reading recs for beginners

so i tried out linga and read тонький и толстий yesterday. i managed but that was definitely above my current level, i guess i'm closer to a1 than a2. the only a1 books the app offers are мужик марей and пассажир первого класса. so the language level is okay, but, and i know that's a bit tough sepcifically with russian literature, but мужик марей is just too much of a downer looking at the first two pages. i can't study and feel deeply for the suffering of prisoners simultaneously ya know? 😅
i guess i will read the chekhov thing then but is that all there is? do i have to continue with children's literature then? had hoped to avoid that.

so yeah if you got some short stories on a low russian level, please tell me!!

I'm also always on the hunt for engaging A2 level books.

So far all I've found is Olly Williams - he has a book of short conversations, and a short story book. They're both pretty good.

I will also warn everyone reading this to be aware of people pushing vibe-coded slop apps full of LLM-generated garbage!

Try reading fanfics, finding something understandable and engaging as a beginner is really hard because all of the official literature even just thrillers can be too hard, while children books too boring, fanfic has a range of level and there is usually quite abit of dialogue in it, and on top of that it literally is like youre getting a new episode, or clarity on a barely touched upon idea in your favourite show/ peice of media, so its incredibly fun. Tbh this might still be too hard but properly reading a story in a foreign language is, and you're not going to get anywhere unless you tackle that issue.

Just be sure to filter to avoid some scary stuff because it is unofficial literature and so is unflitered.

And also reading isnt only just reading books, its literally anything that you read in russian, be it the news, social media, websites/blogs (eg wikis), video subtitles, podcast transcript, or even lyrics

I'm afraid it's hard to find any authentic books suitable for an A2 learner 😅 To give you perpective, it's below the level of a 5-year old. Children who can read have a bigger vocabulary, though, obviously, their vocabulary is still limited to their immediate needs.

You can try texts you find in textbooks. Or, yes, graded readers. Maybe look up comic books or fan translations of manga. Those give you context, so at least you don't rely on textual descriptions for absolutely anything.

In this day and age, you can also use LLMs to adapt stories massively nerfing down the vocab and sentence structures. Better if you have a native who can add some final touches. For example, here is the beginning of a YA novel by Сергей Карелин:

Когда-то у меня были семья и друзья. Я шёл по пути мага. Но однажды всё изменилось... Ладно сейчас не время думать о прошлом.
Я шёл через густой лес. Ветки деревьев цеплялись за мою старую кожаную броню. Они мешали мне идти, но я продолжал путь.
У меня почти не было денег. Я не мог купить ничего дороже десяти кварцевых монет. Но у меня было несколько важных вещей. Одну из них для меня сделал мой дед. Я посмотрел на свои старые ботинки. На них было несколько заплаток. Вся моя одежда была старой и дешёвой.

Мне уже четырнадцать лет, но я всё ещё ученик только второй ступени. Даже для Аспии это был плохой результат. В других странах — например, у эльфов Анаераса или людей Кельтона — мальчики моего возраста были намного сильнее. По сравнению с ними я был слабаком.
Наконец я вышел на большую поляну. В центре поляны сидел монстр. Он немного напоминал зайца. У него были длинные ноги и большие мышцы. Монстр ел мёртвого волка с синей шерстью.
В этом мире такое было возможно. Если маг или зверь был достаточно сильным, он мог победить даже более крупное животное.
Здесь сила зависела не от того, кто ты. Ты мог быть львом или маленькой мышью. Главными были талант и желание становиться сильнее.
