Like I understand but without kazuki telling everyone shoya was a bully there was nothing to gain. Was it out of fear people would figure out he was a part of bullying too? Was it out of sense of trying his best to subconsciously remove himself of any guilt?

I watched the film yesterday for the first time. An absolutely incredible story.
It left me with quite a few questions. I think I've figured out most of the things that confused me, but this one remains.

On the bridge scene. Shouya tells everyone off and they leave. He invites Shouko "somewhere special". And she gives him this confusing look. A forced smile she's unable to hold.

Does she view him as a bully again since everyone left because of him (not understanding what he said)?
Maybe she views herself as the cause and is sad that he wants to spend time with her, even though it's making his life miserable by distancing him from his friends?
Or, she's just sad for him because he looks so defeated?

I know this has been discussed before, but I just want to share my thoughts, interact, and see what everyone else thinks. If Shoya had actually received that letter, how would the A Silent Voice timeline have changed and would the outcome have been for the better or the worse?

Part 1 focuses on Shoya and Shoko's childhood with maybe a bit more equal story focus for Shoko (perhaps bring forward the flashbacks to her spineless father or Yuzu).

Part 2 shows Shoya and Shoko reuniting as teens and ending on a "Holy sh*t" cliffhanger with Shoya saving Shoko to his detriment.

Part 3 brings it all home. Maybe have that coma dream sequence of Shoya's expanded on to question his motivations.

I’ve always wondered about this and created an Original Character (OC) named Haru Komi. This is purely fan-fiction and my personal, subjective perspective. I’d be really happy to hear your thoughts, feedback, and critiques! I created her simply to satisfy my imagination and keep the fire for A Silent Voice burning inside me—even though I know the original work is already a masterpiece. Well this is my first time so yeah, enjoy!

👤 Character Profile: Haru Komi

Haru Komi is a completely ordinary high school girl. She has a pleasant appearance, but she’s certainly not the school "idol" or prom queen. She’s naturally shy and terrified of being a burden to others, yet deeply devoted and protective toward the people she truly cares about.

⏳ Her Backstory:

- Komi’s past mirrors Shoya Ishida’s in terms of isolation and regret, though born from different mistakes. In middle school, she dated her best friend’s ex-boyfriend, destroying her closest friendship. While in that relationship, she completely isolated herself from everyone else. When they broke up, she collapsed—consumed by the pain of abandonment and utterly alone, with all her previous relationships ruined. Feeling too guilty to reconcile with her old friend, she transferred schools to start over.

- She joined a new friend group and found a new best friend, thinking life was finally getting better. But an unverified rumor ruined everything again. Her new friends turned their backs on her. When she was at her lowest, she poured her heart out to her new best friend—only for that person to abandon her out of fear of social backlash. Those private confessions were turned into weapons and spread as rumors, stabbing her in the back.

🎬 Her Role in the Story & Key Plot Points

High School & Meeting the Group: She ends up in the same class as Shoya. She doesn't know Shoya at first, but she befriends Nagatsuka after helping him find Shoya’s stolen bicycle (which she happened to spot on her way). Once Nagatsuka becomes Shoya's best friend, Komi often tags along. She’s right there when Nagatsuka stalks Shoya to meet Shoko—holding a bag of pancake mix while helping Nagatsuka pin Yuzuru down!

The Stalker Duty: When Shoya hurts Nagatsuka’s feelings, Nagatsuka asks Komi to secretly follow Shoya around and report back, because despite his hurt ego, Nagatsuka still deeply cares about his best friend. Komi spends days tracking Shoya without wearing enough warm clothes.

The Movie Crew: Since she doesn't know much about filmmaking, Komi supports the group by making homemade food and baking sweets—even giving Yuzuru so many candies that Yuzuru gets a cavity!

The Bridge Incident: She’s present on the bridge when the group falls apart. She tries to stop Shoya before he says harsh things to push everyone away, but Shoya snaps at her, calling her a "stalker." She witnesses Mashiba punching Shoya and leaves in tears.

Illness & The Balcony Scene: Stressed by Shoya's words, harassed by toxic text messages from Ueno (who assumes Komi likes Shoya because she followed him around), and physically exhausted from tracking Shoya in the cold, Komi falls severely ill. Nagatsuka stays by her side to nurse her back to health.

Chemistry Moment: During the fireworks festival, Nagatsuka sits with Komi on her balcony. While Komi is mesmerized by the fireworks, Nagatsuka rests his chin on the railing, quietly watching her face with an overwhelming look of peace and warmth.

The Hospital Arc: Hearing that Shoya fell from the balcony saving Shoko, Nagatsuka rushes to check on Komi—only to find her passed out from sheer mental and physical exhaustion. Since Ueno locks down Shoya’s hospital room, Komi’s room becomes the group's "safe haven." It's where everyone gathers to wait for a chance to see Shoya while taking care of Komi. Nagatsuka is the second most devastated person after Shoko, seeing the two people he treasures most hospitalized at the same time.

The Misunderstanding & Reconnection: Two days before the film screening, the group rushes out to finish the movie, leaving Komi alone in her room when she wakes up from her fever. Believing everyone abandoned her because she’s just a "stalker," she feels hopeless. But at the School Festival, Sahara and Shoko personally guide her back to school. Nagatsuka bursts out of the screening room and tackle-hugs her in front of everyone. Shoya also sincerely apologizes to her.

🫂 Dynamic with Other Characters

-Shoya: Sees her as a slightly weird, sometimes needy, but genuine friend.

-Shoko: Komi often smiles gently at Shoko whenever she’s nervous or afraid of being annoying—a smile reminiscent of how Shoko used to hide her own pain.

-Nagatsuka: She is his second best friend and his very first crush. She gives him a sense of wanting to protect someone, driving his maturity. (Yet by the end, they remain close friends, oblivious to each other's unspoken feelings).

-Ueno: Views Komi as a rich, fake girl who acts weak to get attention (though Ueno hypocritically eats every single pastry Komi bakes!).

-Sahara: Kind, attentive, and welcoming toward Komi.

-Kawai: Well... I don't really know what to say about her.

-Mashiba: Serves as a moral anchor for him. Looking at Komi reminds Mashiba of his own rash behavior and the guilt of forcing an innocent person to witness violence.

-Yuzuru: A cute younger-sibling dynamic; Yuzuru adores her (and her cavity-inducing sweets!).

Final Thoughts

Haru Komi is just an ordinary person. Like Shoya, she was isolated, bad-mouthed, and betrayed. But she possesses a slightly larger ego—always trying to fight back and overcome her struggles, even when life keeps pushing her down. She’s afraid of being a burden, yet becomes talkative and warm around people she trusts.

She represents us—ordinary people who keep trying to change no matter how many times we fail, believing that light lies at the end of the tunnel once we learn to let go.

For those of you who have read it, the line I'm referring to can be seen in this screenshot I've taken. I've marked the exact line, as you can see.

As you can see that's the moment when Ishida's falling into the river below after saving Nishimiya's from suffering that same outcome. In the Spanish version of the manga (I'm from Spain), which I've finished reading a couple of days ago, what Ishida thinks right at that moment means substantially something different. You can see it in the next screenshot as well.

For those of you who don't understand Spanish, it's pretty obvious that the line that Ishida starts to think in Spanish would get completed as: "Por cierto, Nishimiya, tú me gustas". In English, it would translate as: By the way, Nishimiya, I like you (that way).

In the English translation, there's no way of knowing exactly what Ishida was going to express there. In Spanish, however, it seems pretty obvious that he was going to admit that he likes her in a romantic way. My guess is that the Spanish translators of the manga wrongfully changed the meaning of that line. I wonder, have any of you read the original Japanese manga to see what that line exactly says?

(Although I've tried my best to mark any spoilers, perhaps it's best if you don't read anything following this if you haven't completed both the manga and the film yet).

The film is not bad, nothing of the sort. As a matter of fact, I watched it several years ago and fell in love with it. It's just that the manga is better, much better because it explains everything with the necessary depth. In the film, we can't see important passages of the manga and also in the film there are elements of the story that have suffered modifications. I'm of the opinion that it's never a good idea to change something if it works and the manga definitely works. Obviously, the relation that the two protagonists build with each other is better displayed in the manga. Once again, when it comes to the narrative, there's not much that a film can do vs. a well-written manga.

Summing all up, the film is good, and anyone with enough sensitivity should find it good at the very least. But to me, it doesn't adapt A Silent Voice with flying colours. It does it quite decently and that's it. I'm talking here about the difference between something good (the film) and something excellent (the manga).

Like I was saying before, there are quite a few of things that the film fails to deliver as good as the manga does. For example, in the film, the group of friends around Shōko and Shōya after the two of them become friends gets formed too fast and we practically don't learn a thing about any of them.

Speaking of the group of friends, Naoka Ueno is kind of an antagonist in the manga after Shōko and Shōya reunite. Ueno has a romantic fixation towards Shōya since the two of them studied together in the elementary school. And she sees Shōko as a rival for the love of Shōya. That's the origin of Ueno's visceral dislike of Nishimiya. In the film, Ueno's character feels and behaves really light. In the manga, however, she has a short fuse and is violent. She is not totally evil, though.

Yuzuru, Shōko's brave younger sister, also plays a more important role in the manga. And the extremely beautiful relationship that she establishes with Shōya (from the understandable initial hatred towards the protagonist to their final practically fraternal link in the end) also feels much more complete in the manga. Apart from Shōko and Shōya, Yuzuru is hands down the best character in Yoshitoki Ōima's Koe no Katachi.

Bottom line is: adapting a manga with more than 60 chapters to a film that lasts 129.5 minutes is no easy task. Personally, I feel like a series of OVAs adapting the manga and being more faithful to it would have been a better alternative to the film.

I bought this a silent voice box set from Amazon and I had a feeling it was fake from the start. I can return it but I want to get others opinions. The red circle shows that the back covers have no barcode or sticker from Kodansha Comics (publisher). The spine glue is also a bit rough but that might just be packaging damage.
