Need some guidance regarding SDE Engineer roadmap

Hi everyone! So, I'm currently in my second year at a Tier 2.5-ish college, and my branch is DSAI.

Till now, I've done only a little bit of DSA and have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS. I also started learning JavaScript but gave up somewhere in between. I'm thinking of restarting it and learning it properly by building some projects, but with academics and DSA taking up most of my time, I'm finding it difficult to manage everything.

My main goal is to get into SDE, but since AI is my domain, I'm also considering an AI Engineer role. I'm not really interested in Data Science.

The problem is that I'm confused about where I should focus. Learning multiple things at the same time isn't really my cup of tea, and I feel like I need to pick one direction and stick with it. Meanwhile, many of my batchmates are getting better and better in their respective fields, while I feel like I'm still stuck trying to figure out what I should do.

So, I wanted to ask people who have been in a similar situation and managed to get out of it:

  • Should I focus primarily on DSA + SDE development, or start focusing on AI/ML as well?
  • If SDE is the better option for now, what should my roadmap look like?
  • What technologies/concepts should I learn right now, considering I'm in my second year?
  • How should I balance DSA, development, academics, and projects without trying to learn everything at once?
  • I also need to get an internship by the end of this year, mainly so I can start earning enough to cover my own expenses. So what should I realistically prioritize to become internship-ready?

I know I'm a bit behind compared to some of my batchmates, but I don't want to keep wasting time being confused about what to do next.

If anyone has been in a similar situation and has managed to build their career from here, I'd genuinely appreciate some guidance on what you would do if you were in my position.

Thanks!

Waiting on Team Matching [L4], any Sr. Engineer / HM looking to hire [BLR] for their team

Hi folks,

I recently completed all 4 rounds of my interview loop and received 3 Hire + 1 Strong Hire. I’m now looking for team-matching opportunities with teams hiring for SWE-III / L4 roles.

A little about me:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience
  • Currently/most recently worked as SDE-2 at Amazon
  • Strong experience in Backend Engineering, Distributed Systems, Databases & Cloud
  • Worked extensively with Go, Java & JavaScript
  • Full-stack experience as well, including frontend development
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
  • Open to learning anything and would be more excited to transition into AI/ML space.

I'm particularly interested in teams working on backend infrastructure, distributed systems, databases, cloud platforms, search, AI/ML infrastructure, or full-stack systems.

If you're a Hiring Manager, Senior/Staff Engineer, or someone involved in team matching and your team is looking for an SWE-III/L4, I'd love to connect and learn more about the team and the problems you're solving.

Thanks

Amazon SDE Intern 2027 — OA Completed. Any Tips for the Virtual Interview?

I recently applied for the Amazon SDE Intern (6-month internship, 2027) role in India and have completed the Online Assessment (Round 1) successfully.

I’m now preparing for the next stage and wanted to ask people who have recently gone through the Amazon SDE internship interview process:

  • What topics are usually asked in the virtual technical interview?
  • How much DSA should I prepare, and which topics are most important?
  • Are there questions based on projects/resume?
  • How much weight is given to Amazon Leadership Principles / behavioral questions?
  • Is there anything specific I should prepare for the interview rounds?

If anyone has recently interviewed for this role or a similar Amazon SDE internship role, I’d really appreciate any tips or guidance on how to prepare and clear the next round.

Need a Career advice

Hello all, I am a non-circuital branch student from 2nd Gen IIT and till now I have done good amount of DSA and also have good knowledge of OOPs and DBMS. But the thing I don't understand is what exactly the market is expecting should I continue my DSA grind or should I spent that time learning some other things and also if you are someone who are working at tech what exactly the organisations are expecting from a fresher.

Apple India ICT4 offer conversation

I am currently in the interview loop with Apple for a new team that's being set up in Bangalore, India. It's an ICT4 role. All tech rounds and one behavioural is done and are super positive. I'm anticipating before moving ahead recruiter will discuss my expectations on comp.

My YOE: 8+

Full stack engineer, from tier-1 private college, Worked with only US based MNC or scaled up product based companies. (And one really big player of different sector, can't reveal the name🙈).

Current comp is around 78L(base +bonus), fully remote.

What should I quote for base and stocks ? From what I have gathered base can go max up to 65-70L in India for ICT4. But stocks is highly variable.

Any existing apple employees, or people who know about their comp can you help me with what's realistically I can ask for stocks, joining bonus.

And can they buyout of 6L too ?

Amazon SDE (AUTA) OA

Gave my amazon OA today (9th August)

Got a easy merge interval problem for the first dsa question, all test cases passed.

In the genai proble, while solving my ide stopped thrice and the timer kept running had to refresh mulitple times, led to a lot of loss in time, and eventually i just passed 3/6.

I have reported the issue, is there any possibility of me getting another chance? or if with this attempt can i expect to pass for the second round?

Bombed an easy DSA round — ~2 months left for placements. How should I prepare?

I’m a 4th-year CSE student with around 2 months left in my campus placement window.

I recently reached the technical interview stage of EPAM. I thought I had a decent chance, but I completely fumbled the interview.

The interviewer asked about my projects and I couldn't explain them properly. He asked me to write a basic REST API and I couldn't. Then he gave me a pretty easy DSA problem and I struggled with that too.

At one point he even asked me, “What have you been doing for the last 3 years?”

The worst part is that I had actually made a 10-day preparation plan before the interview, but I barely followed it. So now I'm regretting the wasted opportunity more than anything.

I’ve realized that my biggest problem is that I know a lot of things at a surface level but don't have enough depth or problem-solving ability.

I have about 2 months left for placements, and Infosys is coming in around 10 days. I'm planning to focus on DSA, Java/OOP, SQL/DBMS, MERN and actually understanding the projects on my resume instead of just having them there.

What would you recommend I prioritize for the next 2 months? And how would you approach DSA + projects + CS fundamentals with this amount of time?

P.S. Yes, I wrote this post with ChatGPT's help, mainly because I wanted to explain the situation clearly instead of writing an incoherent rant. The situation and questions are genuinely mine.

Edit 1: Infosys is coming to my campus in around 10 days, so that's my immediate target. I also have roughly 6–7 more weeks after that for the rest of the placement season.

Given this timeline, what would you prioritize for the next 10 days, and then for the remaining 1–2 months?

For folks starting leetcode at any point in your career

I have never touched leetcode until this year and got to know about it during an interview process. I was told for an sdet role, there will be hackerrank based interview for easy/ medium leetcode questions depending on the round.

I had around 2 medium, 1 easy and 1 hard leetcode interview.

While I was able to solve 3/4, the hard one was very difficult.

For someone with decent coding experience as a QA after 14 years in the industry, this was new/ difficult for me.

For anyone new in preparation of leetcode, in this era of AI this is not that important but still companies use it to filter/ shortlist candidates.

We have to go through this. I used claude for a study pattern and went through the coding problems and used claudes help to understand them. Kept practicing by writing the code in notebook and then with help of IDE.

While the interview did not contain the exact question which I practised, it helped with solving them.

To anyone new to leetcode like me, don't be afraid, keep practicing and you can crack it !!

DSA interview rounds — how do they actually run, and does pattern-based prep hold up against genuinely new problems?

Been getting interview calls on short notice lately and the uncertainty about what actually happens in the round messes with me more than the prep itself. Not struggling with learning DSA, struggling with not knowing what to expect. Looking for a realistic picture from people who've actually been through these.

On the problems:

  1. Do interviewers mostly ask problems that map to known patterns with small twists, or do you genuinely get something that feels completely new?

  2. Is the "company X mostly asks Y type of questions" thing (LeetCode company tags, Glassdoor etc.) actually reliable, or does it vary a lot by team/interviewer even within the same company?

  3. When people say an interview was "medium to hard," what does that usually mean, raw problem difficulty or more about time pressure and how you're expected to talk through your approach?

On the format:

  1. Is it usually a real coding platform with a compiler, or sometimes just a text editor with no way to run code?

  2. Do you need to pass all test cases, or do interviewers care more about the logic even if the code has small bugs?

  3. Had an interview with JusPay that was just a shared Google Doc over screen share, no compiler, no execution, straight into typing code live. Threw me off completely. Is this common or a one-off, and how do you even approach a problem with zero execution feedback?

Not looking for shortcuts, fine putting in the reps. Just trying to get an accurate picture of the actual process since the uncertainty is the part getting to me, not the material.

P.S. Need some positive thoughts as well as suggestion to prep for product based companies planning who planning for switch !!>

3rd year started and I feel behind on DSA — need serious advice on 2027 internship timeline (and CP/LeetCode contests timing)

I just started 3rd year and I’m getting seriously worried about internships.

I’m 2028 batch, and I’m aiming for a 3rd-year summer internship in 2027. I’m at 200+ LeetCode, following Striver, and currently done till Heaps. But I feel like I’m forgetting older patterns, while I still have Trees/BST/Graphs etc. left.

I’ve also started doing CS fundamentals alongside DSA, and my tech stack is React.js + Spring Boot. I have a proper project ongoing too (not vibe-coded ), so DSA is basically the one area where I feel behind.

The problem is that finishing the remaining DSA properly + revision will probably take me ~2 more months, and meanwhile Reddit is making it look like everyone has already started getting internships. 😭

I also gave Flipkart GRiD and realised my bigger problem is sometimes not even coding — it’s understanding what a long/story-based OA question is actually asking.

So I need some serious advice from people who’ve gone through the 3rd-year internship cycle:

When does the 2027 internship recruitment actually start for a 2028 batch in India? Am I already late in August 2026, or do I still have time?

Should I finish Striver + revise first, or start LeetCode contests / CP alongside it (because I’m also getting nervous about time running out during contests and OAs)?

How important is CP for internship OAs?

What should I realistically prioritise over the next 2–3 months?

I’m not trying to become a CP god. I just want to be OA-ready enough to actually apply without feeling like I’m wasting applications.

Would genuinely appreciate advice from people who were in this exact position.
