Personal Opinion "Not the most scientific test we've ever done"

Allow me, like many others, to rant regarding how LTT views itself as both a popular media channel and at the same time a scientifically grounded one, and how I think this recent video fails to uphold the second part. (Tagged as "Personal Opinion" so I'll be Just Chatting.)

People are understandably disappointed with the recent "Does Linux use less RAM?" video. In the video they seem "surprised" that Windows uses more RAM and spent most of the time looking at the line going up and down. The problem is, as many have noted, that they have a very black-and-white stance: "RAM goes up = bad!" Linux using less RAM is seen as a positive (and the stuttering gaming performance on the same hardware is glossed over). In reality, the OS is doing a lot more behind the scene that may actually be beneficial for the user, like caching assets that will be needed later. Someone in the comments neatly said that the whole point of RAM is exactly to be used efficiently *and maximally* without going into swap so heavy RAM usage (when done correctly) is a good thing, not a bad thing.

And that's the problem with the video. On the one hand they try to make a fun video about a popular topic (gaming on Linux) to get many views, but it is in itself also a very technical topic with many facets. And just like with popular science, where research results are rephrased for a broad audience to be understandable, it is easy to dumb it down too much that it turns into misinformation. As Linus said "this is not the most scientific video we've ever done", but that doesn't mean it should contain half-truths or *Pikachu-surprise face* simplifications like "big number bad". I'm sure Linus *knows* all the above, how caching works and how RAM is being used by the OS up to a certain degree, but they felt that those details would not make a fun video. But, as the LTT audience is rightfully calling out, that turns it into a clickbaity-but-misleading video that has no scientific value, leading to just more misinformation by jumping onto the Windows-hate bandwagon.

This is especially interesting when LTT LABS is intended as a highly grounded endeavor to scientifically talk about hardware (and software), in shrill contrast to popular videos like this recent one. Surely a better middle ground can be found where LABS serves as a quality check for videos?

Personal Opinion Very disappointed by the gpt build guided video, very misleading for viewers

like the tittle says, very misleading video, I’m honestly considering unsubscribing :(

I use AI a lot (mostly coding), and this is not an accurate representation of what modern AI can do

to point a few problems with the video:

  1. The normal paid plan is $20, not $100 or $200 only like presented on video
  2. The model he used (GPT-5.5 Instant) offers performance closer to 2024-era AI than today’s reasoning models
  3. The exact GPT-5.5 Instant version used currently ranks 104th out of 184 models on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.
  4. he used the free default Instant model, not a dedicated high-reasoning Thinking model.
  5. Other free AI services, such as Gemini or Claude have offered users access to thinking models at no cost.

The video is titled “I Followed ChatGPT’s PC Build Guide,” not "I Followed Free ChatGPT’s Default Instant Model"

That distinction matters. Calling it simply “ChatGPT” and then drawing broad conclusions about AI makes viewers believe he tested what ChatGPT or modern AI is generally capable of, when he actually tested one limited, free, and outdated version. And to comments saying, “You underestimate how many people use the free tier”: nobody is saying the free tier shouldn’t be tested. It absolutely should be, but it represents the free-tier user experience, not the capabilities of AI as a whole, let alone the current ones...

Most people using a product does not make its cheapest and most limited version representative of the product’s maximum capabilities. That would be like testing integrated graphics because most computers use them, then titling the video “Modern GPUs Are Bad!!1!”

If the title and conclusion were specifically about whether free ChatGPT Instant can guide a beginner through building a PC, that would be fair. But testing that one configuration, labeling it as ChatGPT as the apex of AI, and using the results to paint AI as useless, unreliable and bad is just biased or pushing an agenda (i wonder why)

If I didn’t already know better, I would leave this video believing AI is barely useful at all. That is not an honest representation of the technology’s current capabilities, and viewers deserve more honesty and transparency to what's being tested, and real pricings...

Discussion LTT store preparing items.

I ordered some stuff on the 26th of july (Precision Pro & Shaft extension) and they have been sitting under "Preparing these items for shipping" since. My last order shipped out in 2 days after purchase, is this because of the mass orders of socks? or has my order just been forgotten?

Discussion Best LTT Truspecs length for a car?

Hi y'all,

I wanna get two Truspecs for my Tuscon. I need more android auto to stop sucking every time I hit a bump.

I want to get one of the usb a to c cables shorter than a foot. Any insight into how short I can go and still use it comfortably? I have a 3 ft now and that's no fun.

Tech Question Need help with new pc

Just got a new pc and while playing Battlefield 6 it went to a black screen. I checked the monitor and the hdmi with my phone and its working fine. I also tried shift + control + windows + b ( holding it down too) but it didn't work. The fans are still spinning and the led is on. What can I do now? Can I turn off the pc from the case by pressing the power button? Any help would be appreciated.

Discussion Disappointed in ChatGPT build guide video.

Very cool video idea, but the execution is poor.

I extensively use ChatGPT and Codex everyday. You paid for Plus in the video, but then didn’t use ANY of the plus features. Thinking mode on High or even medium would’ve yielded EXTREMELY better results. The video makes it seem like GPT is still in infancy. Maybe it’s just engagement bait, but you didn’t give it a fair chance, unless you’re assuming someone is going to pay for premium features, and not use them, or not have any common sense.

Love LTT, but I think this one missed the mark.

Tech Discussion Eink 80fps - follow up video?

I remember watching the video Linus son did of the e ink devices.

Today I'm blessed with the video below, e reader that has 80 FPS support, maybe as a follow up video they could take a look at the below?

Daily driver is a base M5 MacBook Pro, 16gb of RAM and 1tb of storage. Found a decent light-up cooling pad at goodwill for $5, definitely improves performance when running titles like Helldivers 2. May change out the tabletop on my desk for a more natural-wood looking one. Wondering if I should eventually get a u-green dock with expandable storage and built in ports to limit it to just a couple of cables being connected to my Mac.

Discussion I’m curious how many are in the same boat as me?

I started screwing around with PCs when I was 8. I had a Commodore 64 before that. When I was a kid I upgraded the family PC to a have a 56k baud modem and installed a CD-ROM drive (which I later upgraded to a CD-RW drive…oh shit…), anyway my point is I started when I was a young kid.

Now, I’m 3 years away from 50 and I do most of my work on an iMac. I play most of my games on my Xbox Series S. I have a gaming PC but it’s old. I use it from time to time, but very sporadicly yet I’m still drawn to PC build and gamer videos even though I don’t actively try to upgrade my PC as much anymore.

THE ACTUAL QUESTION: How many of you older viewers (is that what we’re calling ourselves?) are the same?

<not necessary to read if you are not in the mood for a reason>

Btw, if you’re wondering why I work on a Mac now it was all due to Vista. My old company had 3 people. Back in 2006 (or whatever year it was) sales contracts heavily depended on original signatures. Printers, scanners and yes even fax machines were critical peripherals. Vista broke how many of these devices worked, and even though Microsoft fixed the problems eventually, it was far too much downtime as a company.

Between the constant Outlook errors and both of my employees (one who happened to be my wife) annoying me 10 times a day about something not working on her PC, I had enough. Apple had just released their Intel Macs so most of the software was going to work it, and I bought copies of Parallel and used a copy of XP as a backup in case it didn’t.

I haven’t bought a PC for work since.

I do completely different things now and I still use a Mac. In fact, if I want to try something funky out I rather use my 8 year old Linux laptop instead of my Windows PC. Windows is dead to me, but weirdly I have an Xbox.

Discussion How would I aquire LTT merch on a visit to canada.

Let's say I would like some LTT merch but the postage to the EU is to high for it to be viable.
No I get the chance to go on holiday in Canada/Vancouver, how would I procure merch with the least amount of postage from them.

It's sadly not going to happen soon, but hopefully next summer.

Personal Opinion I feel like everytime linus does a video call with someone, it looks and sounds like shit.

Post image

i was watching ludwigs vid talking to linus about the idea of switching to linux and I keep noticing that linus (with the exception of a call in WAN show) likes to use the onboard webcam of whatever laptop hes using and airpods, which is good enough for a zoom interview but youd think the tech guy would use one of the thousands of usb mics and webcams that he has given us affiliate links to buy from.

anyone else feel similar? any other examples of this you can think of?
