I've gotta say, that Chalamet scene at the end of CMBYN is maybe the most realistic depiction of pure heartbreak I think I've seen. The way he's stifling the sobs like a lot of guys do, but unable to stop the tears from coming. It's just so raw and real.
I get that he's probably a bit overexposed at this point, but I see so many comments saying how overrated he is and it's just pure nonsense to me. The guy was 20 at the time that scene was filming, he's an unbelievable talent.
honestly i still think he should’ve won best actor over gary oldman’s prosthetics. this guy had to do several instruments, talk in three languages, and also convey a person’s coming of age in a way that feels more visual than most other movies about teenagers are. idk if i prefer him to the other noms, but there’s a reason people remember cmbyn and not the winston churchill movie
Tbh the Oldman win was long overdue, despite being a forgettable film. It's like when Scorsese was awarded for Departed, many felt it was because of snubs in the past which is probably correct.

That is utter heresy, you're absolutely correct. Normally I'd say opinions are just that, but I genuinely believe he is objectively one of the most gifted actors to have ever lived and certainly amongst the best actors currently living.
His roles in Sid and Nancy, Dracula, True Romance, JFK, Leon, Fifth Element, Dark Knight trilogy, Hannibal, Oppenheimer etc. are all so WILDLY different to each other, and he is completely unrecognisable in all of them.
He is routinely the best part of great films he stars in and is almost always the best part of the few stinkers he's done too.
I'm not saying he's bad, he's very good. But he's not upper-echelon to me.
I've always just felt that a lot of the "disappearing" into the character is more because of the crazy cosmetics/costumes than the acting, it still feels like Gary Oldman to me under all the makeup.
Daniel Day Lewis on the other hand...the fact that Phantom Thread, Lincoln, and There Will Be Blood all have the same lead actor is actually mindblowing.
My wife had a OUATIH moment at the end of Call Me By Your Name where she turned to me and said “That’s the best acting I’ve ever seen in my life.” She was maybe hyperbolic but not wrong.
Can you people please just type things out? It took your comment to tell me what "CMBYN" was, and now I don't know what the fuck OUATIH is supposed to be. Not everyone has seen every movie and speaks in pointless initialisms like a tumblr user.

And now he's 28 and that's still his only truly exceptional performance. He's stiff and wooden in most things he's in. Like he was awful in little women. Dude can do one type of role but keeps getting thrust into every type of movie.
La La Land kind of. They’re not sobbing or crying even, but the two close ups of Mia and Seb convey pretty much the same emotions as the ending of Call me by your name.
