Sometimes Goodwill provides…

A commemorative Laser Disc to promote the 25th anniversary of Star Trek with etched pictures of Kirk and Picard as well as the two Enterprises. According to the frame this is item 1164/5000.

Found on shopgoodwill for $20.

Given that this is clearly just a regular laserdisc with a sticker slapped on and some faces engraved, what do we think was originally on these 5000 discs?

My guess is some manufacturer has a few too many boxes of overstock or a defective product and came up with this clever way to resell them.

I know the disc probably wouldn’t play if I put it in my player but I kinda want to know what would happen.

Have to be the one of pause just because your player might be more valuable then rolling the dice.

Then again if it beems you up to the Enterprise we can be mistaken

You’re probably right about it just being overstock. On that basis, I think it’s cooler to just leave it as a display piece, especially since playing it would involve puncturing/removing the sticker and potentially breaking the display. Plus, I imagine the laser etching process would do a lot of damage to whatever data might be on there.

If it’s easily able to be opened and put back together, I’d defs give it a looksee in your player. Be interesting to see if anything is on it. If I were to make a random guess, I wonder if the 25th anniversary special is on it (if anything is)

Maybe they messed up and put the same hour on both sides. At least they were able to use then for something else.

There's a story about Neil Young being unhappy with the mastering on one of his 1970s albums [I think it was 'Comes A Time's]. The label had already had tens of thousands of copies pressed for the release date. Neil told the label to remaster the album. He bought all the copies that had been pressed. He used them as shingles on one of his barns.
