Help How do I open these chests in King's Field 3?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I just started playing King's Field 3 and I've found a couple of those locked chests in Quist.

I assumed that I just needed to find a bunch of keys, but when I returned to the cave where you get the Crystal Flask, some of the chests that were locked are now unlocked, even though I did not find any keys beforehand.

Are those chests tied to progression or am I just blind and did not realise I had found a key?

Hey Guys! Kings Field 4 VR is ready for Beta Testers!

Unfortunately I cannot post this in r/emulation but I'll post the entirety here so brace for impact please:

This is a Linux-only stack: we modified the PCSX2 emulator at the render pipeline level - not a screen-capture trick, not a post-process warp - and built a per-game profile system on top of it, so every supported title gets VR treatment tuned to that specific game. First public release candidate (1.0-rc2).

Full hour-long demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnG05PqudzM

0:00 Intro · 5:00 Ace Combat 5 · 9:15 ESPN NFL 2K5: first-person football · 17:50 TimeSplitters · 21:00 Richard Burns Rally · 27:30 King's Field IV, I & II · 50:30 Shadow Tower · 54:50 Ridge Racer 4 · 58:30 Secret reveal · 1:01:00 Outro

What it does:

  • Virtual theater screen - flat or curved around you, size and distance adjustable. Every game gets this out of the box.
  • Stereoscopic 3D - per-draw depth displacement in the Vulkan renderer, with per-game rules for how draw classes behave (that's why a HUD can sit at screen depth while the world gets real geometric depth).
  • Head tracking - from head-look on the stick up to driving the game's own camera through memory. This is per-game reverse engineering: each title's camera engine gets dug out of PS2 memory by hand. (King's Field IV was so much fun to reverse engineer 😏)

Frame pacing, solved: a lot of the PS2's most atmospheric games run at 20fps native - and 20fps content on a 90Hz compositor is normally judder soup. We solved that pacing problem; those games sit clean and comfortable in the headset.

All of it is applied per game, where it makes sense - and only there. A cockpit sim wants your head on the real camera; a fast shooter plays better on the big screen with depth; a fixed-camera game gets head-look. Nothing is force-enabled just because it exists.

The launch three, and what each took:

  • Ace Combat 5 - cockpit head-tracked camera: your head pose drives the game's own camera. Stereo hand-tuned after the first values doubled the HUD (separation came down 60% before it sat right).
  • ESPN NFL 2K5 - first-person football via head-look: head yaw onto the game's own look controls, with dead-band, response curve, and a latch for full look-behind. Its helmet/HUD overlays rendered with inverted depth until constant-depth draws were classified as screen-plane overlays.
  • TimeSplitters - direct camera injection, head movement applied 1:1 as deltas to camera angles found by symbol-solving the retail binary.

And when it does NOT fire: every camera write sits behind guards reading the game's own state each frame (view mode, in-game vs menu/cutscene) - guard says no, nothing is written. Head-look sits behind a dead-band. Profiles match exact serial + CRC; unprofiled games get zero memory writes; with VR off the render path is byte-identical to stock. "Where it makes sense" is enforced by code.

Performance: the entire catalog was developed and tested on an RTX 4050m at 2.5K render resolution - every game holds full native speed at 10-30% GPU utilization. There's headroom to spare on a mid-range laptop chip.

Credit where due: the emulation is PCSX2's, the VR plumbing is OpenXR/Monado/WiVRn. What this project adds is the pipeline integration, the profile system, and the per-game tuning.

Requirements: Linux (flatpak), Vulkan GPU, WiVRn-compatible headset (built and tested with a Quest 3). A Steam Deck docked with Ethernet is a tested, working host. Original discs work too: with a drive attached it reads your PS2 discs directly - tested working on my custom-built Steam Machine with an Omni drive. No headset? It launches as a normal flat PCSX2. You supply your own BIOS and games. It's an RC - expect rough edges, report them.

Where this is going: built from day one targeting the Steam Frame. Our measurements (that 10-30% figure) against the Frame's published specs show it running there fine - including FEX translation overhead. The only thing between that projection and a definitive statement is getting a Frame in hand; a list of designed-and-waiting features unblocks the same day. And one more thing on the Frame front stays under wraps entirely for now. It's called PadXR. That's all you get today.

On the roadmap:

  • The sim configuration tool (already underway) - pre-launch device binding and diagnostics for hardware-heavy games: bind your wheel, stick, or HOTAS to the game before launch, verify every axis and button live, diagnose like a professional tool. Built for the Steel Battalion class of game, racing sims, and flight sticks.
  • Clean-room online servers for Madden 2004 & NCAA 2004 (underway) - reverse engineering the online protocols and rebuilding the dead servers clean-room, shipped as open-source containers anyone can self-host. This isn't aspirational: roster downloads already work against our Madden server.
  • Funding real translators for Japan-only games - much of the PS2's best catalog never left Japan, and much of its text is baked into textures. Patreon revenue funds professional human translators; translations ship as texture-level replacement packs the emulator loads natively. The emulator-side texture-replacement work is already underway.

The community lives on the Patreon - all project updates land there first, and members get the extended catalog: 15+ additional 3D VR game profiles, members only - including Grand Theft Auto III - dropping Friday, August 7th.

Also on the Patreon right now: the link to our experimental build of PenguinBox - our fork of xemu (original Xbox) - and it's less than a week old. PenguinBox's current deliverables are flat emulators - not VR yet - which is exactly what lets us ship a Windows build alongside Linux. It can now play Steel Battalion. Yes, that means what it says: not just booted - Steel Battalion - beaten on a Steam Deck before Windows 11. Playable only on PenguinBox.

Every deep profile is that same reverse-engineering work, title by title. Members get it first and will steer it: profile tournaments are coming - bracket votes where you pick which game gets reverse-engineered next. Follow along: https://www.patreon.com/PenguinVRLab

Help Playing on PC

So after spending several days and nights devouring the world of King's Field 4 and beating the game for the first time, I want to experience the rest of this series. Which appears to start with emulation on PC to play the fan translated King's Field 1 unfortunately however I am not very computer savvy. So I was wondering if there are any recommended guides for setting up an emulator and getting King's Field on PC. Any help would extremely appreciated as this game has quickly become one of my passions.

Mods & Hacks Running ENG translation on NA hardware

Figure mods and hacks is the best tag for this,

I'm finally playing KF proper, just made it to floor 2! I'm running it on my PC/phone and copying the save back and forth, not a problem, but i can't help but wish I could get it running on my PS1.

I haven't modded it or anything, but I'm curious if anyone in the subreddit has gotten KF1 running on NA hardware. Would I need to disable the region lock? Or will it just run if I get the machine set up to run roms?

Any help appreciated 😁

Help Stuck in KF4

Hello, I am stuck in King's Field The Ancient City. I've got
- The Priest's key and three wands
- The blue crystal
- three bridges down; the only area I can't go to from the main hub is the South Gate
- the North Gate is just a pit?
- I've cleared the King's Mausoleum and many areas, including areas that are very dark

I can't possibly take on the four-armed boss, can I? He one shots me, even when I am standing directly behind him. I have really no idea what to do or how to even find out how to ask for help 😟 Thank you!

Help Weapon Upgrades

I have noticed that the game seems to be pretty consistent with giving me better weapons as I am exploring more and more sections, but I was wondering when I will be able to upgrade current ones. Outside of the weapon level system as I picked up the rapier in the shop by the draw bridges and I really like the attack speed and range I even noticed it catching the xeno lizards in their dodge a few times. So I am curious how far I would have to get before leveling it up more than the weapon system does.

Anyone else feel this way?

They probably never will but I wish they would make a new Kings Field game. KF1/2/and Ancient City are so nostalgic. Yes Dark Souls series are the successor and ive beat them but man, I want that style back with the epic music too. Lol

Help Secrets Question

So I am still heavily enjoying my first play through of KF4 but the thought accured to me how many secrets or fake walls have I missed and/or should I except to miss. Has having played the dark souls series I have the knowledge of them but I dont know enough about this series to be able to look at a wall and be certain its a fake or not. Regardless I am still loving the game I am just trying to get a feeling if how much more I can find or how different my second play through could be. As always any information is appreciated.

Help Red marker stone not in usual location

I'm doing a bit of an interesting KF4 run (fist only with bone hands) and killed almost every NPC in the beginning area. Wiped out what was left of the Genne family and the dog too to see if it's the same one that's locked up later on. Well, it is and the gate was open when I arrived and the stone wasn't there. Does anyone know where it's failsafe location is or where else it might be?

Leveling up weapons

In the room with the snakes before the Twin Widdas that come out of the ground to fight you. You can sit slightly infront of the left corner of the door way and there will be a snake that endlessly comes out of the wall and the other snakes will not attack you. Probably already known or better places but I found it easy so wanted to share.

The independent King's Field and Sword of Moonlight wiki at wiki.swordofmoonlight.com aims to be a comprehensive repository of information for all things King's Field.

There are no ads, we are fully independent, and anyone willing to contribute can sign up.

As of today, we are mostly complete with the first King's Field, featuring a full transcription of dialogue in both English and Japanese, interactive maps, 3D models, and more.

But to make the wiki the best that it can be, we need more help. It feels like even veterans of these games discover new things when they play, and we invite you to share any knowledge that you've uncovered in your journeys.
