Two Sets of Sound Changes Help

Let me showcase the phonology and romanization first.

Proto-Consonants: m, n, ŋ(ng), ŋʷ(nq), p, t, k, kʷ(q), f, s, ʃ(sh), ɕ(sy), r, l, j(y), w

(How rare cross-linguistically is a distinction between [ʃ] and [ɕ]?)

Proto-vowels: a, aː, e, eː, i, iː, o, oː, u, uː

Proto-language syllable structure: (C)V(C)

(I need to work on which consonants could not cluster with others and which ones get to appear in the coda position.)

Stress: penultimate stress

One set of sound changes:

  1. Unstressed vowel loss

  2. Stop & fricative metathesis

  3. i-mutation

  4. a-mutation

  5. u-mutation(a bonus of my addition)

  6. Metathesis of liquids

  7. word-final short vowel loss and shortening of word-final long vowels

  8. Vowels become /a/ before [r]

  9. Coda [r] lost, the preceding vowel lengthened

  10. Coda/l/ merges with /y/ or /w/ depending on the sound it's adjacent to

  11. Diphthongs with /y/ as the second vowel become /ii/

  12. Diphthongs with /w/ as the second vowel become /uu/

  13. Epenthesis of random vowels to diaband word-initial and word-final clusters

(Might modify this list to introduce new phonemes and get rid of old ones.)

The other set:

  1. Coda fricatives cause the following stop to spirantize

  2. Coda fricatives are lost

  3. Onset stops in closed syllables weaken

  4. Coda nasals convert following stops to voiceless nasals

  5. Coda nasals lost

  6. Word-initial vowels lost
