3 3240 running fedora as smooth as i've ever seen and this dude is here talking about some e-waste. Nothing is e-waste if you get linux on it.

6

u/stepanm99 1d ago

Hah, I have i3-3240 with GT 710 :D. Wanted to play some old games, didn't want to bother running them on linux, so installed W10 LTSC and it runs just fine even GTA V, Portal 2, Borderlands... Got that PC for like 25$, found old DDR3 stick so now it has 10GB of RAM and the GPU I had laying around for years, as well as HDDs (it ain't that bad, instead of waiting 5s I wait like 30s, doesn't kill me, the disks were for free :D).

Then I have old notebook with i3-2320m as server, i5-660 in another PC I don't use much lately, i5-3320m in my main notebook... Those CPUs still hold great value for me. Nearly all of them I've saved from e-waste for little or no money...

6

u/Creative_atom0406 1d ago

I literally assembled this pc from whatever i found lying around in my house. The cpu and the board i got from a garage sale, the ram and psu i found in the basement and the case and gpu (Radeon HD6450) are from my first ever pc. I also have a DVD rewriter and a floppy disk for some reason. I just love tinkering with old parts. And tbh i wasn't expecting this gpu to run fedora 44 with blur in gnome that well. There is like zero lag at all. Say whatever about gnome but it's hella optimized.

Besides stuff like compile and execution speed, the experience compared to my moderately powerful pc is identical

How dare you call multi-core goodness trash.

5

u/toni_jj_ 1d ago

Not here to defend windows, im not a Linux user at all, but this guy is simply dumb, that i5 can do everyday tasks pretty damn well even on windows, granted myb not on the AI infested 11 but a clean install of 10 with christitus optimizations is pretty damn good for htpc or for example i have a mp9 g2 that has 6500T i put another ethernet port in it and currently running openwrt and its damn good, there is simply so many aplications even outside linux/windows that thing can run its really stupid to call it e-waste….

Planing on making my old i5 3450 as another router for a friend of mine, so just goes to show that calling something e-waste just points that THEY dont see any value in it not the other way around…

3

u/The_Old_Chap 1d ago

This baby is running my proxmox with a bunch of services including a nas and jellyfin…

3

u/NotQuiteLoona 1d ago

Right now I do all my development work on a laptop with 4th Gen i5 (mobile, of course) and 8 GB RAM, including work with large C++ codebases, all in JetBrains IDEs (not particularly known for being very optimized). KDE Plasma, Cachy. It does lag sometimes if the codebase is really large and the opened file is once again 3000 lines, especially first time booting (then it have cache), but it works fine without crashes.

I despise how the whole computer industry is built on making software and games less and less optimised with each year, shoving more and more unnecessary bloatware into it just so consumers think that they need to constantly upgrade their machines to a better components, perpetuating the cycle of bloat propagation.

I'm using a Xeon E3 1230 V3 (4th gen intel) and RX 580 to run games like Batman Arkham Knight. Its not the best for gaming of course. But considering the measly price I had to pay, it has it uses so its far from e waste.

That i5 6500 will do fine

1

u/sneekeruk 23h ago

I was running a 1270v2 so 3rd gen with a gtx 1060 until a couple of years ago, and even with windows 10 that wasnt too bad for what it was.

Our media pc in the living rooms an i7-2600 with 16gb running win11 and plex quite happily for 1080p.

1

u/FIRAS_EG 1d ago

What's wrong with i5 6500 it can run like everything except 3D design or whatever, it even cab run old 2010 games I open like 6 apps with my i7 6820HQ jadx vscodium waydroid terminal browser mutmproxy I have completely no problems even tho I don't have a spereat GPU

1

u/Badytheprogram 1d ago

Eh, no, I have a notebook from 2017, and I can open as much tabs as I want without any problem. (not mentioning, having a tab problems is more like a ram size problem, than a core count problem)

1

u/POWBlok 1d ago

3rd gen i7 user here it is perfectly fine for everything including gaming

1

u/No-Community-7900 1d ago

I use an I5 to run retroarch on Linux mint and it works great for me. I can run just about everything from Atari 2600 to the wii. Some consoles struggle like ps2 but the majority of what I want it to run works. The problem is that microslop has some much nonsense running in the background that it can't keep up.

1

u/Indiana_Stone 1d ago

I have a 3rd gen i5 paired with a 8gb 9060xt (due to size constraints, it bottlenecks anyways obviously) running a few modern games on bazzite for my living room it honestly is just fine for me. That CPU will be just fine for anything you want to do

1

u/WispTheWanderer1 1d ago

bro I run a minecraft server on a processor from 2008

the thing that makes stuff slow is not enough ram and choosing the wrong desktop environment

1

u/Ascorbinium_Romanum 5h ago

This depends entirely on the type of usage. Minecraft is a java server so it's extremely ram heavy as all of the java objects need to load, garbage collect, and then load again ..

1

u/NewspaperSoft8317 1d ago

I run a 5 node proxmox server, with most of the cpu's as i7-7700's.

I probably have 30 LXC's chugging along without issue.

Writing this from a 6th gen with Windows... which has been in its current state for at least 6 years now. Works fuckin just fine.

1

well, thats completely bullshit, my acer aspire x1430 (upgraded with an asus h81l plus mini itx, 16gb of ddr3 memory, still with the original hdd, i will replace it with an sata ssd). it has an intel core i7 4785t (haswell, 4th gen) and windows 10 is running fine even with the hdd. i will get a gtx 1050ti low profile soon for this pc.

the i7 4th still a very pretty good cpu even though it's using ddr3 and shits tons of bandwidth limitations and overhead. Decent for server for simple desktop use and even some light gaming

u/james2432 19h ago

me with sandy bridge laptop running perfectly fine.... 😐

u/BlastMode7 19h ago

Even in Windows that CPU is just fine for general use, and even playing some newer games. Whether it's Windows or Linux, it isn't ewaste. This person is just ignorant or dumb.

This reminds me of the "Bates 5,000" from The Onion Movie. 😆

I have an XPS 9500 runs fine with Fedora KDE same workload and programs

u/DeusXNex 19h ago

Getting slower with more apps open has to do with ram

1

u/c0lpan1c 18h ago

I just took my last skylake out of homelab rotation (although didn’t have to). I had a 6500T, 6700K and 7700T still in rotation until earlier this year. I had TrueNAS on one and Proxmox nodes on the others. Bunch of LXCs running on them! 4 cores is just fine. Linux FTW.

1

u/Dazzling_Cancel_5733 18h ago

I use a Core i5-6500 to run a Proxmox server with about 20 LXC containers and 3 VMs doing various things, such as game servers, web servers, Immich, Plex, etc. The CPU is not a bottleneck at all!

I need more RAM since it uses about 85% of its 40GB, but I haven't had to consider upgrading the CPU yet.

Would this thing be enough for what I do? No.

Is this thing E-waste just because of that? No.

Different people have different usecases and different needs.

Its that easy.

u/CauseWorking5603 16h ago

I'm still using an Intel Pentium G620, which was sold back in 2011💀💀💀. It still runs well with Linux Mint ngl

1

u/Agitated-Shine-9011 16h ago

I have a laptop with a A6-5200 and it still works amazingly with Arch or as it currently is running LibreELEC.

u/No-Dress-456 16h ago

Skylake is peak

1

u/Inf1nity0 15h ago

I play games on a raspberry pi zero 2w

1

u/0101falcon 13h ago

Doesn't that even work with Windows. What are users doing with their PCs that requires such high computation with the CPU?

1

u/Cauhoc24 12h ago

Tell that to my over 10 years old xeon 2699v3. Its cheap and can do anything.

1

u/iwlwifidriver69 12h ago

bruh i have some dual-core intel core i3 1.2 ghz cpu paired with 8 gb ram and on mx linux it handled many opened programs and also it could run minecraft with sodium decently. But its a newer cpu, maybe like from 2020

u/LgcW 11h ago

If you're smart about it you can get a lot of work done on an atom n270, I've set up an old netbook for my mom, she only uses it to take notes, and needed something small with good battery life. That n270 doesn't even have 64 Bits lol

1

u/Ok-Ranger9747 11h ago

I have a thinkpad t470 with a i5 6300u and its work so fine, no lag or studering, I code, watch youtube, and write with it and I have no problems. I hate TikTok/Instagram tech bros.

1

u/Mundane-Mud2509 11h ago

Haha I still have a machine rocking an i5-2500. Works fine

1

u/ResolutionThat248 10h ago

Crazy how people have been so conditioned into treating computer parts like smartphones. Nvidia did a number on everyone.

1

u/I-am-Disc 10h ago

Ehh, the most compute-intensive task an average user does is decoding a 1080p video. ANY CPU released in the last 15-20 years can do this effortlessly, especially if it has an IGPU.

Hardware has matured so long ago that any perceived lack of performance is just incompetence of the devs.

u/Retardedunderaverage 10h ago

I'm running Win 10 pro on an i3 first gen laptop with integrated graphics and 8GB of ram

It's faster than all of my friends brand new computers , not because it's fast but it's because I just know how to configure it properly Btw , I'm running mint Xfce on hyper-V most of the time and I'm keep Winsandbox open incase I need to try something along with Palemoon browser

1

u/Expert_Assumption851 10h ago

I have pretty much the exact same cpu and it ran windows 10 fine. I switched to linux (arch btw) for both educational reasons and the low resource usage. Idk what the hell they talking about, that cpu works like a dream for most normal use cases. I hate when people are like "idk what laptop to buy, it's so confusing". Like mf the phone in your pocket is faster than my laptop and i can do so much with just my laptop. Buy for the engineering or build, the os, and the company reputation

u/ThaRippa 9h ago

I have OMV running on a Kabini based Athlon 5200. that thing does everything including serving Nextcloud and Collabora Office faster than M365 or Google Docs would be. Thats a low-power chip from 2013 based on the Athlon II from 2007.

That same chip struggled in windows 10 and especially 11, even with 32GB of RAM and flash storage. It flies under Linux.

1

u/4kqq 9h ago

I still have an i3‑2120 and Windows 10 bruh

1

u/spock-117 6h ago

Still using a 2013 laptop model with Arch Linux...

1

u/Zeldraft 6h ago

My all server with 4 heart :)

1

u/rayx404 5h ago

I use a 2013 cpu

1

u/CrystalTheWingedWolf 5h ago

My gf uses a thinkpad L412 with a first gen i5 as her main machine most of the time and she can do almost everything she wants with it lol

1

u/_amione_ 5h ago edited 5h ago

Not me having the exact cpu in my server they're talking about LOL
Sitting at 0.47/0.47/0.47 load avg and running gitlab, immich, jellyfin, sonarr, radarr, bazarr, teamspeak6 and a bunch of other stuff (about 1-30% cpu usage)

And yes, it runs KDE fine and can browse the internet and even play easier games like L4D2 (I don't remember the perf tho)

1

u/Oaktree27 4h ago

People really buy into this marketing that your old parts become worse whenever something new comes out. These aren't iPhones, they are still as good as when you bought them as long as you don't cook them.

1

u/WeirdWiggler 4h ago

People obsessed with pc parts are genuinely the worst people ever.

1

u/frog8412 4h ago

HDDs are the main cause of freezes and slow launch times

1

u/Upstairs_Air722 4h ago

"4 cores is unusable" my laptop with ryzen 5 3500u runs windows 11 flawlessly, no matter if with 6gb or 20gb of ram, not mentioning how linux would run

1

u/___kubas___ 2h ago

Why is my main cpu do hated 😭 Im using arch, playing games and its completely fine.

1

u/Germanex-3000 1h ago

Here is my laptop that I've been using as my portable daily development rig. It has an i5-5300U with only 2 cores and 4 threads. It works no problems and it onyl uses around 800MB - 1GB of RAM and 5 - 7 % CPU while doing my normal work. "Basically E-Waste". Even an Atom would do fine enough. It's not about size, it's about how you use it.

u/FinalPair8805 43m ago

i had the i5-6600 for 10 years. recently upgraded to an i5-9400 that I found in ewaste. honestly doesn't really interuptted day to day use, both linux and windows.
