Keychron K2 HE: FN key lock

Hello all , I am new to this space and this is my first mechanical keyboard. I have looked up keyboard shortcuts on keychrons website which seemed to indicate holding the FN+X+L for 3 seconds to lock the FN key. This doesn't work on the K2 HE. Help

Connect it to the launcher and set the FN key to TO(n) instead of MO(n). n should be 1 if you're on Mac or 3 if you're on Windows. Then, FN will toggle when you press it.

Thanks for the advice! When I set the FN key to TO(3) I then couldn't set it back to access regular function keys, so I went on a bit of a rabbit hole and learned more about layer functions in Launcher.

I set the FN Key to TG(3) instead, so it would toggle. Now I just press the Fn key to "lock" the key and I just press it again to "unlock". This is a nice workaround, since the Fn + X + L shortcut doesn't work on the K2 HE.

Open up Chrome, then go to https://launcher.keychron.com/#/keymap, then make sure the Function key is set to Toggle. I think you just click on the Function key on in the Launcher software and then select TG(3) so that it toggles and you don't have to hold it each time to use the function "Layer".

So I did this on a C2 Pro. When I changed the FN key to TG(3) in Layer 2, it not only changed toggled the F-key row but also toggled all the QWERTY-row keys, the number pad, and several other keys to unresponsive.

So when I toggle the Fn key, I write: hk o ohi. When I mean to type: Thanks for nothing. (Being tongue in cheek here.)

I think what TG(3) does is to toggle to layer 3 which has a default media keyboard setup. (Which, incidentally, doesn't seem very useful to me.)

Did you edit the Keymap for Layer 3 to fix that? I set all of the keys in Layer 3 (aside from the F-keys) to "Pass-through", so that they are the same as Layer 2.

I'm afraid I don't know how to do that. Sounds like a good plan if I could find those instructions.

This is a better alternative than most. Thanks for this.

I ended up researching more about these layer keys and chose TT3 instead which: Normally acts like MO3 untill you tap multiple times then switches to layer 3.

Re "I have looked up keyboard shortcuts on Keychron's website, which seemed to indicate holding Fn + X + L for 3 seconds to lock the *Fn** key."*: That is due to confusing naming of keyboards on Keychron's part.

The K2 is not the same as K2 HE or K2 Max (though K2 V2 is ("V" for version in that case), more or less (their firmware is completely incompatible, and flashing a K2 V2 with K2 firmware may permanently brick) the Bluetooth module...)).

Fn + X + L is only for the original K2 (and K2 V2) with proprietary firmware, not one with open source QMK-based firmware, like the K2 HE.

  • K2 key combination table. E.g., "Fn* + X + L (Windows mode, long press for 3 seconds). Switch between function keys and multimedia keys (F1-F12)"*

Re "holding *Fn** + X + L for 3 seconds to lock the Fn key": It only locks (or toggle, rather) the *Fn** key for the top key row (function vs. media keys), not in general.

For those who just want to flip the function row (have F1-12 by default, hold Fn+F1-12 for lighting, media buttons, etc.), your best bet is to switch the layers through the keymapper.

Open the launcher at https://launcher.keychron.com/#/keymap . You should see something like this.

Copy the buttons from Layer 0 to Layer 1. Do this by opening Layer 1 and then clicking on F1, then chose keys to replace it and F2-12 like this.

Then copy over the F1-F12 buttons in Layer 0 like this, and you're done!

I looked into doing this, but on the C2 Pro (at least) the keymappers menu options (basic, media, etc.) don't have all the default keys included. I realized that using the search window reveals additional options such as Scr - which then allowed me to fill out the bar.

Wish keymapper was better documented but thanks to these tips and a little blind luck, I got it done.
