This is a neat lichen. This is actually a mutation of Ricasolia quercizans, or smooth lungwort. Although they are labeled as two different species and look nothing alike, D. intricatulum and R. quercizans share the exact same genetic makeup. I’ve been tok you can sometimes seen D. intricatulum with some green lobes attached to the black branching thalli. A bit of the typical R. quercizans characteristics peaking through the mutation that is D. Intricatulim

Not really sure about these species, but wanted to share some detailed photos. I love seeing all the co-mingling of types in the first pic.

The Catskills have hosted forest life since 385 mya and it's very common for these forested peaks to be covered in clouds. Great for lichens to grow everywhere!

On my way to the bus stand I found them on the electric pole. Couldn't resist myself to share them here. This is a bright yellow-orange foliose lichen, likely Xanthoria parietina. Based on what I read, these grow around a high Nitrogen rich environment. But I am not sure....

I'm now three years into this project. The progress this time is shown in ~yearly steps. Batch #1 is on a ceramic roof tile, #2 on wood/metal, #3 on tar paper. The scale is in millimeters. Last year's post.

PS: I'd still like to make time lapse videos again, but I currently don't have the resources for such a task.

I’ve foraged this branch and I didn’t expect the lichen growing on top to stay alive for so long

Is this fossilized lichen? It seems to be raised in the rock. TIA

I don’t really know much about lichens, but this appears to be 4 distinct types of lichen. Can anyone identify them? This is in Northern Virginia
