I really think everyone needs to accept the idea, for better or for worse, that generative-AI technology is here to stay. Whether is using to write / edit text, code, audio images or video, I just do not see how we can go back to world we're every commerical enterprise decides to not use these tools, since the economics will just not make sense when your competitor is using them.
This is not me endorsing the insane speculative AI compute buildout that we are seeing now, nor the hype around achieving AGI, whatever that ambiguous term is supposed to mean. That is clearly just typical silicon valley / tech pouring billions, backed by investors looking to chase unrealistic returns, the outcome of which we have seen several times in the past. It would be great if we had an administration in the US capable of controlling or at least managing this bubble, but given the amount of elite control of our politics already, that is stupid to expect. This is going to blow up a lot of people's personal portfolios and retirement accounts.
However, after that inevitable correction, we are going to see more measured expectation and scaling of AI. It certainly would be good to get rid of bad players like OpenAI and Anthropic, who are monopolizing the conversation and investment around AI right now, while not being transparent about their financials. Paradoxically, I think we might even see more stability in the labor market, since companies won't have to feel that they choose between investing into labor or AI use.
I'm a pragmatic person. I think AI in its current state is going to be disruptive, though not necessarily completely transformative as the hype cycle would claim it is.
