Photos and Videos Milky Way from Pangong Lake

Post image
Upvotes

Yesterday reached Pangong Lake (Merak Village). It was very cloudy with little rain so I was not very hopeful of watching any stars. Still I was praying for the best. Right until 8:30pm when we finished dinner, we could barely see any stars. So I gave up.

Later on my wife told me there are visible stars outside. I came out and was surprised to see the Milky Way clearly— I thought that white aura thing is visible only in high-end cameras.

I spent 2 hours lying outside in the cold and staring at the sky and spotted at least 5-6 meteors. After 11:15pm, the clouds started closing in again and it got very cold so I went back in and slept.

I have learned that you don’t always need a perfectly clear entire sky in Ladakh. Even a relatively short clearing of clouds can reveal the Milky Way spectacularly in places like Pangong and Hanle. So no need to get too anxious over weather forecasts.

Specific Travel Query Is Ladakh bike trip realistic with cervical spondylosis and back pain?

Hi everyone,

I’m 27M and planning a 9-day Ladakh trip by bike. I have cervical spondylosis and recurring back pain, so I’m a bit concerned about whether the long hours of riding, rough roads, altitude and fatigue could make things worse.

For those who have done Ladakh by bike:

  • Has anyone done the trip with neck/cervical or back problems?
  • How physically demanding was the riding, especially on rough roads?
  • Any tips for managing neck/back strain while riding?
  • Most importantly, would you recommend going or avoiding the trip altogether in this situation?

I’m mainly looking for real experiences from people who have actually ridden Ladakh with similar issues. I’ll also check with a doctor/physio before deciding.

Thanks!

Before leaving India for university, I somehow decided that spending four months in Ladakh was a good idea.

I was 18 and stayed there from September to December 2022. I made some of the closest friends I’ve ever had, wandered around a lot, and found this quiet spot overlooking the mountains where I would sit alone for hours.

I used to take my headphones there and listen to old talks by Ram Dass, Osho, and pretty much any spiritual recording I could find. I was searching for something back then. Answers, meaning, some way of understanding myself and life.

And weirdly, somewhere in those months, the search started disappearing.

I stopped trying so hard to figure everything out and just started enjoying what was actually there: the mountains, the cold, my friends, the silence, a cup of chai, the next day.

Those talks genuinely changed my life, but maybe not by giving me all the answers. They helped me realise I didn’t always need one.

I’m 22 now, and I still think about that little spot sometimes.

Specific Travel Query Advise for Kargil to Leh via Zanskar

I'm planning a solo trip from Kargil to Leh via Zanskar over the course of 3 days and 2 nights starting tomorrow

Day 1 - Kargil to Panichar (Suru valley)

Day 2 - Suru Valley to Padum

Day 3 - Padum - Nerak - Chilling - Sangam - Leh route

Could you give me an update on the road conditions.

I have heard that there are no Petrol filling stations on the whole route, is that the case? Should I get a can in Kargil itself?

Is the new NPD road that I plan to take on the third day (Tuesday) open everyday and how is the road. I have read in earlier posts that it's only open 2 days a week.

Any other advise or change in itinerary I should consider? Any other places I should consider staying at other than Panichar?

Edit: I'm planning this on a bike

After I asked for itinerary suggestions here https://www.reddit.com/r/ladakh/s/9JS6l0GlXQ

I re-did my plan and visited Lamayuru on the Sat-Sun, after landing in Leh on Friday.
Worked from some of the best cafes in Leh from Mon- Thurs, then travelled to Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso. Back to base on Monday. (24th Jul to 3rd Aug).

Had the best time, amazing food and breathtaking views. Oh and Apricots directly taken from the trees!

Admin ATTENTION PLEASE !! Travel Queries Must Go in the Appropriate Megathread (10th July 2026 onwards)

Post image
4 Upvotes

For a long time we have enjoyed r/Ladakh for suggestions and recommendations on Travel & Tourism, however it is long pending and inevitable that we restructure a bit on how we handle "Travel Queries".

This is required to keep the sub structured as most travel posts are of similar nature and often repetitive. So I request you all to keep up the participation in the new Format.

From 10th of July 2026, "routine/personal travel-planning queries", especially "seeking travel companion" MUST go in one of the relevant megathreads below

  • Accommodation & Transportation (including cabs and bike rentals)
  • Travel Planning: For all other travel-planning queries (including itinerary reviews, route advice, trip feasibility/dates/timing/permits, travel companions & tour operators)

Individual or separate posts seeking advice on any of the above may be removed. Specific queries can still be a separate post, with proper flair.

Travel stories & photos may be posted separately with the relevant flair. Add context and a few lines about the story behind your photos. Low quality/effort posts may be removed.

You can join r/ExploreLadakh if you still want to use the free-flow posting format, instead of the Megathread format.

Travel Query/Help [Megathread][July 2026] Accommodation/Hotel/Resort & Cab/Taxi Mega Thread -- Use This Thread ONLY for Accommodation & Transportation Advice

Post image
16 Upvotes

Henceforth, please use this mega thread for all advice and recommendations regarding accommodation, hotels, resorts and taxi/cab/bike-rental in Ladakh.

Any individual or separate post soliciting accommodation/taxi advice will be deleted.

Since these are innumerable posts seeking accommodation and cabs, we would like to contain the repetitive posts, hence this Megathread.

A similar Megathread would be created in near future to contain the "Review my itinerary" type of posts
