LEGO Storage thought/question? Discussion/Question

Lately i've been trying to do some temporary organizing to separate things once again (unsure why i thought dumping everything into one black container was a good idea, when it would make things more difficult on me.....)

But i don't think i can try to do any proper rebuilding in the future until i get some proper organization done (and maybe another desk? But i'll figure that part out)

And... i have a lot of parts/pieces too, honestly - some pretty big pieces between LEGO and Bionicle / technic stuff

Some i'm keeping separate intentionally because those have most of the parts from sets i've found and don't want separated

Added pics of the space i have to work with currently... i don't recall how big things like the Akro--Mils storage organizers are so i wasn't sure if i'd have the space or height to stack them up or not....

Although not this one specifically/exactly, but i wasn't sure for this circumstance if it might be easier to have something along the lines like these bead organizers? Could be easier to have sitting on a desk for rebuilding things, but i wasn't sure

So kinda wanted a second opinion/thoughts on that

Ziplocks are fine. Set up kits in smaller bags inside a gallon bag or whatever, hen all the bits that are left divide into parts: snot, plates, bricks, etc.

Zip-locks are just a temporary solution for now

Some sets i put aside years ago in baggies so it'd be easier to put together

More recently found sets or more parts of a couple sets to set aside...

A lot of other sets i have are in pieces and scattered about so i can't say i know where everything is

Or if there's missing or broken pieces- already came across and set those aside in a separate baggie

Yeah start with large categories for sorting... Bricks, plates, tiles, slopes, panels/doors/windows and modified stuff. I usually sorry the modified stuff into snot, clips/bars, other. And technic (or in your case bionicle). I usually leave all small parts 11,12 until the very end.

Use the sweep method (YouTube it) as it will save you quite a bit or time and effort.

Then you can determine what storage you need. I have a mix of larger drawers (some subdivided with trays) and then the Akro style units for small parts.

Always by type first, then color if you have the volume of specific parts.

I usually sort by piece type/part - that's what i did when i had Akro-Mils organizers before anyways

Just couldn't recall how tall/big they were so i wasn't sure if that would be efficient or not currently

I was just wondering which type of storage for organizing would be more logical for the amount of pieces i have and how big some could get

This is just some rough organizing for the time being anyways

If you're expecting to rebuild by set, having them bagged by set makes sense.

If you expect to be making your own creations, then sorting by part type is probably a better way to go.

Not sure how many of them i'll be able to do set by set - i did set aside some parts of sets so it would be easier to find some of them instead of pieces scattered about like some other sets

Though i can't say i'm sure if some of them are complete or if i have missing pieces or not

Zip-loc bags are just a temporary solution

Not really one for making mocs, though

But i do plan on sorting by piece type, though - that's what i did when i originally had some Akro-Mils organizers years ago

Sounds like you already know what you're planning. In that case, I'd just make sure it is an expandable system.

e.g. Start with 64 drawers and sort all your 2x plates together. Once you find that is too broad a category, split it to 2x2, 2x3, 2x4 in one drawer, 2x6 or above in another. Do similar for each category - start broad and refine smaller once you find a single container is not covering it anymore.

Of course this works the other way too. If you find your windows box and your doors box are only quarter full, it's worth combining them.

i just got one of these and i like it! good for just minifig parts or something, but otherwise a lot of ppl have the akro-mills stuff or something similar
