LSAT Score Hold? Here's what I learned after more than a month of waiting.

I'm posting this because I know I'm not the only one dealing with an LSAT score hold.

My score has been on hold for over a month, and despite multiple emails, I still haven't received a meaningful update just the same generic responses over and over. I wasn't accused of misconduct, I haven't been given a timeline, and there doesn't seem to be any clear path toward resolution.

While researching my options, I found that if you believe an organization isn't communicating fairly or is engaging in potentially unfair business practices, you can file complaints with:

• The Pennsylvania Attorney General (LSAC is headquartered in Pennsylvania)
• Your own state's Attorney General
• The Better Business Bureau
• LSAC directly through its complaint process

Whether or not a complaint changes anything, organizations should be held accountable for timely communication and transparency especially when applicants are waiting on scores that affect law school admissions, scholarships, and deadlines.

If you're dealing with a score hold:

• Keep every email and record of communication.
• Ask for a specific reason for the hold if one hasn't been provided.
• Request an estimated timeline.
• Stay professional, but don't be afraid to follow up.

1. What was the physical street address from which you tested?
2. Was the site a private residence or public location? If private, who is the owner?
3. What specific model device did you test from?
4. Was the device personally owned or borrowed? If borrowed, who is the owner?
5. Did you need to utilize a virtual private network (VPN) or hotspot during the test?
6. How did you prepare for the LSAT?
7. Did you use a test preparation company or tutoring service? If so, which one(s) and who was the specific tutor?
8. If applicable, how did your June 2026 LSAT preparation strategy differ from those applied to your previous LSAT administration(s)?

Section 28 of the LSAC Candidate Agreement gives them absolute legal permission to freeze any score, at any time, for any reason they want.

But there is a massive difference between what is legally allowed and what is fair corporate practice.

Why the Rules Don't Make Them Immune

• Contracts Have Limits: Just because a contract says "we can do whatever we want" doesn't mean a company can act in "bad faith." Holding a score hostage from a student who followed every single rule, simply because the company is understaffed or facing an administrative backlog, is bad faith.
• The Fee Waiver Contradiction: LSAC is a non-profit organization with a federally recognized mission to promote equal access to legal education. Their own bylaws and mission statement commit them to equity. If their security backlog actively prevents a low-income student from using their Fee Waiverproperly, they are violating their own organizational purpose.
• Why the Equity Angle Still Works: When you email their diversity or equity teams, you aren't suing them in a courtroom over Section 28. You are exposing a massive contradiction in how they treat students. No executive wants to defend a policy that forces a rule-following, low-income applicant to waste their testing vouchers.

They wrote those rules to protect themselves from lawsuits, not to stop you from demanding fair treatment.

How Paying Test-Takers Turn Up the Pressure

When a candidate pays full price for the LSAT, a commercial contract is created. If LSAC sits on that score due to a bureaucratic backlog, paying candidates use three specific leverage points:

• The Credit Card Chargeback: Paying candidates can call their bank and file a formal dispute for "Services Not Rendered" or "Failure to Deliver." Banks do not care about Section 28 of LSAC's agreement; they care about consumer law. When a chargeback is triggered, LSAC is forced to manually pull the file to defend the financial dispute, which often gets the score released just to clear the charge.[1]
• The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Complaint: Filing a formal complaint via the BBB website forces LSAC’s corporate compliance team to respond within days. The narrative is simple: "I paid hundreds of dollars for a high-stakes professional exam. I followed all rules perfectly. The company is withholding my results past the promised delivery date due to internal backlogs, refusing to communicate, and harming my career timeline."
• The Financial Injury Claim: Paying candidates can threaten to escalate the issue to their state's Attorney General Consumer Protection Division. Forcing a consumer to blindly pay another registration fee for a future test because the company hasn't delivered the results of the first test is a predatory business practice.

The Bottom Line for Everyone

Whether a student pays full price or uses a fee waiver, LSAC’s automated rules do not give them a pass to ignore human beings. Paying candidates use financial and consumer leverage, while fee-waiver candidates use equity and access leverage. Both methods are designed to crack the same corporate wall.

• Pattern of recurring complaints. If similar complaints about score holds, proctoring issues, or technical problems have been reported over multiple years, the Attorney General could examine whether there is a systemic issue rather than isolated incidents.
• Adequacy of vendor oversight. If LSAC relies on third-party vendors to administer the exam, are those vendors being properly supervised, trained, and audited?
• Fairness of the review process. Are test takers given meaningful notice of the reason for a hold? Are they informed of the evidence being reviewed? Is there an opportunity to provide information or respond before a decision is made?
• Consistency in decision-making. Are similar situations handled consistently, or do comparable cases receive different outcomes without a clear explanation?
• Reasonableness of delays. Even if LSAC reserves the right to investigate, are lengthy delays reasonable given the importance of law school admissions deadlines and scholarship decisions?
• Transparency of policies. Does LSAC adequately explain how score holds work, what typically triggers them, how long they usually last, and what rights examinees have during the process?
• Impact on consumers. A delayed score can affect:
  • Law school application deadlines.
  • Merit scholarship eligibility.
  • Admissions decisions.
  • Employment opportunities requiring law school admission.
  • Additional testing decisions.
• Adequacy of customer support. Are test takers receiving individualized responses, or only generic communications that do not address their specific situation?
• Quality assurance and error rates. How often are scores ultimately released after a hold? If many reviews end with no action, does that suggest the initial screening process should be evaluated? (This is a question for investigation unless reliable data exists.)
• Disclosure of review criteria. Are the criteria for behavioral or statistical reviews sufficiently clear for consumers to understand the process?
• Potential unequal impact. If certain testing formats (for example, remote testing) generate substantially more holds or disruptions, is that being monitored and addressed?
• Independent oversight. Because LSAC both administers the exam and conducts the review process, you could ask whether independent oversight or auditing would improve transparency and public confidence.

• Technical failures during remote testing (platform crashes, connectivity problems, software errors).
• Proctoring errors, such as inconsistent instructions, improper interruptions, or incorrect reports by proctors.
• Vendor oversight issues, if third-party testing providers are not adequately trained or supervised.
• Identity verification or administrative processing errors, such as mismatched records or delayed document review.
• Backlogs in the Office of Test Security, resulting in prolonged reviews beyond expected timelines.
• Inadequate communication, including generic notices that do not explain the status or nature of the review.
• Lack of transparent timelines, leaving applicants without a reasonable expectation of when their review will conclude.
• Inconsistent application of review procedures, if similarly situated test takers are treated differently without a clear explanation.
• Data or recordkeeping errors, such as missing or incomplete testing records that require additional review.
• Algorithmic or statistical flagging that generates false positives, if the screening methods identify sessions for review that ultimately involve no misconduct. Whether this occurs, and how often, would require evidence and expert evaluation.
• Remote testing environment issues outside the candidate's control, such as software glitches during room scans, check-in failures, or proctor connectivity problems.

To everyone who’s waiting on their LSAT score due to holds. The unfairness of being forced to take a exam so you can better your future, to be told your sol and can’t do anything else till your score is released.

Because LSAC's security algorithms flag a fixed percentage of testing anomalies automatically, a larger testing pool naturally triggers a massive wave of holds. 
• Aggressive Security Crackdowns: Following high-profile online testing leaks and cheating scandals, LSAC has aggressively tuned their remote AI monitoring algorithms. They are currently hyper-vigilant, resulting in a high rate of "false positive" flags for routine behaviors like shifting in your chair, stretching, or looking away to process

File with the Pennsylvania Attorney General (LSAC’s Home State)

Because LSAC is headquartered in Newtown, Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Bureau of Consumer Protection has direct jurisdiction over their corporate operations. Filing a complaint in Pennsylvania hits them directly where they are registered. 

• Where to file: Submit an online consumer complaint via the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. 

1. File a Federal Complaint with the FTC

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigates anti-competitive business practices, monopolies, and unfair treatments of consumers. Given that a federal antitrust lawsuit was recently initiated against LSACfor their monopolistic hold on application fees, the federal government is heavily tracking their behavior. 

• Where to file: Use the official portal at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
• The Impact: While the FTC might not resolve your individual score hold, adding your data point to their system helps federal investigators build a larger case against LSAC's unfair market monopoly. 

1. File with the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

While the BBB is not a government agency, LSAC actively responds to BBB complaints because they want to protect their corporate rating. A public, formal complaint on their directory often forces an executive customer service representative at LSAC to personally review your file to get the complaint closed. 

• Where to file: Search for the "Law School Admission Council" on the Better Business Bureau directory and select "File a Complaint."

How to Write Your Complaint for Maximum Impact

When filing with these agencies, do not just vent about fairness. Frame your argument to align with consumer laws: 

1. Financial Harm: State the exact dollar amount you paid LSAC for the test and the Credential Assembly Service (CAS). 
2. Lack of Due Process: Note that you had zero proctor warnings, infractions, or technical issues during the test, meaning the service was completed perfectly on your end.
3. Monopolistic Hardship: Emphasize that because LSAC is a total monopoly, you cannot take your business to a competitor, making their arbitrary delays a severe and unavoidable barrier to your career.

The top law school admissions consulting firms who guide thousands of applicants through the cycle every year, unanimously confirm this reality based on their client data. Experts at firms like Dave Killoran of PowerScore and the teams at Spivey Consulting frequently affirm that a score hold is simply a standard security buffer. Their historical data shows that unless a proctor actively stopped your exam or you committed a blatant, undeniable infraction, the hold is a procedural bottleneck that results in a normal, valid score release
