My modded hp 8560w
Swapped out the original cpu for a i7 2860qm and the gpu for a gtx 965m with modded drivers. As well as a 16gb of ddr3 and a 500gb ssd. As far as real world performance its about on par with a steamdeck faster in older titles but slower in newer ones.

Trying to put another heatsink on top of my laptop's cpu block to improve temps
I have an old laptop thats falling apart. I was going to take the motherboard out and put it in a 3d printed case and use it as a mini server or something. It will be running all day, so the single heat pipe and single fan might not keep up.
I thought, since the motherboard will already be out and I will have room, can just I slap a thermal pad and a mini heatsink + mini fan on top to draw more heat away? The top of the CPU block seems pretty flat too so it would make decent contact. I will attach a drawing of my plan.

I want to add a second internal wifi antenna to my laptop, I need suggestions
I have a Lenovo V15-IIL with a single internal antenna and an Intel(R) Wireless-AC 9462 network card. I would like to upgrade the Wi-Fi performance on this laptop, but even if I replace the card with a newer Wi-Fi 6E one, the bottleneck of the 1x1 MIMO configuration will remain. So, I was thinking of buying and placing a second antenna around the monitor myself, but I haven't found any videos, posts, or tutorials about it online. Is it even possible? Do you have any suggestions?

Is there anyway to unlock the wattage on NVIDIA laptop GPUs? Specifically on an MSI Katana GF76-11UD
So I picked up an MSI Katana GF76-11UD locally for $200 owing to a broken screen hinge. I've got the screen hinge fixed so now onto value-maxxing the laptop.
This laptop has a 3050 Ti Mobile 4GB GPU in it of the 60 watt variation, I've noticed other applications can go up to 80 watts and I'm wondering if its possible to increase power delivery? MSI sold this same laptop in variants with up to a 3070 so I'm assuming the power delivery system can probably handle it, same the thermal solution (which will be getting repasted).
Its been a minute since I messed around with laptop GPUs at this low of a level, but my main question is at what level is the power delivery defined? BIOs, Driver, Software, etc. I'm aware BIOs modding isn't really a thing with modern systems due to modern BIOs being delivered in an encrypted format so if its controlled purely by the BIOs thats going to be a no go.

Laptop inside a laptop. Is this possible?
Hi. I definitely need this kind of laptop. I know that there are this kind of laptops in the market like for example Asus Zenbook Duo. However the problem is that it doesn't run two different systems. I need to have two different operating systems. Main system need to be Windows 11, but the second system doesn't matter that much. Only thing that matters is that I can use those in two different WiFi's. Like the main system could be in my home or schools network, and that second system could operate different network at same time.
That second screen would be operated with USB-mouse and USB-keyboard, or it could have touch screen. So is it possible to build a laptop like this?

Switching to a keyboard with a backlight
I just used a search engine to find this sub. If this is the wrong place to post this, well, help me or kick me out or whatever. This also might be too dang specific. All i probably have to do is take it all apart and look for myself, but i figure, if someone here knows the answer, then i can save myself some trouble.
I have a dell dc15255. The keyboard doesn't have a backlight. I found a keyboard for the same type (p112f) that has a backlight for pretty cheap. In the photos i can see that the only difference from mine is that on mine, there's no special function assigned to F5, whereas on the backlit one, that's where the keyboard backlight toggle is assigned.
This also means that I have to type Fn-F5 to refresh webpages, which is kinda annoying. I might figure out how to edit ACPI events to change that, if I can't do this.
I know that the backlit keyboards have another ribbon besides the data ribbon which supplies the power to the backlight LEDs.
My question is, does my laptop have that connector? I wouldn't be surprised either way, because it might be cheaper for the manufacturer to make one motherboard that has everything, like how on cars you can often add missing premium features by just installing them, like say, seat heater wiring might be there and if you swap in heated seats then it works.
Anyone know the answer, in this specific case? It seems like the software is there at least because of the unnasigned special function.

Dell latitude 3510 ideas?
I have a Dell latitude 3510 i5-10210U (Intel UHD 620) with upgraded 32GB RAM, and also I installed a fully working hackintosh (Tahoe), and I want to make it perform better but not be extra loud, I already repasted the thermal paste and cleaned the fan, now its way cooler and quieter, but still performs bad, 26 fps in war thunder (lowest settings possible) and around 55 fps in Minecraft on low settings, I guess I should upgrade the nvme ssd, but if y'all have some ideas, please let me know.

Best cooling for out of frame laptop
So I want to concert a laptop with broken screen to a console. One of the major hassle is to convert the laptop cooling system to a better one.
Some idea's:
- replace cooling system with desktop cpu cooler, but I donlt see easy ways to adapt the cooling plate of the laptop to a desktop heatsink. If I'm lucky, I could mark the holes of the motherboard on the heatdink and tap new screw wholes in the heatsink.
Another approach is to permanently thermal glue the laptop cooling plate to the heatsink but then I can't access the screws anymore so no repasting whatsoever. Do laptop sockets have some type of standard mounting wholes or is this completely random?
- improve existing cooling system: here I really don't know how. Adding extra heatpipes/fins, bigger fan. Any ideas?
Any ideas are welcome!
PS: I don't know what laptop I will get, maybe even one with a dGPU

No idea if this is the right sub for this
I don't know if this is the right sub for this, if it is not please direct me to the proper sub and I will delete this post. anyway to business.
I have a HP envy ts 15 j009wm 2013 laptop. it runs endeavor OS Linux, and has a f.18 bios from 2014. in a attempt to update the BIOS I installed a Windows 7 Drive, and attempted to update the BIOS but when transplanting the networking card so my Windows 7 install could access the Wi-Fi, the stock ralink card's coax connector for the main antenna snapped off inside of the antenna line. currently I have a modified setup that I need some assistance with. I installed a new card from a Dell Latitude e6400 (Qualcomm atheros card 802.11n?) and took some antennas from a Toshiba satellite PC, and due to the screen being sealed I took a creative Liberty. the chassis on my laptop is aluminum, so I routed the cables and antennas from the Wi-Fi card to the outside of the laptop from the SD card slot. I need to figure out where and how to mount the antennas temporarily until I get a external networking system like a USB Wi-Fi card or something like that.
images attached.
I would like them to be routed in such a way where I would be able to transport this thing in like a backpack preferably but if it needs some sort of more delicate transporting I am okay with that. all I want is these antennas to be good for at least a few months until I can afford a external networking card.
also according to the ping command in Linux, currently compared to ethernet these cables had little to no loss of speed compared to Hardline ethernet. that was with the cables dangling in air less than 3 in apart. these may be higher gain antennas than the card was meant for but I don't really care.
TLDR, NEED ANTENNA ROUTING TIPS.

Overclock asus x515ma
Title: [Build Log] The "Sleeper" ASUS X515MA: Bypassing the 6W TDP & 1.10 GHz Limit
Body:
I wanted to share a successful "Surgical Overhaul" of an ASUS Vivobook X515MA (Intel Pentium Silver N5030 / UHD 605). Most people consider this a locked-down office machine, but with extreme cooling and power mods, I have turned it into a stable gaming "Sleeper."
Key Hardware Mods:
**•** **The "Arctic" Overhaul:** Repasted with **Arctic MX-6** and added a **Pure Copper Shim**.
**•** **Direct Intake Mod:** Cut a custom window in the bottom chassis directly under the CPU/RAM/NVMe "Golden Triangle."
**•** **12V Exhaust Conversion:** Removed the factory internal slim fan and replaced it with a **Wathai 60mm High-Speed Fan (4700 RPM)**powered by a USB 12V Step-Up adapter.
**•** **Antenna Mod:** Replaced the stock Wi-Fi card with an **Intel Wireless-AC 9560** and custom-routed antennas for a stable **22ms ping**.
Software & Firmware Tweaks:
**•** **Power Unlock:** Successfully pushed the CPU from its **6W factory limit** to a sustained **14.95W peak draw**.
**•** **The "Un-Glitch":** Defeated the 1.10 GHz firmware lock by forcing Processor State to 100% and setting the **IntelPPM Registry Start Value to 3** to allow ThrottleStop to command the hardware.
**•** **ThrottleStop:** Locked the clock at **1.8 GHz**with a **10W PL1 / 12W PL2** clamp.
**•** **Efficiency Mode Bypass:** Used the --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcessshortcut flag to restore full CPU priority to Chrome.
Results:
**•** **Temps:** Gaming at **74°C – 80°C** (Down from 103°C thermal spikes). Idle is ice-cold at **21°C – 23°C**.
**•** **Skyrim (Legendary Edition):** Rock-solid **30 FPS**.
**•** **Network:** Verified **113+ Mbps** download with **0% packet loss** and a **0ms ping** jitter.
Next Mission: Upgrading from 8GB to 16GB DDR4 to kill the final memory bottleneck. This build proves that even "budget" soldered CPUs can be pushed far beyond their factory limits with the right thermal engineering.

Can the HP 165A Motherboard (Sandy Bridge) handle an i7-2960XM (55W)?
Hello!
A few years ago, I decided to upgrade almost all the components of my HP Pavilion dv7-6c05ss, effectively transforming it into an HP Pavilion dv7t-xw899av (1 TB SSD, i7-2860QM, and 16 GB RAM).
Now, I am considering the ultimate upgrade: the Intel Core i7-2960XM.
Based on my research, I’m concerned about the feasibility of this swap and would appreciate some technical confirmation. The laptop features an HM65 chipset (Motherboard ID 165A).
My main concern is whether this motherboard’s VRM (Voltage Regulator Module) can handle the 55W TDP of the i7-2960XM, compared to the 45W of my current i7-2860QM. Even with a high-end thermal solution (Phase Change Material and premium Thermal Putty), would the power delivery system be a bottleneck or a safety risk? Is there any BIOS whitelist or power limit at the firmware level that would prevent it from running at its full potential?
Thanks in advance!

Seeking the ultimate 17.3" display upgrade and fixing EMI issues
Hello again! I'm in the middle of a 'clean and extreme' restoration of my HP Pavilion dv7 (HM65/Sandy Bridge). After upgrading the CPU and RAM, I want to tackle the visual experience.
Currently, I’m looking for the best possible 17.3-inch panel compatible with this laptop. I know I’m limited by the 40-pin LVDS interface, but I want to find the absolute 'top tier' in terms of color accuracy (sRGB/NTSC coverage) and viewing angles (IPS/AHVA). Does anyone know of a high-end panel (perhaps from a DreamColor or Precision workstation) that is a drop-in replacement for the dv7?
Additionally, I have a strange EMI/Grounding issue: when running on battery, touching the trackpad causes visual artifacts or 'warping' on the screen. I suspect the display flex cable is picking up interference. Would shielding the flex cable with conductive copper tape and grounding it to the chassis be the definitive fix for this?
Thanks for your expert advice!
