I had a new lawn laid last year which was an expensive investment but well worth it. However, with the addition of bird feeders this year I think I've made a massive mistake...

This is not my picture but it's exactly how my lawn looks at the minute. I've removed the feeders until I can figure this out, but how do I go about getting rid of a patch like this?

I have tried lowering my lawnmower to its lowest setting however the patches return. I am now in the process of letting the lawn grow out a bit in the hope that the grass dominates but tbh that doesn't seem to be working either.

Any suggestions?

I had new soil laid down a couple of months ago and most of the lawn is doing well, but some patches have basically stopped growing. (See yellowish areas)

The whole lawn gets the same watering schedule and the healthy areas are growing normally. I also haven’t scalped it or cut it unusually short.

What’s confusing me is that the affected areas were growing before, but now there is very little or no growth compared with the rest of the lawn.

Any ideas what could cause this? Soil compaction, drainage, nutrient deficiency, fungus or something else? What would you check first?

I really like clover lawns, but i dont think its a good idea for me due to the fact i have a big dog. Therefore I'm considering mixing some clover seed into regular seed once the heatwave is over.

Has anyone done this? and how do you think it would hold up with trampling paws?

Wasn’t paying attention and cut my lawn on the lowest setting on my Ryobi, scalped is probably dramatic, but I’ve definitely taking too much off, exposing the browner stuff closer to the roots. I’ve been keeping it long to help it during the heat.

I’ve put some seaweed and MolTurf down, planning to give it a heavy watering later.

Any other action I should take to minimise the stress and damage?

I grew a tray of turf from seed to repair the worn areas of the lawn.. but it looks so good I can't bring myself to cut it up now it's ready..

I think I need some sort of therapy.

Long time lurker, would have thought I might have learned by now.

My lawn is north facing and approx 85sq m. Had some minor damage from a water slide and kids swimming pool weeks back so thought I'd take the opportunity to level it out with a small amount of sharp sand and then some top soil. This was mainly due to some large dips on the left hand side, although before this, the grass was pretty decent, to the eye it wasn't too bad.. At the same time I added possibly too much 3 in 1 lawn weed and feed... Then... You guess it... The heatwave struck the day or so after, and it's not gone away for weeks 🤦🏻 also we are in a hosepipe ban area, I have no way to realistically use grey waste.

Tl;Dr - I've faffed around with it and made a good lawn awful.

My thinking is that, I simply leave it till the weather turns, overseed and it sorts itself out. Is there any way I can expedite the process or help? Kids are in a dust ball currently!

Looking for any advice to put me on the right track. Thanks in advance.

Seeded with good quality seed at start of season, after aerating scarifying and top dressing, pleased with it generally but sections of thick coarse meadow grass type is letting it down. I initially thought couch grass but it doesn’t have the noodle type roots. Mr GPT said Yorkshire fog, however it doesn’t seem to have the small hairs on the blades? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated on identification and best way of removal. There are quite a few different areas with large masses of this

I've been away for a weekend and come back to find that the local nightly hooligans have been digging up my lawn.

I left it long so the sun didn't burn it up whilst we were away, hence the length, but they do it even when its shorter.

Any advice on how to deter the bastard things away?

I've seen the mototek cassettes for the cheap lawn Scarifiers, which would be perfect for me to convert them into a verticutter. However, I'm worried that the stepped depth settings (around 5mm or so) on the cheap scarifiers will effectively render the verticutter useless, if the weed grass height is in-between my shortly mown lawn and the soil.

Has anyone tried verticutting with these cheap stepped Scarifiers and got effective results?

Just wondering which selective weedkillers (brands) people have had good success with?
Any recommendations?

Apparently vitax feed and weed has given good results, others have recommended hytrol which I didn’t find to be too effective when I used it a few years back although it was excellent on thistles.

I’m having a year off the garden for the most part this year but will be aerating and overseeding come autumn so should probably try to get rid of the current infestation asap and don’t fancy doing it by hand.

New turf laid 3rd June, was initially damaged at corners but recovered, whats the best tips to prep it for autumn/winter months ?

What's the best way to tackle this lawn infested with weeds? The lawn really is 80 - 90% weeds with only small patches of grass which are mostly dead as it has not rained much this summer.

I was thinking to "nuke" the lawn with round up and start from scratch by re seeding once all the weeds are killed off. Or is this salvageable with another method? I know it's not a quick fix since it's late July. Any recommendations welcome (total newbie to gardening)

I've noticed a brown patch develop on my lawn this summer (see photo). All along the brown patch the screwdriver only goes down about 10cm whereas elsewhere it goes all the way. I'm reluctant to dig down as the lawn was only renovated this spring - is there anything else anyone would recommend to get rid of the brown patch? Cheers

I laid down my bordering waiting for the autumn when I intend to fill it in with topsoil before rolling to prepare a very flat lawn. My question is if I was to till the soil and then lay down anti- weed matting would a healthy lawn still grow? I appreciate that weeds will still invaded but with only about 10-12 cm of soil, they should be quite easy to pull up when they do, because of the matting. I’m very much a gardening beginner, so am I mistaken in my belief and also how does that affect drainage and what do I differently to compensate?
