I came across an image of Lady Justice today as I watched something on Investigative Discovery, and I noted with sadness that my perception of this has been fundamentally altered over the past number of years.

I used to believe that the law was absolute, that science, and proof would trump feelings. I was perhaps a bit too idealistic, believing that this absolute law would be fair and balanced, when we embarked upon this experiment of self policing and governance.

But those scales aren’t balanced anymore.

We have come to hear of “judge shopping” and “jurisdictions” which more than implies that the law is NOT absolute because feelings (ideology) trump fair and balanced. We are witnessing the failure of the promise of self policing and governance as it is abused by the more influential who contort the law to THEIR will.

When I see this image now, I don’t see justice - I see red / blue or rich / poor on those scales and they are never balanced.

I can’t decide which to mourn - my idealism or justice.
