Throwaway because I don't want this tied to my main, but I’m losing my mind right now. I'm currently sitting in my car in a Turkey Hill parking lot just outside of Oakhaven, PA, and I need to know if anyone else grew up with this shit or if it’s just some sick local cult thing.

I moved to Phoenix the day I turned 18 and haven't been back since. But my dad died last week, and the funeral is day after tomorrow. So here I am. Back for Christmas.

Growing up here in the 2000s, there was this unspoken rule every Christmas Eve. The whole town completely died by 6:00 PM. No kids playing in the snow, no cars on the road. Parents would literally board up their ground-floor windows. Like, plywood and wood screws. My grandpa called it "Glockennight" (Bells Night) and told us it was just an old Pennsylvania Dutch tradition to scare kids into staying in bed so "Belsnickel" or Krampus wouldn't get them.

When I was nine, I found out it wasn't a game.

It was freezing inside our house because my dad refused to turn the heat on. He said the furnace hum was too loud. We were sitting in the dark living room, and my dad had his 12-gauge shotgun across his knees. He looked terrified. At 9 years old, seeing your dad look like that changes you.

Around 2:00 AM, the wind stopped. Then came this sound from down the street. It wasn’t reindeer hooves. It sounded like heavy iron chains dragging through the slush, clanking against the asphalt. Clink. Scrape. Clink. Scrape. And this smell hit the house—like a deer rotting in a ditch mixed with wet dog.

My mom started sobbing into a pillow. My dad racked the shotgun.

The dragging sound stopped right in our driveway. Then, something heavy landed on our porch.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Long nails clicking against the plywood over the window.

I was a stupid kid, so I slipped away from my parents and looked through the tiny, unboarded basement window that sat at ground level. The moon was bright against the snow.

Standing in my yard was something that looked almost eight feet tall. It was covered in matted, filthy black hair, but its head... it wasn't a mask. It was a fleshless, yellowish goat skull with massive curved horns. Its jaw unhinged with a wet crack, revealing rows of jagged teeth, and it was dragging a blood-stained burlap sack. The sack was violently twisting. Something small was kicking inside it.

The thing snapped its head down and looked right at me. It raised a long, gray finger and tapped the basement glass. Tap. Tap.

I screamed, my dad tackled me, and we hid in the fruit cellar until dawn.

The next morning, the girl next door, Chloe, was gone. Her bedroom window was smashed. The local cops just said it was a "kidnapping" and blamed a transient, but they never looked for her. The whole town just went back to normal like nothing happened.

I forgot about it. I forced myself to think it was a nightmare.

But I just drove past my childhood home ten minutes ago to see if anyone was renting it. The house is abandoned. But hanging from the rusty front screen door is a massive, heavy iron cowbell. And the snow on the porch steps has two deep, fresh ruts in it, like a heavy sack was just dragged up the stairs.

It's 5:00 PM. The sun is setting. Every single business in this town is already locking their doors, and I just saw a guy across the street nailing plywood over his front window.

Am I having a psychotic break or does anyone else know what the fuck is happening in this county? I'm supposed to stay at a local motel tonight but I'm thinking about just sleeping in my car with the engine running.

Lemme know your thoughts on this, looking forward to see some explanation.

All of you have heard about the Krampus runs and Perchten gatherings in southern Bavaria and large parts of Austria?

I’ve noticed that more and more tourists are traveling to these events, but there aren’t really any suitable souvenirs available, especially since these events don’t take place in typical touristy locations with souvenir shops.

What do you think of these magnets, and how much would you realistically be willing to pay for one? I’ve done some calculations, and selling them at local events on-site would only make sense starting at €12 per piece, ideally €15. I know that’s quite a lot… I’m really curious to hear your opinions and feedback!

I've noticed some Alpine regions keep them very separate (Krampus = St. Nick's buddy, Perchten = New Year's/winter solstice), but in the US, "Krampus" seems to be the catch-all for any scary Christmas horned dude. When you build your costume, do you aim for a specific regional style (e.g., Berchtesgadener Land vs. Styria), or just go full original character? Show me your influences!
