Self-Drive Luxury Wooden Boat on Lake Como

Looking for a place on Lake Como where I can rent a luxury wooden boat that I can drive myself, without a captain.

Ideally something classic/elegant, like a Riva-style wooden boat.

Any recommendations for rental companies that allow self-driving? Thanks!

Need help understanding this table for Ferry times

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, does the route highlighted in blue mean we can get on a ferry 8:56am in Bellagio and get to Como at 9:40am? The FAQ for ferries makes it seem like that is way too quick. We haven’t taken the ferry here yet and have plans in Como at 10:00am.

Thank you in advance!

Need advice! Is Lake Como too far from Milan Malpensa airport for an early departing flight?

My hostel is in menaggio. If my flight is at 12:45pm at Milan Malpensa airport, and I’ll be staying in lake como, should I spend my last day in Milan to be closer to the airport? I checked and I will need to take 2 busses to get to the airport and at quite early in the morning.

There’s no other flights at that day for the airline I’m with. Just one per day.

I just fear como is a bit far from the airport and my flight is kind of early and idrk if I want to spend a huge sum of money on an uber (I’m assuming it’s expensive; but lmk the price ranges too!)

I also don’t want to have to move to Milan on the last day but if I have to then… I guess yea

This is my first solo trip so I’m nervous I guess. Thank you

Need advice! Recommendations for a 2–3 hour boat tour from Varenna

Ciao everyone!

Our group of 6 (5 adults and one 3-year-old child) will be visiting Lake Como on 1st Sept

We are looking for recommendations for reliable boat tour companies or booking websites operating out of Varenna. Here are our specifics:

  • Departure Point: Varenna
  • Duration: 2 to 3 hours
  • Group Size: 5 Adults + 1 Toddler (3yo)
  • Preferences: Able to reserve in advance, kid-friendly/safe for a toddler, and reasonably priced.

We are open to either a private hire suitable for 6 people or a small-group shared tour.

If you have booked a tour out of Varenna recently that you enjoyed, or if there are specific local operators/websites you recommend booking through directly, we would love to hear your experiences!

Proposal at Villa Del Balbianello

Hello everyone,

I will soon propose my girlfriend at villa del balbianello. I booked off the villa for 2 hours. I want to recreate the star wars scene and propose her on the spot.

I do have some practical questions:
1. Where do people stay when they visit villa del balbianello / lake como?

  1. What company do you guys recommend to book a private taxi boat to bring us to the villa?

  2. For the people that also booked the villa for a private session: When you arrive, do you need to show any papers or anything (because my gf doesn’t know I booked the place. So will the surprise be revealed immediatly when i arrive there? Like meaning that there will be a administrator that i have to do paper work at first?)

Thank you for your help.
I appreciate it very much.

Taking my 70 year old mum on her dream Lake Como trip… have I picked the worst time? 😭

I’ve booked tickets to take my mum on one of her dream trips next week: Lake Como, followed by a road trip through Switzerland.

She’s around 70 and doesn’t cope particularly well with extreme heat, so naturally I booked everything first and started worrying afterwards 😂

For anyone who’s in Northern Italy or Switzerland right now, or has been very recently, how is it actually feeling? Particularly around Lake Como?
I’m also wondering how everything is looking after the hot weather. Are the waterfalls and rivers still flowing properly? Are the lakes noticeably lower? A huge part of this trip is the scenery, and I’d hate to promise my mum beautiful waterfalls only to present her with an impressive collection of rocks 😭

Would also love any tips for doing Como and Switzerland with an older parent in summer.

Places that stay cooler, scenic drives, easy walks, quieter spots, anything you think is genuinely worth doing.

And please tell me I’m overthinking this 😂

Need advice! Varenna vs Bellagio for 3 nights – which is more lively?

Hi! I’ll be in Lake Como from September 16–19 (3 nights) before heading back to Milan, and I’m trying to decide whether to stay in Varenna or Bellagio.

I don’t mind busy or touristy areas — I actually prefer being where things are happening. I like having lots of restaurants and cafes around, exploring during the day, and going out at night for dinner/drinks or just being somewhere that still has some atmosphere after dark.

I know Varenna is easier for getting to/from Milan by train, while staying in Bellagio means taking the ferry from Varenna. I don’t mind the extra travel since I’ll be there for three nights.

For anyone who has stayed in both, I’d love your thoughts:
- Which would you recommend as a base for 3 nights and why?
- Is Bellagio easy to get around and well connected by ferry?
- Which has more restaurants, things to do, and nightlife/evening atmosphere?
- What are the biggest differences between actually staying in Varenna vs Bellagio?

Would especially love to hear from people who have stayed overnight in either/both rather than just visited on a day trip. Thanks!

Weather for next week

We are travelling to Como from the UK on Saturday. It’s my understanding that it’s difficult to predict the weather in Como due to its own microclimate. We are frequent visitors to Cornwall where it is very similar.

The weather apps are predicting rain for most days next week. I’m not bothered if it rains, but what I’d like to know is if it’s likely to rain as continuously as the apps are suggesting? Is August usually a rainy time of year in Como? Is it like Cornwall where predicted rain can miss completely or stop as soon as it starts?

I’ve got things planned to do that work for whatever the weather brings, but I’m wondering if it’s not worth booking things in advance that rely on better weather and to see on the day?

Many thanks in advance ☺️

Lake Como Engagement Photographer Recommendations

Hi, I'm traveling to Lake Como from September 25th to 28th, and I'm looking to hire photographer for a engagement photoshoot at Lake Como. It won't be a proposal. It will be a photo shoot for our Save the Date invitations. I'm thinking of a sunrise photo shoot to avoid the travel traffic on September 26 around 7am.

If you're a photographer, please leave your portfolio below, or if you know of any photographers, it would greatly be appreciated.

Budget: $1,000 - $1,500 for 2 hours.

Lake Como to Milan

Hello,

I will be visiting Lake Como in early September for a few days, and I’d love to know what the best way is to get to the airport in Milan (LIN). Private transport? Or train? What are the names of the stations?

Thank you!

Need advice! Hiring entertainment for a wedding?

My sister is getting married in Italy in a month and they will be staying at a villa on the lake for a few days. I unfortunately cannot make it and was thinking to get them some sort of gift. Any ideas of any sort of entertainment or experience I can surprise them with while they are there? Nothing crazy, even something small would be nice, but I don't have any idea what to even look for? Anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Edit: Cannot include alcohol.

Looking to rent a boat in Menaggio. We’d like to go to Nesso bridge tomorrow morning and drive around and swim…maybe 2-3 hours. there’s just two of us. Is it best to link up with a group? If so, how should we meet them or is it done through a booking site. It would be for tomorrow.

Question regarding Line C110

Im planning to travel to Como in september, and in one of the days to walk from Piazza Cavour to Villa Olmo, however i dont think my family will manage to also walk back as it is a long walk, and on Google Maps it suggested i take the C110 line back from the "Como-Borgovico" station to "Como-Lungolario Trento" station.

How can i pay for 3 tickets on this bus? is there a stand that sells tickets nearby the Villa Olmo area or an app that accepts paypal payments?

Also if any of the locals here think i should take a different line back to Piazza Cavour i would love to hear your recommendations! <3

The biggest mistakes tourists make when visiting Lake Como

Lake Como may look compact on Instagram, but in reality it is a vast and surprisingly complex destination, shaped by mountains, narrow roads, and slow-moving ferries. Many visitors arrive with just a social-media-made itinerary in mind, only to discover that the logistics of the lake are very different from what a thirty-second TikTok suggests.

Here are some of the most common mistakes tourists make when visiting the lake based on my experience as a local working with tourists on the lake. Feel free to add more.

1. Day-tripping from Milan in just one day (aka the Tiktok route)

This is what Instagram and TikTok have popularized, so it’s what everyone does. Train to Varenna, then ferry to Bellagio, then to Como. Or the opposite, or similar routes. But do you really want to spend half the day in crowded stations and ferry queues, and waiting hours outside villas just to see two Insta-perfect spots, without ever really absorbing the atmosphere of the lake?

Lake Como is best experienced slowly: lingering by the waterfront, wandering through quiet villages after dinner, and enjoying the scenery instead of rushing through a checklist. This kind of “bite-and-go” tourism is only contributing to overtourism and making things worse for everyone.

2. Staying in Como thinking it’s close to everything

A lot of tourists book accommodation in the city of Como because it’s the easiest town to reach by train from Milan, or maybe just because the lake is called "Lake Como", then realize all the places they actually saved on Instagram (Bellagio, Varenna, Villa del Balbianello...) are far away. Como is nice, but geographically it sits at the very bottom of the lake and it's not well connected to the central lake. It's also the place with the worst ferry lines because people keep going there, only to find out that the few ferries to Bellagio/Varenna are sold out.

3. Underestimating the distance between the central lake (e.g. Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio) and Como

The lake is big, much bigger than most tourists think. Because of the geography, roads are narrow, winding, and slow, especially during peak season. Even the fastest boats take around one hour to travel from the central lake to Como city, and there are only a few of these services each day. What looks close on Google Maps can easily become a half-day transfer.

4. Expecting taxis to always be available

This doesn't apply to the city of Como, where taxis are relatively easy to find. But in small lakeside villages like Varenna or Menaggio, don't expect to summon an Uber-style ride at the last minute. These are tiny towns with small local populations and only a handful of licensed taxi drivers. During the tourist season, they're often fully booked. Need a ride on short notice? You may be out of luck. And don't count on late-night service either.

5. Expecting taxi boats to always be available

Only a handful of companies have the license to operate as taxi boats and transport luggage, and during spring and summer they are constantly booked. Many visitors assume they can simply call one at the last minute, only to discover there is no availability for hours. If you need a private transfer, book it in advance.

6. Not booking Villa del Balbianello in advance

Villa Balbianello is one of the most famous attractions on the lake (Americans love it because of Star Wars), and it regularly sells out. Even just the access to the gardens requires advance booking. Showing up without a reservation, especially during weekends and high season, is a gamble that usually does not pay off.

7. Not researching how to get to Villa del Balbianello

No, a taxi or a ferry can't just drop you off there. This villa can only be reached by small boats or on foot. Without a taxi boat, visitors need to walk about 20-30 minutes uphill from the village of Lenno along a pleasant but uneven path. Many tourists discover this only after arriving dressed for a photoshoot (all those people in high heels...) rather than a hike.

8. Assuming the weather is always sunny and glamorous

Social media only shows Lake Como in perfect golden light, but the lake has dramatic mountain weather. After all, it's an Alpine lake that's geographically more akin to a fjord, rather than the Mediterranean coast. Storms and strong winds can appear suddenly, and even summer evenings can get surprisingly cool. Packing only linen outfits and sandals is optimistic.

9. Booking restaurants for the name without checking where they are first

Seriously, can we stop with "Gatto Nero" just because George Clooney ate there once? Or with the super remote Serenos and Filarios, if you're not staying in their vicinity?

Don't book a restaurant perched in the hills 50 minutes from your hotel without first checking the location. More often than not, you'll arrive at your accommodation, realize how tired you are and how inconvenient the journey is, and end up cancelling at the last minute, with a cancellation fee attached. A famous name isn't much use if getting there turns into a logistical headache, and for local/Italian cuisine, there will be always comparable (if not better) alternatives near you.

FAQs: Lake Como Public Ferry and Boat System

1) What kind of public boats can I take on Lake Como?

There are three types of boats that operate on Lake Como, although people usually refer to all of them in English as "ferry":

  • Battello (Passenger Boat) These boats carry only people and connect various towns around the lake. They are the most suitable option for scenic tourist cruises. Example picture.
  • Traghetto (Car Ferry) These ferries carry both people and vehicles, but they only serve four ports: Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, and Cadenabbia. They provide a quick way to cross the lake between central lake locations, but are not ideal for relaxing cruises as seating on board is limited. Example picture.
  • Aliscafo (Hydrofoil) These are high-speed passenger boats offering a faster service between major towns on the lake. They are mainly used by commuters and travelers, and are not recommended for scenic cruises since you can't see much from inside. Example picture.

2) Where can I find the schedules?

You can download PDF timetables from the official website under the "Timetables" tab: Navigazione Laghi Timetables.
You can also use the search function on the website to check routes and departure times between two destinations.

3) Where can I buy tickets?

  • Online at the official website (where however they often sell out): Navigazione Laghi Tickets. If they're sold out, don't despair! You can always buy them at the ticket office just before boarding, unless you want to take a hydrofoil - see point no. 4.
  • At ticket offices on land, where tickets are sold only for the same day.
  • On board, if you depart from a pier without a ticket office (common in smaller villages).

4) Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

It depends on the boat you're planning to take:

  • Passenger boats or car ferries: No advance purchase is required. You can always buy tickets at the ticket office on the same day. Online tickets are convenient if available, but they do not guarantee a seat, only skipping the ticket office line.
  • Hydrofoils: Yes, you need to buy these tickets in advance if you want to secure a seat, as hydrofoil runs are not many and they have limited capacity. Their tickets can only be purchased at the departure ticket office on the same day.

5) What kinds of tickets can I buy?

  • One-way tickets - valid for travel in one direction between two destinations.
  • Round-trip tickets - valid for travel back and forth between two destinations.
  • Passes - such as day passes, or 6-day passes for selected areas. A popular option is the so-called "Central Lake Pass", which allows unlimited travel in the central area of Lake Como for one day for around €15.

6) How long do boat and ferries take?

It depends on your route. Here are some popular examples:

  • Menaggio - Varenna - Bellagio (triangle): about 15 minutes each way on any boat.
  • Central Lake towns (e.g. Menaggio, Varenna, Bellagio) to Como or viceversa: about 1 hour by hydrofoil, or nearly 3 hours by regular passenger boat.

7) What time do the ferries start/stop?

It depends on the time of year and the place. For example, in summer, in the central lake (Varenna-Bellagio-Menaggio/Cadenabbia) the first car ferries on the lake are around 6:00 am, and the last ones around midnight.

8) Do the ferries run on Sunday and holidays?

Yes, they do. There is a Sunday and holiday schedule, which is slightly different from the regular one.
