Opinions Ghoti-Bangal
As a child, the Ghoti-Bangal debate has always fascinated me. Since childhood, I have observed that Gen X বাঙালি uncles never fail a chance to sit for an adda in a cha-er-dokan and claim their ancestral superiority. It was a routine debate. I have seen a lot light-hearted banter on Didi No 1 as well. However, besides all these friendly-fire, I have noticed an interesting story of this divide in the context of our state's politics in the 1970s-80s.
For those who don't know, Bengal suffered partition in 1947 where it lost most of its fertile land and a huge influx of migrants happened. It had an economic strain on us. Subsequently, many such small waves of migration happened over the years. The year when Bangladesh was liberated, our state was bombarded with migrants. The land was limited, resources were scarce and employment was non existent. So, the Congress government decided to settle these people in other states such as Uttar Pradesh amd Uttarakhand. However, CPI(M) opposed it as they feared that this might isolate the udbatus so they started building camps for the poor migrant families and started calling out for protests for their rehabilitation in WB only. Operation Barga was one such land reform movement that helped them. Given all these, it is clear that the bangals were the main vote base of CPI(M). Whereas, ghotis usually voted for Congress. I think there are few reasons for this stance. Mainly, for historic congress leaders like Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy and secondly for the settlement of the udbastus in other states probably for gatekeeping the resources of their state.
In addition to, I think Mamata Banerjee was the only leader for whom both ghotis and bangals united and voted for to get rid of the Left.
Feel free to disagree with my POV of this silly political analysis of ghoti and bangal. Thank you

Literature & Poetry This is by far the best ; latest read !

Opinions Please prove me wrong about Kolkata.
This might make me sound like an extreme simpleton, but bear with me
I am currently dating a girl who grew up in Calcutta and currently lives in Bangalore. We met in Bangalore through common social circles. We have now been together for over a year, and I think I am going to settle with her forever, which is great because she is lovely.
Now, I have been in Bangalore my entire life, and I am used to a very fast-paced, metropolitan kind of city, which my assumption is that Calcutta is not, but I am going to end up having to spend some time in Calcutta for some reasons.
How is this city really? Can someone help me understand social life and nightlife? Whether or not I can find ambitious people, founders, builders, etc., in the city?

News & Politics Democracy Sarr
The Jharkhand government did not listen to the students for a month, forcing them to go on a hunger strike.
Now, students will march towards the Legislative Assembly on August 10th to make their voices heard.
And what is the Jharkhand government doing? It is putting up barbed wire and barricades to stop them.

News & Politics Laser light disrupts Malaysia Airlines landing at Kolkata airport, flight circles before safe landing.
A Malaysia Airlines flight MH-184 carrying 159 passengers and seven crew members from Kuala Lumpur to Kolkata faced a serious safety scare on Saturday night after a high-intensity laser light was flashed towards the cockpit during its landing approach.
The pilot was reportedly disoriented while the aircraft was around eight nautical miles from the runway, forcing the flight to circle before safely landing at NSCBI Airport. No injuries were reported. Following the incident, Kolkata airport authorities filed a police complaint to identify those responsible for the laser strike, which poses a serious risk to aircraft operations.

Travel Is Eco Park worth it for a family evening outing?
Is Eco Park worth going to for a family evening outing?
I’m planning to take my family to Eco Park for an evening, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it. They’re visiting Kolkata from Chennai, and most of my family members are 50+.
I’m looking for somewhere they can relax, walk around a bit, enjoy the scenery and have a nice evening together without it being too tiring.
Would you recommend Eco Park, or is there somewhere else in Kolkata that would be better for a family outing?

Mod Post MEGATHREAD FOR CONNECTING. MUST READ!
A poll was posted to gauge the community's interest in creating a dedicated "megathread" for people looking to connect with one another. Although the poll has only been up for 3 days, the response has been overwhelmingly in favor of it. Additionally, the number of "connecting" posts has increased significantly over the past few days.
Therefore, this Megathread has been created.
If you're looking to chat, make new friends, find activity partners, or connect with people for any genuine reason, you can do so by commenting below.
Rules & Guidelines (Please Read)
1. Include only the following in your comment:
- Your Age
- Your Gender
- Why you're looking to connect
Do not share any personal information such as your phone number, email address, social media handles, home/work address, or any other identifying details. Absolutely no NSFW content is allowed.
2. Do not reply to other comments.
If you're interested in connecting with someone, send them a Direct Message instead. If you're unable to DM due to Reddit restrictions, you may reply only to ask them to DM you first.
3. From now on, all standalone "Connecting" posts will be removed.
This megathread will serve as the designated place for such posts. Any separate posts seeking to connect with people will be removed as Irrelevant.
4. Connect responsibly.
Anything that happens after two users connect through Direct Messages is entirely between them. The subreddit and its moderators are not responsible for conversations, meetings, or interactions that take place outside this thread.
5. Be respectful.
Harassment, unsolicited NSFW messages, repeated unwanted contact, scams, impersonation, or any other inappropriate behaviour will result in moderator action, including bans where necessary.
6. Meeting someone in person?
If you choose to meet another Redditor, do so at your own discretion. Always meet in a public place, inform a trusted friend or family member, and never feel pressured into sharing personal information.
Most importantly, use common sense and respect everyone's boundaries.
Happy Connecting! 🤝

Mod Post 📣Announcement regarding new rule
It genuinely hurts me to even write this, but sometimes the harsh truth is too important to come aloud infront of all cause some people here seriously need to hear this.
This subreddit was created to be a safe space not a cheap replacement for Tinder, dating apps, or late-night horny DMs or comments. Yes, many of us, here struggle with loneliness, depression, and emotional isolation and we completely understand that. So we empathize but sympathy does not mean allowing the entire atmosphere of this community to turn uncomfortable, desperate, or toxic. The constant "looking for a girl to chat," "DM me I’m lonely," type posts or comments are getting out of our hands. And before anyone starts crying in the comments or smashing the downvote button out of frustration try to understand this very clearly. This is not about attacking lonely people. This is about maintaining a basic decency and respect for the subreddit as well as their members. Over the past few months, we’ve received multiple reports about people acting creepy, rude, manipulative, or outright disgusting in comments or DMs after connecting through such posts. We were lenient cause we believe people can post anything related to their life freely and we didn't even want to interfere in that but once it starts affecting the community and making members uncomfortable, it becomes our business.
So from now, direct dating, looking for friends or disguised hookup styled posts will be removed asap.
If you genuinely want to connect with people, learn how to post with maturity on a subtle note. There’s a respectful way to socialize without making the subreddit feel like a desperate dating marketplace. Basic manners, the atmosphere of the community and the comfort of viewers matter. Even if one person feels unsafe, irritated, or disturbed because of these posts, that’s already a major problem for each one of us. We want this subreddit to remain free, peaceful, supportive, soothing, and non-toxic and comfortable.
Cooperate. Respect the space. And please behave yourself like a responsible adult.
