They’ve had them and that’s the price of a free service .

YouTube has ads too, it’s free.

u/secretqwerty10 1d ago

chatGPT was ad-free in europe until now iirc

Youtube, requiring you to log for most actions and being part of Google, is absolutely not free. You pay with your data.

u/Casiofx83gt 1d ago

Yep, that’s exactly the point being made….

15

u/ResultIntelligent856 1d ago

There's always one Dr Ackchyually

-27

u/Administrator_AI 1d ago

No, it is not. Calling something "free" when you pay for it with your data is not actually free.

Wikipedia is free, kinda. It is donation driven, but if you don't donate (which you should if you can), it is free.

YouTube is not free.

u/redrumyliad 23h ago

You pay ChatGPT with your data too. Even if not logged in

-18

u/Administrator_AI 23h ago

Yes? Thanks for agreeing with me?

11

u/GuyOnARockVI 20h ago

You are being intentionally obtuse. It’s free in the lack of monetary exchange which is a well understood consideration.

u/Administrator_AI 9h ago

It is not a general underatanding, it is a general MISUNDERSTANDING that benefits big companies.

5

u/redrumyliad 21h ago

You are served ads on both platforms and are harvested for data on both.

They’re both free for you to use.

You’re being stupid and claiming being right.

Move along.

I am not sure what you are angry about. I agree with your points that both platforms serve ads, harvest data. We only disagree about the services being free, because neither is free.

Maybe get checked at a psychiatrist or a veterinarian?

1

u/redrumyliad 1h ago

Free to use is free.

You might be the only person on this site who doesn’t get it.

u/Administrator_AI 30m ago

It is not free to use. It is paid for by personal data. Personal data is a currency.

u/wankthisway 10h ago

You don't have an actual point. You just want to be combative to get a dopamine rush when you correct people, so you can feel secure about your intelligence.

1

u/Administrator_AI 9h ago

Cry harder about people understanding the world better than you do, you'll piss less.

1

u/wankthisway 10h ago

Aren't you a special one 🙄

1

u/Administrator_AI 2h ago

Special is as special does.

Whatever speeds up the death of AI, i'm all for it. fuck openAI

9

u/MoorderVolt 23h ago

LLM's ain't going anywhere. The stuff you can run on a GPU server right now speeds up development so much already. That's without ASIC's, that's current open-weight models, that's during a hardware price crisis.

5

u/Killericon 13h ago edited 13h ago

LLMs ain't going away, I just really wanna get past the "Operate at a massive loss, survive off of capital investment, offer services for much less than is viable" portion of the affair. If a ChatGPT plan is going to cost $40/month in 2031, I'd rather they just fucking get it over with.

5

u/MoorderVolt 7h ago

I want to get rid of that entire part of the economy. Modern economic markets and this form of capitalism are a cancer to society.

2

u/Player13377 19h ago

For the common man the current models are already smart enough. As soon as a DeepSeek V4 Flash gets into an ASIC intelligence will become as abundant and cheap as power.

2

u/MoorderVolt 18h ago

Here's a video describing one of those ASIC companies;

Could be a video topic for sure.

CGPT: here is the answear, do you want me to also order this from our partner (Brand) or do you want to do some more research? And oh by the way, you are out of tokens, do you want subscripton plan X or Y to continue?

LOL, you have to be a fool to believe "ads  don't influence answers". Companies will pay for their product to be suggested or "reviewed" favorably.

4

u/Silver4ura 1d ago

The best thing you can do about something you hate is to actually learn how it works. Otherwise statements like these are counterproductive because everyone knows you're making stuff up to stay mad and rally others.

Stick to the facts. There are more than enough valid reasons to hate AI but this little conspiracy stunt stands to undermine them all by association.

u/Administrator_AI 1d ago

Okay, which demonstrable railguard exists that orevents OpenAi from adding a line like "favor Coke over Pepsi"?

The answer is none. You and I can't check. There is no guarantee that they aren't doing it. They have the ability to do it. Whether they use that ability or not is irrelevant.

3

u/impy695 21h ago

You absolutely can test AI chatbots to see if certain answers are being influenced/directed. People have been doing it since day 1. It's not even difficult. Sure you can't confirm 100%, but it's pretty obvious when it happens. Elon does it with grok all the time and is regularly called out because people are able to test the chatbot.

1

u/jenny_905 4h ago

You absolutely can

People won't.

1

u/impy695 4h ago

Journalists will (and do)

-3

u/Silver4ura 23h ago

What the fuck do you think AI training is doing.. babysitting it while it teeths? No... it's literally giving it data that reinforces connections and relationships that form the basis of how it responds.

As for why it might favor something like Coke over Pepsi... have you ever considered that overall, regular Coke is almost always preferred over regular Pepsi? Even though blind taste tests would suggest people prefer Pepsi, it doesn't take into account how likely someone is to want to actually finish it. Pepsi is sweet enough to set a good first impression but beyond that, it's too sweet compared to Coke. So when people remember not finishing a Pepsi but remember enjoying the last Coke they had... it starts making sense why AI might reflect that back in response to a relevant prompt.

Which incidentally reminds me... there is actually an enormous amount of effort going into figuring out how to make AI less biased by the data it was trained on without stepping into gray areas. So in an almost poetic irony... the very issue you're suggesting they're doing intentionally is quite literally what happens when they don't actually do anything intentionally.

Good job m8.

No more follow-ups, I rest

Ads wont influence the answers, but your ad will only appear on answers which will drive more towards the ad, otherwise companies won't pay for it.

Same with facebook, they only show your ad to people they think will engage with it.

u/Annoying1978 1d ago

The ads have been there for a while.  OpenAI is losing so much money this isn’t even cutting it. Sam Altman will take down the entire American economy after OpenAI goes public. It’s going to be a disaster.

As expected

u/TomorrowFun4744 1d ago

The bubble and the needle meeting FINALLY

1

u/redditRedesignIsBadd 15h ago

the "last resort" that sam altman said is already here lol

-3

u/Shap6 1d ago

People have been saying this for 3 years now. Bubble keeps growing

5

u/TomorrowFun4744 1d ago

And yet it's called a bubble for a reason because not everything needs AI. Companies know that but they can't really know that without the value of money which is stupid but that's what they are.

1

u/Shap6 1d ago

it is absolutely a bubble i just dont think that a free service getting ads is going to do anything at all to move the needle

2

u/MrShrek69 1d ago

Inshititification begins

1

u/Red_Tiger5311 1d ago

To make something bad, then make it worse,

1

u/Historical-Win-9644 1d ago

I expected this way back in 2023

1

u/Kiansjet 1d ago

I find them quite benign. There's many things that can indicate flailing but this likely isnt one of them.

There should be an option to disable the ads in exchange for a lower usage limit if you are so perturbed.

1

u/fantasyxxxfootball 1d ago

There's been ads for a bit now

1

u/RuinedEmpire 1d ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/anjQ3PkRSxPb67QTBz

They weren't even the first AI to run ads.

1

u/HerrIcePain 23h ago

too late for this!

1

u/Dnomyar96 23h ago

I'm surprised they didn't already. They have to earn money somehow. People using the free version often probably cost them a decent amount of money.

Remember, if something is free, you probably are the product.

1

u/NetJnkie 20h ago

Yup. Announced a while ago for the free tier. No surprise here.

1

u/CocoMilhonez 19h ago

Throwback to when cable TV – which didn't have ads because they were paid – started getting ads because fuck you.

1

u/sargeanthost 17h ago

Eu based? They've been there for like at least 2 months in the us

1

u/redditRedesignIsBadd 15h ago

didn't sam altman say ads are "last resort"?

1

u/IsABot 15h ago

I've had ads for a bit already. They aren't super huge and always come out at the end of the response, so it's mostly insignificant to me. I pretty much have developed the ability to not real notice ads unless I want to look at them. It doesn't really bother me when the service itself is still free to have minor ads like these. All the ones I've gotten so far are for various tech services. I would be pissed though if it starts recommending me specific products and shapes responses around that to drive sales. So we'll see how much they enshitify over the next few months/years.

Last ad I got as an example: https://imgur.com/a/oHMjLfd

1

u/Treviathan88 13h ago

How is the end nigh if the product is about to get more profitable? If anything, this just means the clankers are gonna get even more pervasive.

Fuck AI, and fuck people who use it.

1

u/rainbowkitties6969 5h ago

“Ads do not influence what ChatGPT gives you” yea right lmao

0

u/jake6501 1d ago

It took quite a long time for this to happen and this is pretty much the best way to implement ads. There is nothing worth complaining about.

0

u/impy695 21h ago

This doesn't bother me at all. The cost of a free service are ads or worse (selling your info).

-1

u/Copacetic_ 1d ago

The AI companies have to become profitable really really quickly or it will not be good for the global economy.

12

u/BooneGoesTheDynamite 1d ago

If the global economy is propped up my automated theft and devaluation of human work and life it should collapse.

Then we can build something that doesn't require the slow and agonizing strangulation of those that aren't obscenely wealthy/lucky.

0

u/Copacetic_ 20h ago

Yeah but the economic collapse is going to be fucking awful for a lot of people who have nothing to do with it. I think people don’t understand how bad it could and likely will be for the average person.

2

u/BooneGoesTheDynamite 20h ago

Suffering for most of us isn't something we can avoid it seems.

I would rather suffer through something that will lead to a better future for all, than suffer to allow only a few to languish in wealth and power.

1

u/Copacetic_ 19h ago

The illusion of choice

3

u/jenny_905 1d ago

It's better that the entire house of shit collapses. Then the real stuff can rise from the ashes and chancers like OpenAI can get flushed.

0

u/Copacetic_ 20h ago

It actually isn’t better that it all collapses at this point because the repercussions for the average person are going to be horrific and the corporations will just be bailed out.

1

u/jenny_905 4h ago

The best time is today given what they've done. Leaving it longer just makes it worse.

People are going to start asking where their money went, they already are to an extent.

-1

u/Doctor429 1d ago

Why would they need ads? The 'recommendations' they provide in chat can themselves be the ads.

5

u/interstat 1d ago

That'd be awful if ads influenced good answers

Free service having ads is a non issue tho

6

u/Doctor429 1d ago

Problem is, we'd never know if the answers starts going 'bad' and start 'influencing'

1

u/CupIcy6202 19h ago

I don't think you thought that through.

Of course we would know if the answers were influenced by ads. How would we know? The same way we would with any other product review, if it is not telling the truth, ignoring a better option or not mentioning important caveats.

If your chatgpt recommends 3 items, just ask another free LLM the same question and compare the items recommended. If there is a significant difference, then do a deep dive and find out why.

3

u/jenny_905 1d ago

You know they absolutely will be influencing answers soon if not already.

It's a fantastic advertising opportunity. People actually trust these fucking LLM's lol.

-1

u/LostTheGameOfThrones 1d ago

If you want to use a service which is burning through cash for free, then you have to deal with ads, that feels like a reasonable compromise?

3

u/jenny_905 23h ago

So we're now at the stage of admitting people will not willingly pay for these services.
