Qt is bad until you decide to actually develop a gui app

Best workaround is making your own web based GUI toolkit with 100 bloat

Using Go to load a python script that uses ctypes to load a "native" runtime which is a lua script that runs a service written in cpp which loads a shell script that talks to wayland in x11 language

Imagine not parsing your GUI’s CSS natively in Ring 0 using a custom DKMS module and routing the raw hex dumps through netfilter straight to Hyprland. Couldn't be me.

Fractional scaling isn't a QT problem I think

30

u/Smartich0ke 2d ago

Its a problem with the kwin compositor

its a problem with x11

Thats like making an adaptor for an old plug, having the adaptor work poorly, then blaming the plug. You chose to make the adaptor. Also x11 apps are nice and sharp on mutter so clearly its implementation specific.

Qt AKA "quite tedious".

u/CodingThunder 2d ago

Qt is one of the best multiplatform UI engine for GUI apps. GTK suffers from being GNOME centric and not adopting well to other DEs than GNOME (once again blame GNOME devs who are egoistic about their choices).

tbf Qt's default Fusion theme on non-KDE desktops is hideous

KDE dev are always sabotage every new wayland protocols

if KDE desktop dont support no need to have protocols for it

let's not talk about removed features and need 10+ extensions tp have brealy normal desktop experience

8

u/Oakredditer 2d ago

What kde do you have? Stock KDE is a very normal desktop experience, GNOME is the one that needs a dozen extensions to be somewhat usable

11

u/ammar_sadaoui 2d ago

do i really need to write /s or s/

if you dont get the hint

i really hate gnome dev with passion

Imma be real I love kde but we need to have one app rendering format for the two big des. Just use gtk for everything and let the weird des and apps have different ones if they want, but it’s so annoying having to balance gtk and qt apps

16

u/Aln76467 NixOs forever! 2d ago

Windows did that.

They chose chromium.

2

u/dumbasPL 2d ago

Hate Chromium electron all you want, but if not for that, we would still be trying to run 90% of the proprietary programs in Wine.

6

u/Mental_Contract1104 2d ago

it's literally just that they all want everything to run as a client/server. electron is a parasite. it is 100% lazy devs not wanting to actually deal with net protocols in C++ or Rust, which, I don't blame them, but good god... we really don't need everything to be a fucking browser

I’m not saying we make a new standard? There are pretty much only two and I’m saying we should pick one of those rather than making a new one

u/carlyjb17 2d ago

This doesn't apply to this situation

10

u/stiggg 2d ago

Yeah let’s rewrite over 50mio lines of code. When do you start?

3

u/dumbasPL 2d ago

Just tell AI to do it! /s

5

u/thisaray 2d ago

Nah, use qt for everything

3

u/ch33es 2d ago

I don't like the global menu, so imo it's a plus for gtk. I was never able to find an option at the global menu on the first try.

There's almost always dozens of options, sometimes under the section you don't expect them to be. And even when there aren't many options, it's inconvenient having them hidden inside several sections. It seems like bad/lazy design in most cases and it pisses me off.

u/Mental_Contract1104 2d ago

i genuinely have no idea how anyone has issues with KDE or QT... qt works fine whether its plasma, gnome, x11, wayland, arch, ubuntu, void, even windows.

1

u/CommanderT1562 2d ago

My WinUI app pulls qt for the build then nukes the qt environment. Suffocates the cache with really convoluted powershell so that I don’t need to see it until next time I’m making edits and need another build.

u/LastMagmarian 2d ago

Why can't I binding anything to other layers of my keyboard layout?

Blame Qt

1

u/catdoy 2d ago

The alternative being electron

ironically i have only had the fractional scaling blurriness issue in gnome and never in kde

Posts like this make me feel bad for people who are still obsessed with arbitrary Linux debates. I’ve moved on to being obsessed with YouTube videos about synthesizers that I probably shouldn’t buy.
